I would. Sure thing.

I'd say yes, but for one reservation: it's going to cause folks to chip from one the green, and then we're going to get divots on the green because it isn't usually a pro who gets stymied in match play.

I realize most courses have rules prohibiting any club other than a putter from on the green, but I still see folks chipping from on the green.

I would. I would also revert the PGA Championship to match play.

Not a fan of the stymie, doesn't seem very "gentlemanly" IMO

I think if you get two people who dont putt well on a similar line, it could become a defensive battle then. So No.

Exactly...you're adding another element to the game!

I'd be all for it!

I think people spend too much time on the greens as it is. It would make golf slower.

No. Golf is about getting your ball into the hole in the lowest number of shots and via your skill in doing so beating your opponents - whether the contest is stroke or match play. I'm not into gamesmanship of this type.

Absolutely not. There would be too much damage. Many of today's greens are not as furry as they were in the pre-50's era and therefore harder to get under without scuffing the green.

There'd also be more strokes taken on greens resulting in slow play.

Bring it back, it would be fun. And no it isn't really a gamesmanship thing, it's just plain old good/bad luck and it's an interesting element.

Also you wouldn't actually be chipping to get over your opponents ball from close range, in a lot of cases you would actually be hitting down sharply on your ball with your putter and causing it to jump over it. Try it some time it's a lot of fun when you pull it off.

I think it would be fun and competitive at the same time. My friends and I play "stymied" on the putting green before a round, or after a round when we're jus messin around. It's fun and pretty entertaining.

    • I tried this again today. Again, I used the random picker app on my phone and I set the targets into my SC4. I used carry distance not total distance.  I did everything the same except today I decided to print out my actual shot distances for you.  Target Club Actual Difference Score Score vs Par 90 GW 101.4 11.4 Double 2 95 GW 93.9 -1.1 Birdie -1 100 GW 102.4 2.4 Birdie -1 105 GW 100.6 -4.4 Par 0 110 GW 108.2 -1.8 Birdie -1 115 PW 128.3 13.3 Double 2 120 PW 117.8 -2.2 Birdie -1 125 PW 125 0 Eagle -2 130 PW 130.9 0.9 Eagle -2 135 9I 126.7 -8.3 Bogey 1 140 9I 139.2 -0.8 Eagle -2 145 8I 125 -20 Double 2 150 8I 138 -12 Double 2 155 7I 156.7 1.7 Birdie -1 160 7I 172.1 12.1 Double 2 165 6I 168.3 3.3 Par 0 170 6I 177.6 7.6 Bogey 1 175 6I 169.7 -5.3 Par 0 Average miss     -0.18 yards     Av of Absolute     6.03 yards                       Total is one over par.   1 I did much better today in terms of hitting some close enough to make some eagles. The eagles really help your score.  The average miss is just the difference between target and actual carry distance, which I guess could be used to see if I'm more likely longer or shorter. Looks like I'm about equally off long and short. The average of the absolute valve of my misses kind of tells me how close to the target I usually am.

    • Amazing US Open to watch. Of course I was rooting for Bryson, but a little part of me wanted a W for Rory. Hope this fuel Rory to win a major soon.  Interesting to see how much is going to take for Aberg to win his first major.  Scheffler is human, thank god.. we need more tight final rounds like this.
    • This discussion and Bryson’s media figure reminds me of a trend you see all over the place in social media and Internet in general: staging. I don’t use Instagram a whole lot, but enough to come across videos that are obviously staged, but presented as happening randomly. It falls in like with the “fake news” part of the world where you can’t trust anything. People (influencers, celebrities, politicians etc.) throws stuff out all the time that are straight up lies, pretending ignorance, or twisted to make it sound more interesting than it actually is. Then there’s the overreactions. Youtube and Instagram are filled with thumbnails of shocked content creators “LOOK WHAT HAPPENED 🫣😲🫣”, then it’s some staged or stupid shit. I miss the time when most of what you found online was not staged or stupid. The sad part is that it works, generate clicks, ad revenue and people make millions on that stuff. At least Bryson is primarily a professional golfer. Bryson raking the 18th bunker while holding the trophy puts more of his face in the media. There’s no reason to do it, but it makes for some good photos and he’s building his persona. From the entire week you can see how he interacts with the audience way more than most of them out there. Part of it is probably just being Bryson and giving the audience something extra, but I always have the thought in the back of the head that it’s not the entire reason. Players being emotional, engaging and showing more of themselves than hitting a golf ball is good, but at some point you cross the line into being fake for the sake of attention.
