Any tips to do this? I'm looking for some tips advice or drills that cab help me make this swing change, and make it as painless as possible.

For clarity, I'm talking about the swing path to impacting the ball.

Thanks

If out to in swing is bad, why is not a in to out swing bad? I think a good swing is down the line. A down the line swing is a very easy to figure out and fix and is very predictable. You are aiming at a flag, why not swing to where you want to hit the ball?

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

The best advice I can give you is to use lead shoulder control from “The Golf Swing and Its Master Key Explained”. That should make it easy, and there is a left handed version. The author advocates a slightly inside-out clubhead path.

Some good players have said that they swing straight down the target line, but if you think about it, that does not make sense, because the clubhead is swung on a circular path. A “down the line” path would be possible only with a putting stroke.

Also, the inside-to-inside path used by swing machines like “Iron Byron” should be left to swing machines. When a human tries that, it usually becomes outside-in. However, there are some pros who play a fade for their normal shot. Okay if it's consistent.

I dont agree with this. From what Ive seen down the line type swings are very disconnected from the body and weak IMO.

Op if you are trying to get rid of the out to in, try taking the club back with your shoulders turning first and during the transition try droping your trail shoulder down while rotating your hips to clear out of the way. If Im not mistaking I just read an article in Golf Digest that can better describe what Im telling you.

I would agree with MiniMoe. I fought a terrible slice for a long time and then a terrible hook for long time for these 2 reasons. I switched to a down the line style and I hit it longer and straigther consistently. Perhaps a slight draw or fade would be okay, but an all out cut or duck hook miles from your target would be alright. The way I look at it though, is that you lose distance whenever you start going right and left. You might hit it 250 yards straight or 225 straight + 25 yards to the right. If the swing plane isn't that great then perhaps you would meet in the fairway at 225 in the center rather than in the trees.

a little stronger left hand and bring your back shoulder back and down in your setup. worked for me. it will be a little drastic at first with you firing off some wicked hooks, but from that setup you can find your happy medium.

Far be it from me to perhaps disagree with someone who's +4(!) but something that works for one may not work for others. I'd always advocate in-to-out attack but you don't want to be over-doing it.

As for drills, here's the sort of things that work for me if my game is off:

- practice by setting the balls up with the name slightly inside of the target line and try to hit the name

- make sure your takeaway is one-piece and that you make a proper shoulder turn

- always, always, always initiate your downswing with your lower body either by rotating hips out the way or a slight weight shift down the line. Never, ever lead the downswing with hands, arms, shoulders

- put a tee or coin ~18" behind ball, slightly inside the line. Try to brush over tee/coin on takeaway; should promote a decent turn on the backswing

- try and hold the rotating open of your shoulders for a fraction as they come through impact (don't try too hard; you might hurt yourself!)

- this might not make sense but.....put 3 balls on the ground roughly where you'd address the ball. Have them in a line in front of you about 4-6" apart and then move the one furthest away about 3-4" towards your right foot and the one nearest you about 3-4" towards your left foot. Hit the centre (unmoved ball) without hitting the other two; this should only be possible with an in-to-out swing path and'll help groove the right attack

One thing I've started using some after working with my instructor is the Swingyde. It's only about $25-$30. Not only will it help with correct hinge of the wrists, but as you start your downswing, if you "think" about keeping the guide touching your arm as long as possible, it will naturally help with going inside-out. I'm a beginner so maybe this is a little rudimentary for some, but it has already helped me in the short time I've been using it.

I'm a rank hacker but I have been battling a slice, mostly caused by an over the top swing, for some time and have tried the above drill and also a drill where you stand at the bottom of a slope and try to swing up the hill for the past week or so. On the weekend I hit one slight fade and 1 duck hook, apart from that I was hitting the ball with very little side spin. I did hit to the left of target quite often though.

I'm going to persist with it though as it was a vast improvement. I took about 7-8 shots off my average since I got my new clubs.

Look at the latest edition of Golf Digest this month, great article about slicing the ball from golf tec, might help you.

First...get some personalized lessons to better understand what you are doing...

With that said...I have heard this same advise from from Hank Haney, David Leadbetter, and recently from Michael Breed's show on the golf channel "The Fix". I have tried it, and it works, but you have to practice, practice, practice..... Good Luck!

Easiest thing i learned to get my swing on the right plane on the downswing is to naturally let my arms fall, it got me on the inside to outside swing plane and has been a great way to ease up on any tension.

I would say this single thing (dropping into the slot / attacking from inside / let arms fall, etc etc) is the only thing keeping me from enjoying myself out there. I am taking lessons right now and we can clearly see how steep I am coming down into the ball. I chunk / shank it more often than not. When I do feel this "dropping into slot" feeling, it is like automatic. Center contact, butter, whatever you want to call it, the swing just works and the ball is gone. I Just need to groove this feeling...

The golf digest article tells you to drop your back shoulder instead of turning across, made a big difference in my swing thought.

There are a million ways to swing a club. If you can control the ball, it works, if you can't control the ball, it does not... simple as that. A down the line swing makes it easier to control the ball because your timing does not have to be perfect to square the club at impact. If done correctly, there is no loss in distance because distance comes from the proper release with proper weight transfer at the moment of impact.

The balls flight is controlled by two factors, swing path and face angle. Swing path dictates what direction the ball starts, face angle dictates which way the ball will curve after that. I always figured if I want to hit a ball to a target, then why not swing toward that target. It makes things so much more simple... and I love simple.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

I'd love to have a down the line swing path. My current over-the-top is pissing me off and when I try and practice I just can't get away from it. I try to keep my right elbow close to my body, try to feel my arms just drop at first, the 3 ball drill, etc. What's happened is all this trying to revamp my swing has made it so my swing feels like the worst most unnatural thing every. Without being able to afford lessons I am kind of at a loss for what to do.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread and registered to add my two cents.

From the very end of last season to the start and middle of this summer, my swing just fell apart. No distance, no control, no anything. Pretty bad. Like going for 40-45 for nine to 60-70.

I've been trying to move to an in-to-out swing because my down-the-line swing was straight, but I was getting almost nothing as far as distance. Since moving to an in-to-out swing my distance has jumped back up and my accuracy hasn't changed much for the worse.

Golf is just like baseball (my other favorite sport to play). Whatever works, works. But so far the in-to-out works for me.
