I finally started working to remodel the vintage '70s basement we had in our house since we bought the house 3 years ago. I'm putting in a wet bar that has a soffit with 3 recessed lights above it. We have a pool table which will be set up about 8 ft. out from the bar and past there we'll have a couch and HDtv. There will eventually be a 28" LCDtv in the left corner behind the bar.

I don't have pics of what it looked like before I gutted it, but that dark paneling was there which we're going to prime and paint a lighter color and they had dark blue old carpet down there.

Gutted, before I started to frame it out:

There were two sliding doors here that led to the laundry area. I took those out and put in this wall with a pocket door to close the room off.

Start of the base. The bar is 9 ft. straight out, then L's 60" to the left. It extends out from a false wall I framed to hide the plumbing and electrical line. It will have a top that matches the bar top to make a ledge to rest drinks on.

This is the finished upright frame. You can see the soffit with the lights on above it.

I wish my basement was inviting enough to do something like that.

Unfortinatly. My basement is the room that I dread going into. At one time it was decent, but it has that rare basement musty funk smell. We had insulated the walls and wrapped the insulation in fabric (for sound purposes) when I had a theatre down there, but have since pulled the fabric down, so there is a huge wall of exposed insulation. I hate my basement.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

You do realize this takes time away from golf.

Seriously, great project, don't forget to post some pic when you're done.

I'm going to be doing some finishing of our basement in our DE house. It's a walk out with big windows and a sliding door so it will be a nice area when done. I'm going to use an acid stain on the concrete floor this week. I wanted something that was not too formal and I'm cheap so this fit the bill at about $0.65 a square foot for 1000sf.

You're lucky, you don't need a permit, I have to go own up to the gubmint.

Very nice! Seems like the Man Cave has become a necessity these days.

But shouldn't this be a winter project?

thanks everyone- actually, golf is taking away from me working on this but my plan all along was to just take my time with it and pay for things slowly. Aug 1st has been my deadline all along- just in time to throw a "stock the bar party" and then get ready for Buckeye football Saturday's and Browns football Sundays.

Nope, the door mat is U of M. We like to wipe our feet on it, much like how Jim Tressel wipes his feet all over that program...

    • He’s got to be the best player that’s never won a PGA-tournament these days.
    • Day 3 (August 13).  4' putting drill;  this is a modified version of the drill from LSW for short putting.   For context, in 2025, my strokes lost putting is more than 2 per round compared to the 15 handicap baseline, just on putts under 10'.  So that's a glaring weakness I think.  Anyway, so I set up 12 markers around a hole like a clockface, all coins, all face up.  I putt from each in turn, if I make it, I flip a heads over (or pick up if it's tails).  This means I have to make 24 putts eventually, ideally quickly.  It took me 38 attempts to do this, although 9 of the 12 coins were picked up either in the first or second go around.   Anyway, the baseline for a "90-golfer" (per Broadie description) is 37 attempts, so that's pretty good, but I'll keep trying to improve.  For anyone thinking about this, the number would be 30 for an average scratch player.   This was done on a real green at a nearby course's practice area.
    • Day 18: a little under the weather, so just some mirror work while watching TV.
    • That's not the right way to look at it, because you're not going to have a rating of 55 or something for even a 6500-yard par 72. There's a minimum rating (depending on the length), and then +s and -s to that. If a course has a bunch of +s and -s that even out, that doesn't mean the course rating is 100% the length. And what kind of math would it be if the course rating was lower than the formula: 103% length? 🙂
    • Day 316 - 2025-08-13 Mental rehearsals today for about 15 minutes as I'm kinda screwed up in some way. 😞
