This came up at lunch today. A guy thinks he can throw a ball and score under 130 on a course. On a Par 72, thinks he can shoot under 130 just by throwing the ball and rolling in putts underhanded.

Has anyone ever heard of someone trying this? There are some guys that want to bet but we want to set a realistic goal or number.

I tried to google it to see if anyone has posted or done something like this before. I am sure this isnt the first person to think of this.

I hope he wins the bet, because he's going to need the money to pay for his Tommy John Surgery.

LOL! This argument is usually started by a "non" golfer SHO SAYS.. "I can throw the ball further than I can hit the damn thing!"

There is no way he can do it. Think about it, could you stand at one end of a football field and throw a small golf ball the length of two fields???

Answer is: NO WAY

what about a short par three that plays down an extreme hill, perhaps you could throw it more accurately than you could hit it with a club there.

It would take five or six heaves, minimum, for most people to get from tee to green on a typical par-4. So I think it would take 90-100 "strokes" just to get to the greens. And that whole "rolling in putts underhanded" thing is probably harder than it sounds...but perhaps no more or less difficult than using a putter.

At any rate, I think 130 tosses is unlikely (but not impossible) for the average guy on the average course. Maybe the guy who was thinking about sneaking onto the private course after-hours should try it there.

Take the bet. He'd have to average 7 to win (126). I don't think he gets that done well at all. How far can you throw a golf ball? It's not as far as you'd think. If it's 100 yards (it's not), that will already put him at five just to get on the greens of the par fives. Four to get on the greens near par fours.

And, again, it's not 100 yards. More like 50.

I doubt he'll finish out the full 18. He'll be lucky if he finishes 9 holes throwing. Take the bet and tell him if he quits he loses.

throwing a golf ball is a sure way to destroy your shoulder

now a baseball is a different story. so I will calculate a baseball throw. Ill apply frisbee golf rules. running start from tee and everything else is fixed stance. dry cut fairways

420 yard par 4. off the tee, maybe 100+ yards after roll. Basically throwing from a an outfield foul pole of a high school field to home plate. With roll, should be easy, aim is much more accurate so ill hit fairway everytime(hence roll)

from a fixed stance 100 yds is going to be tough, so for par 4's the best one could do is get on in 4-5. Par 5 lets say 6-7. par 3 1-2

so getting on the green your looking at getting on it 90 strokes at BEST.
8 to get on par 3's
30 to get on par 5's
50 to get on par 4's

next is the putt. lets say he can use a golf ball and roll or push it. Now throwing an approach shot is much easier IMO than using a club so for starters hell be within 20 feet everytime of the pin. 4 putt no worse IMO if he rolls a golf ball. 72. He will need to 2-3 putt to break 130.

NO WAY CAN HE get under 130 from WHITES with a golf ball, there isnt enough resistance in the object to get any speed. A baseball from the tee and fairways maybe.

If he is smart, he can do it. If he trys to heave the ball in the air, he has no chance. He needs to throw side arm very hard and basically roll the ball around the course. I think you could easily get the ball to go 150ish yards on dry fairways this way.

Dude. No way.

Plus, throwing side-armed means much less control of direction.

Sideways throw is a good idea (roll is key). Plus, check out this link , 100 yds is a pretty good throw, but doable. Yes, you might throw your arm out, but only if you try to throw it 100+ yds. If you keep it in the 90 yd range, then you could probably do it for 18 holes. Plus, he could be a high-school pitcher for all we know?

Remember it's a bet...so, I'd say a score within 10-15 shots means it's a good bet, and possible to beat 130 (minimize mistakes, a few 2 putts).

Golf ball doesn't have enough weight to be thrown 100 yards by an average person. Side arm isn't a bad idea but if theres any holes that you have a 60 yard carry to the fairway that idea is out. Either way take the bet because unless he's got a bionic arm he won't make it past hole six.

Apparently, the world record for tossing a golf ball is 170 yards. So it's conceivable the same guy can shoot a respectable round...

GOLF BALL ?

NO way ! IMPOSSIBLE, no way to build up velocity. As with any record 170 is quite a toss. Did the Hammer do that? POW!
If he were still a decent pitcher, he would rip his tendons to pieces,

a golf ball is designed to compress. I find it close to impossible to throw one 100 yards. 170 I find to be hard to believe. Maybe on a airport runway. POW!

Now I have to throw one to see.

Just for kicks threw one outside my office across 260 foot property line.

It carried 80-85 and yea 100 yards is doable on cut fairway, but only with pro v1-x.
This is throwing a golf ball and it hurts like hell.

KEY FACTOR IS whether he is standing still after the drive or does he get a running start? Without the running start he wont get 100 yards.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
