GPS does not tell you carry. Unless you somehow know the landing point. I can hit my drive >260yards but that is not all carry. My carry is somewhere around 220-240 yards.

I want to jump in on this handicaps relation to distance but I am getting really tired of feeling like I have to defend my distances.

Im a 16 handicap and when this thread was going on like weeks ago I posted I played 2 holes back to back. one with the wind and one against the wind. 265 against 290 with the wind. We can just take middle ground and call it 277.

I am at sea level and am not even a guy who works out.

HANDICAP DOES NOT RELATE TO DISTANCE. It CAN relate to distance but I feel like lower handicappers feel like they have to be hitting it further than other people because they are better.

I will agree a middle capper probably has a harder time finding the fairway but even this isnt always true. I have dialed back my swing and now go for about 260 in the fairway. I find I am alot better off with a 9 iron from the fairway than a wedge from the rough under trees.

That's the difficulty in judging exactly how far someone can hit it.  What is the baseline?

Three major factors in determining total distance are wind, elevation and fairway hardness.  For example, today on one hole (straightaway, playing about 405 today, hardly any wind) I hit about as good a drive as I can.  When I got up to my ball, it was just about even with the 150 post.  So I could say I hit 250 with my best drives.

However, the ball actually backed up a yard from where it landed (we've had just a bit of rain in Florida lately).  Had I hit the same ball on a different course with relatively firm fairways, I probably would have gotten 20 extra yards. So I could say I hit 270 with my best drives.

But wait! Had I hit that same drive at my old course in Las Vegas (2500 foot elevation and hard fairways) it probably would have carried an additional 5-10%, so that brings my best drives to around 290.

And finally: had I hit that same drive in Las Vegas with a 10 mph tailwind, it would have gone over 300.

There's a lot that goes into determining driving distance, and unless there is some agreed upon baseline, it will always be apples to oranges. Doesn't matter to me whether anyone hits it 217 (average driver distance according to many sources) or 277 (average distance in this thread, more or less). It is the internet, after all.

Index 8 atm for me, so while I had 3 years ago the distance of 4 club less than today and worked the technique, so now I hit irons longer than ever.

up to 5 clubs longer when I really go at it.

Only made 6 greens yesterday, many shots was a tad long and roll over green.

so I get into difficulty what iron I need sometimes since the distance and pulling out a 9i or even a PW seems short.

I then tend to be a club or half long as far which is slowly adjusted over time as I get comfortable.

290y par 4, 20y short green with driver. middle of fairway, pitch and didnt make the putt.

445yard par 5, downhill, driver + PW = Pin high, chip downhill run past pin 4y. managed to 3 putt.

The guys I played with started to go for it as I distanced them a lot.

I like it....  I just see pretty much EVERYONE I play with using these new 'tin-cans on a stick'  and the ball just explodes off of them.   I'm not buying into the latest/greatest,  but I am going to see what new advances there have been in the last 12-15 years!!!!!

For kicks,  I looked up my driver  (it has a Pro-Force 75 extra stiff shaft)  and I discovered it's basically worthless on the secondary market,  so I'll gift it to a new golfer  (a new golfer looking for an 8* extra stiff driver at least!)

Just wondering why you have such a big gap between your 20° and 4 iron? is your 4 iron a 24° or 25° loft?

On average I driver the ball around 246 yards, with the occasional 250 with a draw and 240 with a fade. So what about you?
