Average Distances - How Far Do You Hit Each Club? (And Don't Lie!)

To be honest, 5 iron is one of those guesses. I don't hit it very often for some reason and i just tried to remember about where i was last time i hit it. BZCDR, are you talking about the wedges or the irons?

Wedges up to 9 iron. These new 950GH HT in regular flex and a slower smoother swing has improved my consistency AND my yardages in that area too.

I wondered about the accent on your photographer. At first I though you were Eastern European, and that might have been your dad.

It looks like you can get some distance with your swing, I think people are awaiting your launch monitor results.

My Father-n-Law is Greek-American.  I should post his swing up here.  I will put some launch monitor numbers up at some point.  I would say that I drive the ball far, but in relative comparison I hit my irons quite a bit further.

Best guesses in yards based upon course distances.

Driver: 250-260 (230 to 235 carry), longest drives are close to 300

3W:    230-240 (210 carry), this can still vary if I don't get the right flight

19H:   200 (190 carry)

23H:   180-190 (175 carry)

All irons are MP-52 and 3 degrees flat, 1 degree more loft)

4i (24 degrees):  (~

5i (29 degrees):  (~

6i (32 degrees):  160-165 (160 carry), just starting to hit more reliably the actual carry varies from 155 to 160.

7i (36 degrees):  150-155 (150 carry)

8i (40 degrees):  140-145 (140 carry)

9i (44 degrees):  130-135 (130 carry)

PW (49 degrees):  120 (carry/total distance)

52 degree: full swing 110, normal wedge swing 90

60 degree: full swing 95, normal wedge swing 80

I feel like these distance should be able to get me into the single digits, but the rest of my game is not that consistent.

Of course, I could swing out of my shoes and two things will happen. First, I would not hit fairways and greens. Second, my coach will write bad comments on my swing thread. B-)

This is very close to my distances, except I don't hit the 3W or 4i. I lack consistency with my hybrids, but that is likely due to the course I generally play doesn't require such except on the par 5 holes.

Agreed, these two clubs are really hard to hit.

I'll second the motion that the 4i is harder to hit than it is worth. My hybrid lets me have a much higher ballflight, which I like. I can hit the 4i just fine, unless you want to launched way up in the air to stop on the green. The hybrid just makes itself more useful to me in that way, plus it's a nice club to tee off with on one really short par 4 at my home course to prevent myself from going through the fairway.

I didn't buy a 4i in my most recent set b/c hybrids have higher flight (which I also like), are much easier to hit out of the rough, and as stated, can be useful off the tee. There's a par 4 with a bottleneck fairway I want to stay short of and the very next hole is a par 3 that has one tee box 208 yards back. My 3H still is a bit low for my taste and so am thinking about putting a Matrix Kujoh in it to see how that works.

Try the matrix Ozic xcon 6! I have it my 3h and it launches high yet penetrating! I love it so much I'm getting one in my 1h

Checking the price on the the Ozik, the first price I saw was about $180 so I was about to give up. Then I found a Cleveland U2/18* for only $65. Figured I will pull the shaft and come out ahead. Hey, maybe I'll like the club. That would then leave me with a new Cobra Amp U3/19* and Rocketballz U3. Maybe eventually I will find something I like.

You could actually take a trackman or flighscope lesson and dial-in your yardages that way. That is, if you dont have a buddy who is taking note of the exact carry distances. You get average carry and average total distance with trackman so you could do it that way. Go through the bag.

After playing in a tournament and carrying a 3-iron, I'd like to add a qualification to this endorsement of hybrids. One course in my 3-day tournament had a total yardage of 6100 yards, with a longest hole of 420 yards. The course is right and tree-lined, so missing the fairway usually equals bogey or worse without some serious creativity if you miss by more than 5 yards. I hit my 3-iron more accurately than my 3-h and it goes far enough that even on the longest hole I'd have a 3/4 7-iron in (I was left with a gap wedge or less on a majority of holes). Therefore, it was a no-brainer to me to bring in the 3-iron for tee shots. Though I only needed it once off the deck after a driver struck a branch, it still is easy enough to hit that it's not a problem, you just get more rollout. When I want accuracy over distance/high ballflight, I will take my iron with me.

Wow, seeing all these distances... It seems I'm really a short hitter :o. Below my average distances when having a good contact with the ball (not perfect, nor bad shots). I know I lose a lot of distance because I play the ball very high, but doesn't reallymatter. I'm happy with my game and I have gone in 11 months from hcp54 to hcp28,5, so it's not that bad I guess... XD.

In meters:

5W: 170m

4i: 165m

6i: 135

7i: 120m

8i: 110m

good progress on hcp.

but you are hitting irons too high altitude for their normal golf shot.

probably it happens because of your ball position and width of your stance ( width of feet)

My pro says it's my swing. I got a decent swing, but I tend to lower my club to quickly making the loft of my club higher than it should be. Also this results in my hands not being far enough in front of the ball upon impact, which also makes the loft and ball go higher. Will work on that this winter, when the season is over.

Update: So I've had a trackman analysis. What a beasty-computer! It seems I put a huge amount of spin on my balls. With my 7-iron I was able to hit 9.700 rpm of backspin on it, the pro said this was extraordinay. However, this may be great for approach shots to the green as the ball will drop dead or even spin back, but it comes at a cost (I lost about 12 yards and roll is impossible with 10.000rpm).

It also seams I hit 'normal' distances, but I should be able to get better distances with some adjustments to my swing. My 7-iron (with nex clubs) went about 120-125m carry, 126-135m roll. Would be happy to push it to 140m roll but I'm quite happy with how it goes now. Still tend to hit a bit out-in, making my balls go a bit left, sometimes with a small fade, but working on that too.

I took the advantage of the analysis to order new clubs: Ping i25. Can't wait to have them!

Not trying to be "snarky", but these two statements seem to be contradicting... :hmm:

You are right. The shot with 9.700 rpm only got to 115m (125 yards), It dropped dead, no roll at all. It was also off to the left. Luckily I am not intending to hit my iron-7 shots with 10.000 rpm... :)

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
