Played 9 holes last Sunday for the first time since early December (though been on range weekly). So these distances are full distances in cold, very soft conditions - little roll.

Driver. 230

3w.      190

4h.       170

5h.       160

6i.        150

7i.        142

8i.        134

9i.        126

PW.     118

GW.     110

GW.     95

SW.     80

LW.     65

I'd expect those figures to jump quite a bit in hotter, firmer conditions. But it gives me a good starting point. Also, I've really gained confidence in using the 3 wood off the fairway - I hit it beautifully. So I will probably drop my 52deg GW (100yd) and replace it with 5wood which should go between 4h and 3w quite nicely. Short game is much better than last year so I'd now be happy to do a partial swing with 49deg GW to fill the 100yd gap. Shame I still 3 putt too much!!! Driving with V Series is SO much better than last year, I'm really confident with it. I'm confident of reaching my 250 yard target in Summer with ease, while hitting more fairways!!!. (Carry plus roll).

Why is it I have a slow swing speed (100-102mph) in this forum but the vast majority of people I play along with I hit it the furthest? Could someone explain this to me?

There is Internet driving distance, and Internet SS.

There's also having a 105 mph SS and making shite contact with the ball. I know with my 90-92 mph, I have times when I hit it a long way, and other times I get the same SS reading and the ball goes 150 and dives. It's called "I made shite contact that time." My tempo might have been off, and I made one of those "effortful" swings instead of a fast effortless swing.

So maybe you have a 102 mph effortless swing and make center contact?

Julia, I swing around 106-108 and my smash factor is lousy... I average around 260 carry with my Driver... and I must be mis-hitting on the face somewhere... recently I've been working on swinging my arms slower and using my turn more to generate power... it feels different at first but, I can't turn like I used to... and the timing has been a little off...

Range today for the first time in a few months.  PW - 158, 7-iron 197, driver flew the trees somewhere past 285.  Touch of tailwind.  It's weird how your perspective on distance changes when you start hitting a long way.  Golf courses start seeming shorter and smaller and you're taking a lot of irons off the tee to stay short of trouble.  Had a decent practice session and really felt PA#1 unloading powerfully.  Legs felt a little wobbly and I've lost some serious endurance.  I had to leave half my bucket.  Of course I was in a footrace yesterday and I'm definitely not in sprinting shape.

Wow.  That's lame.  You just simply don't need to hit a PW 158.  If I try to do that now the ball zips off the front of the green nearly every time.  Not sure why I thought this was so great 3 years ago.  It certainly didn't help me break par and it got harder to do consistently as the round got on.  It's been a few years, so here's what I'm around carry on full playing swings now:

56* - 105y

52* - 120y

48* - 133y

9    -  148y

8    -  165y

7    -   180y

6    -   196y

5    -    210

21* hybrid - 225

18* 5w      - 230-245

13.5* 3W  - 235-260

Driver - 275

I can still hit it farther if I want to.  I was at topgolf and I can carry into the back net with a 6-iron, so the distance is still there.  But I'm a much better ballstriker now than when I was 20 yards longer.  I feel a hell of a lot better at the end of the round and I can practice a lot more than I used to.  Way better way to play for anyone creeping up on 40.

So here are a couple of charts. The first is the make up of my set, the second my short, average and long carry distances. Note, these are carry not total. Driver swing speed 98mph, so not fast. Am looking to work on that and get to 105mph if possible.

The make up of this set at least loft wise is anything but standard. From the 3h at 20° through to the 60° wedge there are constant 4° gaps which work for me. I was fitted for the Wishon driver and hybrids and the MP15s. I lucked into the Callaway fairway wood. Just hit one at a range and found that I was getting as much length as I was with my 15° Ping G15 but with far greater height. Am looking for the Callaway 4 Wood set at 17° to maybe get a few more yards off the deck.

This a great post. Carry can differ so much in making different shots. Fading to drawing can be a great difference. I also found, after using the G15 for years, that I got more distance with callaway.

Your gaps with your 4 and 5 iron are very small, have you considered hybrids for your longer irons? I.e. 3,4, and 5?

I need to update my averages, because of my new swing I've been working through winter.  These are my carry yardages:

Driver: 275

3W: 250

3 Driving iron: 230

4 iron: 210

5 iron: 195

6 iron: 185

7 iron: 175

8 iron: 165

9 iron: 150

PW: 135

52°: 115

56°: 105

60°: 90

Swing speed I measured the other day was 112mph with the Driver, and the RPMs were a little higher than I'd like.  But, I am playing a high ball flight right now. So, it makes sense why it seems a bit short with my longer irons.

At 72 years old I hit a Driver 210, 5 at 145, PW 90 yards, but I'm not giving up.  From Wis. it's not easy to practice for 12 months. We only get about 5-1/2 months to golf.  I practice 7 months in front of my TV.  I can hit a wild spit ball into my apt. kitchen wall.

I know how far I was hitting my clubs last year, but this is a new year and I know I am now using more speed and power than I did last year

Last year my club speed was about 85-90 MPH and the distance I was getting from my clubs last year was as follows

Driver - approximately 210-220 yards but hard to judge because I badly sliced it 90% of the time. So far this year I am hitting it straight 80% of the time and getting about 230 on a good hit

3 Wood - 190-220 yards

3 iron 180 yards

4 iron 165 yards

5 iron 155 yards

6 iron 150 yards

7 iron 145 yards

8 iron 130 yards

9 iron 120 yards

PW - 100 yards

Last year I had a few problems with my right elbow and wrist. Seems much better this year.

Once I get more playing time in this year I am confident those numbers should improve based on what I have seen so far

Plus I bought a new Adams 3 and a Cobra 5 fairway clubs to ad to my bag this year

Average distances, and I measured them today on the course from different lies in opposing light breeze conditions.

8i - 155 carry

9i- 145 carry (maybe a little more?)

P - 135 carry

52 - 120+ carry (use this for "127 yard" par 3 off the tee) How far I use it from is a feel thing.

60 - 95-98 carry (Pretty sure about this one. I can hit it over 100 yards if I deloft it severely)

Need to test out how I do with these clubs tomorrow morning. . .

7i - 165 carry (TDB?)

6i - 175 carry (TDB?)

Sigh, if I could hit these clubs. . .

5i??? sometimes 200 total

4i??? sometimes 200+ total

3i??? sometimes 220 total

Sigh, sigh, if I could only hit my woods and hybrid. . .

Driver whatever to 245 to whatever else. No more than 15 yards peak height. . .

On the driving range, when warmed up I can hit all my clubs reasonably.

    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
