Are Staff bags pretentious??

I think I have a staff bag, and yes, it's too big and too heavy, for nothing.
I'm not sure if that would be classified as a staff bag or just a bigger cart bag. Here's a pic:

Whatever it is though, I will replace it with a small stand bag as soon as I can.

I don't think they are pretentious, but they really aren't very practical. I have one that I don't use very often. They are very sturdy and really hold up if you travel a lot, but they are not nearly as practical as the carry or cart bags. If I was a member of country club and had a locker and only rode in a cart I would probably use it, but getting it in and out of a trunk is a pain and it sure doesn't fit on a push cart.....

yeah... I would like one for decoration, but NEVER to use.

Also, those giant staff bags are also a PITA for the guy who shares the golf cart with you, it's kinda like sitting next to the really fat guy on an airplane. There's only so much wiggle room.

Geez, I hope not.  I just ordered a Titleist mid size staff bag.  I plan on using it on a Sun Mountain Micro Cart or when I ride.  I already have a Titleist 14-way stand bag, but I've found I play better throughout the round if I don't carry my clubs.  If the staff bag doesn't work out, it will become a cool decoration in my office to hold extra clubs.  :-)  I love the looks, storage and large opening of the top.  I think a full-sized staff bag would be a little overkill.  I think the mid-sized bag might be perfect.

I've got a Wilson staff bag. I only break it out on the rare occasion that I use a cart. It's very nice though, lots of space to put everything.

I think they are cool, I want to have club glove build me one with my company logo on it done in our colors. Lots of room for extra gear and a picnic. I should probably get one for the wife as well, since she ends up bringing an extra duffle bag anyhow. Lol We would not use them on our home course since we live on the course and walk, but we travel a lot and tend to bring plenty of what if stuff with us anyhow. For us it would eliminate the extra duffle bag. As far as being pretensions ..... Uhhh who cares, it is luggage. Use what works for you and what you like. Dang, I wish I would have thought of this in time for Christmas. Matching customs bags would have been neat..

I have both a cart bag (Callaway ORG 14) which I use when I am using my push cart and a sun mountain 3.5.  Personally a cart bag is just as cumbersome to carry as a staff bag; the only difference is that the cart bag might fit better on a push / ride-on cart.  I got a push cart because carrying was ruining my back through the round and then I got a cart bag because my carry bag didn't fit properly on my Clicgear.  I think staff bags look nicer than most cart bags and are not pretentious at all.

The guys that are worrying about what bag you are using should be the ones you play for money, because they are obviously not too worried about winning rather just looking good on the golf course.  Those guys will help pay for your new staff bag.

My suggestion is to get whatever the eff you want and stop carrying about what other people are going to think...get better and make them talk about your golf game and not your gear.

I have a Titleist 9" Staff Cart bag from 10 years ago that I have been using and it has seen it's day. I just retired it and while I was waiting for a new stand bag (Titleist), I pulled out the 10.5 Tour bag from the 90s. This thing is big. I played with it the other day and could barely get it strapped to the cart. I played with my buddy and 2 strangers and one of them made a comment like the last time he saw a bag that big was on Caddyshack. Well after playing from the tips and finishing the front bogey-bogey for 38, there were no more comments (scraped it on the back for a 78). But to be fair, it is one big ass bag from the old Tommy Armour Tour (same bag that Freddie and Davis used) that can hold the kitchen sink. My friend that played the tour had it embroidered for me back in 1992 and the thing still looks new and all the leather has held up really well. But again, it is one big  bag. If I am riding, I like a big bag, after all I am not carrying it. But if you don't have any game or have thin skin then you should go with the smaller less obnoxious size cart staff bag.

I just received my new stand bag and love it for practicing.  It does OK on the cart so occasionally I will pull out the big bag when I am in the mood.

I have a staff bag and there is nothing better to have if you are riding a power cart which is the mode of travel at the two locations I am in during the winter. There is a lot of room, no jamming and with the extra room in the 10 inch top, I can forcefully fire my club back into the bag after a bad shot. :)

In the summer, I will walk and carry them in a Ping carry bag...with one strap. I grew up with the bag on my one shoulder and just can't get used to the two straps.

It looks good and would be awesome to have with my gamer clubs, your name on it and some sort of logo. But it's purpose would be to show it off when I'm not on the golf course.

My stand bag, which is on the heavier side of what's available on the market, has plenty of space and is way more versatile. In my case, it would look hideous to try and walk every round with a staff bag.

However, I've seen a couple of players at my club with them and all of them use trolleys. To me, there isn't much use for one on the course.

The titleist mid staff works great with the micro cart I have the same set up. I actually went thru a few bags over the years with a push cart and the titleist mid staff seems to work the best

Both of the guys I rather dislike at my home course have TM staff bags. Which logical fallacy am I committing in my consequent assumption that anyone with a TM staff bag must be a douche?

I've always wanted a staff bag, but I have to agree about how impractical they are. My grandfather just gave me a Palmer staff bag he had in the garage for decades and I'm using it as a decoration/storage piece in my basement den. The thing is beautiful but it's also massive. Right now I've got two full sets of irons, three drivers, a 5w, a 1 iron, and six wedges. And as I look at it while I type this, I can definitely fit another set of irons. Why I'd need that  much space on the course, I have no idea. I'm hoping to pick up another older cheap staff bag or two for the den, they really look cool. But not really tempted to trot it out, even though I wasn't very happy with my Wilson stand bag this year on a cart (which I usually ride, sadly).

Agreed.  I got my Titleist midsize staff bag today, and it fits great on my Sun Mountain Micro Cart.

I was afraid the Title midsize staff bag might be a bit pretentious, but after getting it, I love it.  It's very classy, organized well and a perfect size.

909 D2 driver, 909 F2 15.5* & 18.5*, 909 H 21* & 24* all with Voodoo stiff shafts, AP2 710 6-PW NS Pro 970 stiff shafts, AP2 GW S300, Vokey 54.11 & 58.08, Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 34".  The driver, FW & hybrid headcovers take up a lot of space.  Neoprene Coverupz are a good option that take up less space and don't scream "steal me"!

AND on a 2010 Sun Mountain Micro Cart...

It fits really well.  In fact, there is a padded area with a suede-like material right where the bag sits on the mounting yoke of the push cart.  Unlike a stand bag the clamps hold the staff bag in placer perfectly without any twisting or shifting on the cart.  The bag also fits perfectly between the wheels with no adjustment necessary of the distance between the two front wheels.

Here is another angle.  As you can see, it doesn't look too big on the cart.

IMO, this is a great option.
