Right now i just write down the number of shots, but how would i go about writing down other important stats and what are some important stats to keep track of so i know what to work on at the range/practice green. Please explain what the stat is to...like what a Green In Regulation is...still don't quite understand, Im still new to golf....Thanks!

I personally keep track of my score (obviously), Fairway Hit on any Par 4 or longer, number of putts, and number of penalty strokes.

I use www.oobgolf.com to track my scores (although you could definitely use the Scorecard service offered here!), and those four stats feel me a large number of statistics derived from them. GIR%, overall fairway accuracy, scramble %, putts per hole, trouble holes, stuff like that.

To answer your other question, Green in Regulation (GIR) is when you get the ball on the putting surface two shots under par, so you're putting for birdie. GIR on par 3 is hitting it from the tee directly to the green, par 4 GIR is on in two, and par 5 GIR is on in three.

To explain the term I used in my post, a "scramble" is when you miss hitting the GIR, but manage to save par. My scramble rating is terrible (22% on a good day), and is something I'm trying to work on. =P

On the course I keep up with score and putts. I can remember fairways hit. Up and downs and GIR's can be calculated. I use Loopr

I while back, I saw a wonderful system for tracking your shots. On a scorecard, use one row for total strokes, the next for putts (would also be nice to put the length of your first putt here too), the next for fairways and last for greens. On the fairway and greens, you put a check mark or round dot if it was hit, arrow right if you missed right, left for left, up and down for short/long. You can combine arrows if you missed long/left, short/right, etc. Anyone else use this?

Just make sure you keeping pace if you are doing this.

I will use one square to write in the score. Under that I will put an 'X' in the box if I hit the fairway. If I don't hit the fairway I will put an arrow to the right or left so I can see where my misses were. Under that I will put an 'O' in the box if I hit the green in regulation. Under that I will put the number of putts I had. With that info I can keep track of everything I need. You can also add one other line by noting a shot OB or in the sand, or anything out of the ordinary on the hole.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Oh man, this is brilliant and helps me a ton. I was trying to right down my score, what club I used, where it landed (short/long/left/right), number of chips and puts (1C-2P), and a small comment about what I thought I did wrong (hit it fat etc). I was just about to go out and buy a small composition book to take notes before I read this. It will help me a lot and since there are so many unused spots on the scorecard, I can be more organized.

Try Scorecard for all the stats you need. It even gives you a scorecard you can print and just fill in (See attached for example).

I keep track of my number of strokes, GIR's, and putts.

You might consider using a check mark or a dot for a fairway hit. Subliminally, and X might be a negative image. Just a thought.

Did it occur to you to type in "green in regulation" in Google?

- I keep my score as the differential from par -- i.e., a par is a "0", a
bogie is a "+1", etc. That way I can quickly scan the card and see how I am
doing relative to par. I keep this as the top line available on the card.
- In the lower right corner of the box with my score, I enter the number of
putts in very small figures.
- In the second box down, I make a check mark if it is a GIR, or the letter
"M" meaning Missed (the green) with a subscript of either S, L, R, or Lg.
- My third box down is "Pts": estimated Length of Putts; written as 20/5
or 30/8/1.
- In the fourth box down I make a check mark if I was in the fairway off the
tee; or M, with a subscript of either L or R if not in the fairway.
- In the last box for the hole, I enter my "Pluses" or "Minuses"; for
example a really good drive gets a "+D"; a really bad putt gets a "-P".
At the end of the round, I total up all the data for the round and enter
into a spreadsheet. No doubt this can be overdone, but it's just a normal habit for me now. I am considering only noting only the plus strokes, but the minus strokes are the ones needing attention.

I keep my score like this too, the more detailed the better. After I enter my score in the handicap database at the clubhouse, I take my card home and enter all my stats on my computer spreadsheet. For example, I have an approach shot of 198 yards, a fairway lie, and a 4i in hand. Wind in negligible. I hit the shot solid, and miss the green left, 40 feet from the hole.

I record all of this in these categories . Shot - approach Shot type - full Lie - fairway Distance - 198 yards (always to flag) Wind - no Club - 4i Swing quality - solid GIR - no Miss - Left Miss distance - 13 yards This may seem tedious to most, but it pays off over time. For example, using some fancy excel skills and statistics, I can group my data into a normal distribution by club. This gives me an idea of how much I miss that club left and right, or short and long, and by how much. Its like playing Tiger Woods on Xbox and having that circle where your shot is likely to land, but in real life! Also, since all my stats are categorized, I can even predict my score based on how much wind there is, how often I miss the fairway, ect...

Grade your course management. Give yourself an A for a hole if on every shot, when you are done and are thinking back, you used the best course management you could have based on the information you knew at the time. You used the right club, you picked the right shot, picked a shot you had practiced before, and did not take a large risk for too little reward, and did not get mad, and did not think about the last bad shot or the next hole while you should have only been thinking about the one next shot.

If golf is x percent mental, then you need to keep track of where you are on that issue.
