Its been really weird for me, last week i hit 90 yard gap wedges, this week its around 115. A minor swing change with a huge result.

SW-95
GW-115
PW-125
9-132
8-140
7-147
6-155
5-165
3-190.

4 is missing for a reason, I snapped it. MID SWING.
Ive had R-flex shafts for 2 years, and my swing speed has gone way up, and i was putting too much torque on the R flexes, and when i hit the ball one time, it snapped, right at impact. The weirdest feeling shot, hands down.

SW(56*): 100 yds
GW: 125-130 yds
PW: 135-140 yds
9I: 145-150 yds
8I: 155-160 yds
7I: 165-170 yds
6I: 175-180 yds
5I: 185-190 yds
4I: 195-200 yds

My 3I is a hybrid that I can hit 215-225 yards. If I swing as hard as I can, I can add a good 7 or 8 yds to each club, but considering I am usually hitting 90% shots, the first number is the one that can be taken as the "original."

Depends how far I need to hit each iron(decided to add hybrid and wood distances too);

PW: 150 yds. in...
9I: 160-170 yds.
8I: 170-180 yds.
7I: 180-190 yds.
6I: 190-200 yds.
5I: 200-210 yds.
4I: 210-220 yds.
3I: 220-230 yds.
2H: 235-245 yds.
3W: 250-260 yds.
Driver: 270-290 yds.

Of course, I can hit these clubs closer if needed as well...

As some others have noted, I LOVE all the 10+ handicappers that hit 200 yd 5 irons. They must hit them way far from straight or have the worst short games in the world.

Not too long ago there was a study of varied handicappers. They were asked how far they drive the ball. Without fail they overestimated (when measured) by about 40-50 yards. The single handicappers were more accurate.

The problem is that everyone remembers that one they bombed and got the bounce off the sprinkler head. All of a sudden they can drive 300 yards.

I know some guys that hit long and still manage to be higher handicaps, but they have poor short games or are not accurate. Generally, I play with guys that spout off about their 250+ average drives (I average 215-220) and somehow we end up playing from the same general area. Hmmm....

I'll take my short, semi-accurate game for now. Distance will probably come as my ball striking improves, but all I care about is the score on the card. You can hit your 5 iron from 180 out (and end up short or spray it), I'll take my hybrid on the green.

I don't have a firm grasp on my irons distances just yet. In fact, the only one I have dialed in is my 7I. Nonetheless, here's the distances I used this a.m. when making club selections:

60* lob: 80 (max swing)
48* PW: 100
9I: 120-130
8I: 130-140
7I: 140-150
6I: 150-160
5I: 160-170
4I: 170-180
3I: 180-190+ (when I can hit it)

These distances are truly the platonic ideal of my swing assuming square contact. Actual performance varies considerably.

I have only played once recently and did not get a good idea from that.
I have been to the range a couple times and am not sure if I am shorter that before, or the Top Flite range balls are making a difference. I would guess it's a little of both. If it is the balls, what would be my approx. distances when I am hitting the range balls---

60 degree- 75
54 degree- 90
PW- 110
9i- 130
8i- 140
7i- ?
6i- 170

4i-190
3i-200

Just some random distances.....

Lob......100 yards
PW......140 yards
8........165 yards
6........190 yards
5........205 yards
3-4.....not really sure

My 5 iron might be longer. I play blade sized irons and it seems that when I get in rhythm with my irons I can crush my 5 iron, even further than my 4 or 3.

Well I am just a weakling compared to all of you beasts! But I think I have a reverse weight shift from years of baseball and that kills my distance. At times it bothers me I don't hit it very far, but other times I don't think about it. But I don't get it when one of my buddies, who is not a good golfer and smaller/weaker than I am, is hitting 160yd 8irons........hopefully my (and my new wifes) budget will allow for some lessons in the near future

Driver - 225-245 (Sometimes I feel like I hit it great, at it goes nowhere, but I have hit a couple 260+ this summer with it)

    • A sand trap is not supposed to have 3 inches of water in it. To me that’s temporary, casual water. Just like if your ball lands in a deep rain puddle in the middle of the fairway. I would have gladly hit out of any spot in that bunker. I understand that it’s a different rule. I just think it’s a dumb rule. You are penalized because it rained.  Here’s what I think is the dumbest rule in golf, and all sports for that matter - professionals playing for millions of dollars in a tournament have to carry around a little pencil and scorecard to keep their score and sign it, when there are big scoreboards all over the course and on tv. Can you imagine the Knicks losing because they didn’t count their score correctly? Like I said, I love the game, but it’s time to move into the 21st century already.
    • Sorry to lose you, thx for letting us know
    • I have to bow out for the weekend. I was only in for Saturday as it was
    • Could course committee have an MLR option to declare this bunker GUR?
    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
