biggest problem for me is "smoking buddies" at work. couple guys who like to take a break and drag me along for a quick smoke.

Moving locations in the company next week and time to quit , I only smoke maybe a pack a week or two, but even that is far too much.

These guys I play basketball with they have to smoke after each game. They are around 30 years old, and they need to have a cigarettee after each game because they are coughing and can barely breathe.

haha yeah, idiot, I dont have the hacking/coughing problem "yet"

My dad has quit cold turkey a number of times (somethings fishy there...). His best was no cigarette for 7 years. He's recently ran into heart problems so he's quitting again.

  • 4 years later...

This a resurrection right here.

I knew I was going to quit dip in 2014. Figured Lent was a good time to start. Day 2, cold turkey, no Copenhagen. I'll be posting progress here; just to hold myself accountable.

Any one else quitting smoking/dipping/chewing is welcome to do the same. Let's keep it moving.

Hey fellas been lurking for a long time, love the site. Funny this post spurred me to join.

34 years old chewed for 16 years. I have been nicotine free for 3 weeks cold turkey.

The turning point for me was my 5 year old son asking me about it.

Check this book out

understanding nicotine addiction made a lot of sense for me. I always thought I would enjoy certain activities less without the chew but that's the evil lie. The reason you think you "like" chew is you're relieving the nicotine withdrawl symptoms. Nasty little cycle I am trying to break.

Golfed 9 holes last week and realized I was fine without it.

Quitting tobacco is easy. Hell, I quit smoking four times. :-D

Seriously though, good luck. I have been tobacco free for a long time and, luckily, the last time it took and I have no desire for a cigarette. But I smoked for 17 years and, while I haven't had a cigarette for decades, I still have residual affects from it. Bad stuff.

Good going guys.  I'm on 35 yrs smoke free and can honestly say the best choice of my life.  One morsel of advice: do not wrestle with the devil.. Throw out all the cigs from the house and car. Do not consider 'just one' but get up and talk a walk, change your focus.  Each cig not smoked builds your confidence to avoid the next one.

Best wishes.  BTW i quit 43 times but did not let today's failure dictate tomorrow

Today is my last day with the cancer sticks. I know it's going to be rough, and I'm going to have to change nearly all of my daily habits, but I'm so sick of these things ruling my life and my activities. I feel sorry for my wife and kids.

A bit of advice..If it's hard to do cold turkey, consider the 21 mg patches, they work. Also some like the nicoret lozenges. Cravings only last 3 to 5 mins. Deep breathing exercises really help.

There are stop smoking groups all over, they can be a valuable tool to help you. Best of luck.

This was me, too. Mentally, it's like I never even smoked at all. Zero interest in cigarettes even if someone is smoking one right in front of me. Physically, who knows? Your health risk factors are supposed to get back to pretty close to the mean after 15 years, which is about how long ago I quit.

Warren, just do it!

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
