As I was watching the Women's US Open, I noticed a little surprise on the leaderboard. ABC includes the players' nationality by putting a little flag next to their name. I glanced over the leaderboard and saw Michelle's flag. The star spangled banner. Now, I understand that she was born in the United States; confirming her citizenship in the US. However, I think she should be considered a Korean; since her parents are both Korean. What are your views?

She's as American as anyone else. Everyone in the U.S. is an immigrant if you go back far enough, and "far enough" usually isn't very far - two or three generations.

I don't even think she can speak Korean...

She's as American as apple pie and Chevrolet. The easy way to tell is to count the number of times she says "like" or "you know" during interviews.

As Erik pointed out, if you go back far enough, we are all immigrants. It does not make any difference what nationality her parents are, she is an American. On a small side note, I spent a couple days in New York on vacation and toured Ellis Island. Walking around and seeing the millions of immigrants that walked through there to come here to gain a better life and freedom is really awe inspiring.

American - for all of the reasons stated before...especially when she opens her mouth and sounds like, you know, like a typical, you know, American teenager. You know?

To paraphrase Bill Murray, my forefathers were kicked out of every respectable country in Europe. We're all mutts. But we're American mutts!

Wie actually made a point of learning Japanese in High School b/c somebody realized (correctly, I'd guess) that she could attract a lot of attention (ie. money) in golf-crazy Japan.

she's definately american, although I am a firm believer you can be born abroad and still be considered an american golfer, I was born in Venezuela but moved to the us when I was 4 months old because my mother was american, I consider an american and if I ever made it to that stage the us flag would be next to my name

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
