So, is anyone in the US getting up early enough to watch the Open Championship?

I got up about 30 minutes earlier than normal and got myself ready quickly so I could get in about hour of viewing time before I had to leave. I will do the same tomorrow.

I love the weekend. I can get a couple hours of viewing in before anyone else in the house is moving around since I am always up early.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Woke up at 6 AM and have watched all coverage since then. Headed out to course in a little bit and may watch some more this evening.

I missed 2 hours worth. I was thinking ESPN so when it didn't come on at 8am, I started searching. Oh well.

How can a 59 year old man shoot 65 and the number one player in the world shoot 71? Crazy.

It's in HD...at least from what I saw this morning on TNT

No it's not. It's 16x9 standard definition.

I only caught about 5 min before heading out to work and saw it taking up the full screen on TNT HD instead of the normal non-HD 4x3 when it's like that....

Yeah, like I said, it's not HD. It's wider standard def. It might be 540i, but it's not 720p or 1080i or 1080p.

Wow. I can't wait for tomorrow.

7 to 8 - Golf
8 to 1 - 18 holes
2 to 7 - Golf
7 to 8 - 2 1/2 Men
8 to 9 - Family Guy
9 to Sleep - Saving Private Ryan (all-time favorite movie)

Man do I love summer vacation.

It's a tradition for me. I woke up at 6:30 and watched on DirecTV/TNT. It was my birthday so I watched a couple hours before heading to the country club and playing 36. I'm exhausted, but now that my kids are in the bed, I'm watching the rest I DVR'd while drinking a Sam Adams. Theres something about watching it in the early morning Live that has intrigued me. definitely my favorite major to watch.

Not sure who your provider is(Cox for me), but according to my tv set and cable box it's in hd. I can tell without a doubt that it's not standard. Looks exactly like all the other HD tournaments I've watched on the golf channel HD and CBS HD. Who's your cable/dish provider?

On a side note, I was disappointed with the crowd turn out for the first round. It looked pretty slim from the coverage I saw.

It's irrelevant who is providing your coverage in the U.S. It's all using the BBC feed. Upconverted SD is not HD. The BBC isn't broadcasting in HD, and you're not seeing HD.

NEXT YEAR will be the first time we see the Open Championship in true HD. But my hunch is the BBC camera operators still won't know how to follow a golf ball (though, admittedly, it's tough against solid grey skies). http://blogs.golf.com/presstent/2009...tish-open.html

Source: URL Above Thanks to the backwards BBC, you won't be able to watch the British Open in HDTV this week. Not even on American broadcast partners TNT and ABC. The reason is that TNT and ABC have to use the international feed provided by the BBC, and that feed will be in standard definition, the 2009 equivalent of a black-and-white broadcast. (TNT and ABC will "up convert" the standard definition feed for HD broadcast, but that will just allow people to see the broadcast in full-screen format -- in other words, no black bars.) In case you think we're being too hard on the BBC, here's a list of events broadcast in HD: the Tour de France, Wimbledon, the Masters, the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the PGA Tour, the game show Jeopardy!, etc. ABC and TNT don't sound too happy about it either.

I can tell without a doubt that it's not standard. Looks exactly like all the other HD tournaments I've watched on the golf channel HD and CBS HD.

Oops. You're not as discerning as you think.

D'oh! I'm like 65 years old and I can tell it's not HD.

Anyway... I get up about half an hour into the Thur/Fri coverage. Lets me skip a few commercials but not be so far behind I still feel like skipping up to live.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
