My girlfriend lives right behind a hole on a private course. I have walked to the fairway before. I am so tempted to sneak on to play the hole, just the one behind her house. Like 7-8 pm or so.

Anyone else ever pull this scam?

I don't really think it would be worth it, but by all means, go for it.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

I do this all the time as my grandma and brother live on the same country club. The pro tells me to do it.lol

depends on how serious they take trespassing...
ive played on closed courses before... but only because i worked there and got the okay from the head pro... heck i played with his son on christmas day... lol... only draw back was there were no pins to aim at

That's the perfect scam. Usually at country clubs you won't see anyone around in the evenings. So long as you are dressed the part and the club isn't too terribly exclusive you won't catch too much trouble.

This is probably going to show me up as a conservative square but this really bothers me. I often play in the late/afternoon evening and I'm always seeing people on the course who are clearly aren't members or paying customers. They're not in the proper attire, they dig up the course and don't repair their pitch marks.

Now I realise you're probably a decent chap who wouldn't dream of doing any of the things I've listed, even so, members at golf courses work hard to pay their membership fees and you would be ripping all of them off if you trespassed.

If there's nobody around and you treat the course with respect, why not? I'll bet the course's "guests" trespass in her back yard all the time and nobody calls the cops and complains about them right? I would consider it more of an unwritten reciprocity agreement...

Sorry, I can not do it, I feel like I am steeling or doing something wrong.

It is steeling. Just becuase no one is on the course it doesn't mean you aren't taking something of value that you are not entitled to.

It would be the same as steeling someones car when no one is driving it and bringing it back, before they notice. Did they lose anything? Yes, the wear and tear on their car same as you going on the course.

I have played at a local course when no one was around last december but I was also a member there at the time and walked the 9 holes I played, which is free if you're a member so other than maybe being there when I wasnt supposed to, I didnt really do anything wrong. It was about 40 degrees that day and I actually didnt play that poorly dont remember my score but I did get one birdie on one of the par 3's I played, I dont get many birdies. As far as sneaking in the worst that could happen is that they would probably run you off if they catch you but if its a private course I'm assuming you dont play there anyway normally. Like some said, if you dress like you're a member I doubt anyone would think you looked out of place as long as you behaved properly.

Went late yesterday to play the back nine at a local course and a couple guys came out of a backyard with clubs to hop on the hole we were playing. It didn't bother me because the jumped behind us but I know if They were slowing up the game by playing in front I would be pissed off. we were struggling to get in 9 before dark as it was.

so answer for me is, if you treat the course with respect and do not interfere with the play of paying players then go for it. If people come up behind you then get the F**K out of the way until its clear again.

This is a very serious offense we are talking about and matched in severity only by tearing off one of those "do not remove under penalty of law" mattress tags.

Yeah, on a busy course it would get quite annoying to have anyone jump around even if they were paying customers, thats one rule every course has, dont jump from hole to hole but that would also probably be the easiest time to sneak on as you probably wouldnt get noticed. If it interferes with play from paying customers then it can be a problem

i don't have much sympathy for expensive clubs, private or otherwise. golf suffers from a reputation for being exclusionary, and $100 green fees and $5000 memberships don't help with that reputation. if you sneak onto reasonably priced munis, i think that makes you a bit of a jerk. if you are playing a few holes at shinnecock (or whatevs) all the power to you. they can afford it.
