I'm a full bore newbie to this game, I don't even own a set of clubs yet. I've bought a driver and been to the range a few times but that's about it.

I'm planning to get myself a starter set of clubs this week and maybe getting a round in on the weekend. I'm only playing a nine hole course, so I'm hoping to get through under about 60 strokes.

I'm hoping for about a 60 based on reading here about beginners hitting a little over 100 or so for 18 holes. I have no idea really what I'm in for.

Anyway, what kind of scores did you guys record on your first round?

Shooting an honest 60 for your first round is aiming high in my opinion. I would guess I shot about a 60-65 over 9 for my first round of golf, but I had been going to the range and practice green for years by the time I actually played 9 holes.

My first round ever was probably...120 or 130...I have to estimate because eventually I lost track and stopped keeping score. It was ugly

59. But I knew how to swing since I've played baseball since about 3.

Well damn, I've been playing baseball since about that age too and I

still obviously don't know how to swing!

I remember shooting about 75 for 9 holes the first time I ever played. I'd only been to the range maybe three or four times in my life at that point and hadn't been for years. A bunch of us were away for a weekend and decided to head out to the local course for a hit, there was pretty much nobody around and we hacked our way around, I almost got hit a couple of times standing in places that you'd think would be safe. The best of us shot 72 for nine holes. Good times.

Get ready to queue up the "I'm glad I wasn't playing behind you that day" jokes.

I definitely take the prize for most ridiculous first ever score. I had been to the range 2-3 times before the first 18 holes I had ever played. It was at a private, empty course, and my friend invited me along to play with him. I told him I was horrible, but he didn't care. He told me he thought it would be interesting to see what the number would be if I actually kept score for my first ever round. You guys ready for this?

168.

87 on the front, 81 on the back. My friend shot a solid 86 (over 18 holes). It's a 6500 yard course with a decent amount of water.

Yup. It's pretty ridiculous looking back on it. There was no one else out on the course so I wasn't holding anyone up, except for maybe my friend who spent the whole day laughing and trying his best to give me tips.

Yea, that was quite the interesting introduction to golf for me. I've since broken 90 a few times...over 18 holes!

I shot 125 my first round, 18 holes. I massacred the course with divots (which I repaired btw), and almost emptied a bunker on the green swinging in the sand on 14, lol.

These first scores really aren't that bad. Some people play golf a lot and still shoot 100-120. I would guess my first round on a real golf course was at least a 150+. Even when I started playing golf everyday on my collegiate course in college, shooting around 70ish on nine wasn't uncommon. Nearly every hole required a straight shot or was OB if I missed on one or both sides.

I remember golf went like... oh I missed with my driver by 30 yards to the right O.B shot three, overcompensated left 30 yards, shot 5. auto eleven, auto eleven etc... A hole was a success if I/we didn't auto eleven it The day was a success if we still had a ball left to finish with.

I never really kept track my first rounds but, there was this one kid this year that tryed out for my high school golf team. He was the worst golfer I have ever seen. He actually drove backwards once. He shot a 107 on a nine hole course that is fairly easy.

My first score was around 100 - 110 but i did play a few 9 hole rounds before recording my score.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.

To add to this only 51.9% of golfers ever break 100 in their lifetime *according to National Golf Foundation* so you have to think there are probably some extremely high first round scores.

OK, so maybe 60ish is optimistic.

I'll be shooting this 9 holes with a friend of mine who is also shooting his first round, so it should be interesting to say the least.

I was ten when I played my first 18 with my dad. For some unknown reason he had me play the men's tees rather than the women's. I holed a 20 foot putt to "save" a 19 and that propelled me to a nifty 156. It was a course in Florida that had canals all over it, no telling how many balls I lost.

I strongly advise those new to the game to swallow your pride and play from the front tees.
