What has everyone done since the price of gas/fuel has went up? New car with better MPG? Drive less?

Personally I have not yet changed my driving habits. I drive about 20,xxx miles a year, so I do spend a big amount on fuel. I have been contemplating about getting a vehicle that gets great fuel economy but can't decide if I want to go that route.

It has definetely changed where I play golf. I am now starting to play at courses right by my house on the weekends.

So, How about you?

No changes on my end right now. When I get my new car (next summer), I'm looking at ones that have better MPG than my current ride. My gas is paid for by my employer (a company gas card was my raise one year), but I still want to not have to fill up as often.

I've quit eating and given up on having a family.

Actually, it really hasn't started hurting me too badly yet as I am a single fella, have a relatively good paying job and work lots of overtime . Watching the extra money in my budget shrink though.....

.... (a company gas card was my raise one year)....

That's a hell of a pay raise!! Especially now!

we trade our hummer for a beetle

I drive a Lexus LS400 that get 13 mile per gallon and 20 on the freeway but its paid off.

Doesn't make sense for me to go out and buy a Prius and spend $27K +

I pay $80 a week and a half so I will spend about $200-$250 per month on gas but less than on car payments.

The mid life crisis side of me wants an M5 with the same amount of gas mileage as my Lexus but the logical side says to buy a Camry Hybrid in the future.

Ya I have a vehicle that is paid for so its not a huge deal yet. I was thinking though that the value of my current vehicle is the same as a new Civic and the Civic gets twice the MPG. So I sell my vehicle and go pay cash for the Civic......Decisions..Decisions Being 25, and recently married, I cannot stomach though to drive a four door "family" car. I just bought my wife a new Accord that gets 30 MPG, which is nice.

Hard to justify buying a new vehicle when the one you own is less than a year old and paid for. I drive a 1 ton crewcab 4x4 diesel pickup truck mainly because I have a trailer that I tow from time to time. It is also my daily driver and I only get about 13mpg to and from work. Paid 4.79 for diesel this AM. It cost me about $140 a week or a little over $7k per year to go to and from work. Just can't justify buying another vehicle just to offset some of the fuel cost.

I drive a Range Rover and get about 12 Mpg. But I work from home, and my course is a golf cart ride away, so I dont drive very far. I fill up twice a month. Thank goodness.

Haven't changed much, usually get my friends to drive to the courses we play because they drive company cars

I drive a '99 Ford F-150, so you know Im feeling the pain at the gaspump.
Ive done what I can to maximize my truck's fuel economy. Ive switched to synthetic motor oil (gained me about 2 mpg) and I overinflate my tires (50 psi on the fronts, 40 psi on the rears) and Ive tried to limit hard acceleration, I take my foot off the gas on downhills and I do my best to not speed.
Ive also tried to limit how much I drive and combine trips when possible.
For now, thats really all I can do.
In a year or 2 Im going to be in the market for a newer vehicle and I had planned on trading my truck in on a newer F-150, but with the gas prices being what they are, Ive decided to keep my truck and Im going to buy a Ford Focus.
That way I will still have the truck for when I need to haul something and for driving in the snow, but I will have the Focus as my daily driver. I can carry only liability insurance on my truck, so it wont cost me much at all to keep it around and with what I will save in gas with the Focus, it will pretty much pay for itself and when its paid off I will be money ahead.
Also, in the past Ive made trips from southern Wisconsin to northern Wisconsin almost every weekend all winter long to go snowmobiling, but thats probably going to come to an end.
You figure, it costs me about $150 just to drive up north and back and then it costs me about $50 a day for gas and oil in my snowmobile, not to mention the $10-$20 I spend each day when we stop for lunch at some bar or restaurant. That ends up being a pretty expensive weekend, so Im not sure what the future holds for me and snowmobiling. I enjoy it, but going up north all the time has gotten too expensive and we dont get much snow in southern Wisconsin anymore, so I just might put my snowmobile up on Ebay in December and see what I can get for it.
Besides, that would leave me more money and vacation time to devote on golf during the summer months.

I have an '03 Suburban and I have altered my driving habits by driving just under the speed limit and I watch the tach when I accelerate to try and keep it under 2000 rpms (safety permitting). I have managed to squeeze probably another 4-5 mpg out of it on the highway. In town it just sucks to drive. I also do the same in my Mazda and have noticed better fuel efficiency with it too.

Prices have gone down! The depression is over!

Big change in my family. Our fleet consists of an expedition(5.4 v8), two F150s (2002 and 2005, 5.4 V8's), and an explorer (4.0 v6).

We sold the expedition and got a new accord which gets twice the MPG at least. Next step will probably be a motorcycle for me, which I hope happens, but the parents are a little against the idea me rippin on a street bike.

Tell your parents that this is a safe bike that you wont go 175 mph on........

I start my new job in two weeks so I will see where my job will be in relation to my home. That will be the deciding factor in what vehicle I decide to get.

Their salaries have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the price of gas. They fail to cite in that article that their salaries albeit higher than before have only increased 3.65% from 2 years ago. That is fairly standard among many fortune 50 CEOs.
