I played a Junior Scratch in Portarlington (Ireland) yesterday and one of the guys had a small circular scar almost dead centre on his forehead. He got hit by a drive three years ago, by a someone who 'forgot' to shout fore. I've been hit a few times - never seriously - but I've heard horror stories, Anyone else out there carrying battle scars?

I was hit once by a playing partner back in HS... he was looking for his ball in the trees and I was standing up next to the green about 80yds away waiting to play my chip, but I was a good deal off to the side. The next tee box is pretty close to that and I started talking to one of my friends... next thing you know MMMIIIIIIIKKKKEEEE!!!!!! I ducked and it glanced off my shoulder.

Another time I had someone bounce a drive into my arm... thankfully I got my arm up, because after hearing a thund I turned and saw the ball comming at me and reacted. I proceeded to hit their ball into the woods since they had already hit up on us once and the course was packed (i.e. we were waiting on the group in front).

Thankfully both shots just left small bruises... I've never been hit real bad...

One super close call though... A friend of mine's cousin joined us (not real good) and I was standing 50yds ahead on the opposite side of the fairway... Tim hits this toe slice 4ft off the ground and I dive out of the way while it crashes into my bag... probably the most scared I have ever been playing golf. The way it sliced made it appear to be tracking me... I froze... everything was slow motion... and just in time I moved.

Never hit anyone and I've never been hit although I did have a ball fly about two inches from my face one time. I could feel and hear the ball screaming past my head which was a bit scary. Ever since then I just turn my back towards the shout and pray.

I got hit in the face in HS when I was a caddie. I was on the right of the fairway next to a large patch of pine trees maybe 150 yds off the tee. Somehow the guy on the tee hit it through the trees right into the side of my face. It hurt a lot and he claimed it wasn't his ball and never apoligized. My parents knew some high up people at the club and he was suspended from playing for 6 months.

Been hit 3 times:

- One of my first times playing, a par-3 course. I had seen golf on TV and on the X-Box, and seen players hit around trees. I was behind a tree, so I tried to hit a 40-yard SW around a tree... long story short, I couldn't. I hit the tree, and it hit me.

- Within a week of that - I forget the order - I was at the same hole at the same par-3 course, only this time, I was walking from the tee to the green. Someone on an anti-parallel hole pulled his tee shot, called fore, and like an idiot, I put my bag down and then ducked between my bag and him. But I got hit on the bounce.

- First time breaking 100, hit between the shoulder blades by someone's tee shot on 18. A kid, 16 years old or so. It took 15-20 minutes for me to feel the pain, by which point I had told the folks who hit me that I was fine. He said he thought we were on the green - we clearly weren't; we hadn't hit our second shots yet on this par-5. But, I felt well enough after it to go back the next day and back up my first sub-100 round with a 92.

Haven't been hit in over 2 years now. Let's keep it that way!

I hit a guy once back in high school after sculling about a 30 yard pitch shot over the green. The tee box for the next hole at this particular course was right behind the green (brilliant design), I yelled fore and he ducked. Well, the ball hit the edge of the cart path he was standing on (on the fly) and bounced directly up into his cheek and left a huge bruise. I felt absolutely horrible and thought for sure he was going to come back there and kick my ass. However, he was very sympathetic when it was all said and done but I've been extra sensitive about yelling fore ever since though I don't think that could have been avoided since I yelled in plenty of time anyway...just bad luck.

Two stories.

1) Older guy I play with sometimes told he once got hit, in the balls, while standing BEHIND a buddy! The guy came down so steep and topped it off the back side of his driver and bounced it backwards into my friends' nuts!

2) My little brother was a college baseball player, is 6'6", and very stubborn and arrogant in his sporting endeavors. I've worn him down, and this event helped, but for a long time I couldn't convince him that just taking a baseball swing and pretending the ball is a low fastball, middle-out, and trying to drive it to center field, as HARD as possible, was not a good approach on the golf course. He'd just stand up there hacking as hard as he could, and his one or two 320-340 drives that made it on or near the fairway would be his "proof" that he just needed to keep his own approach and eventually he'd get consistency.

Anyway, we're on the 11th, which is a long par 4 (450+ from the blues), and the 8th green is up a hill to our left. He winds way up and absolutely mashes the ball, about 45* left (he's a lefty). There's a woman sitting in her cart on our side of the 8th green, maybe 40 yards away. We're literally just barely trying to start yelling "fore" when it ricochets off her or her cart. We're not sure at first, then she slumps out the side of the cart. Oh shit...

Turns out he ball glanced off her chest just below her collar bone, leaving a nasty welt, and then absolutely shattered her wrist. She was a doctor and was sure it was broken. She was pretty cool about it actually, was most pissed cause she was hitting a 40 through 8, which was really good for her...

I was playing behind two groups once and was waiting to tee off on the first green. First group was an older couple and the second group consisted of two 12 or 13 year old kids.

The older couple teed off (including the woman from the reds) but drove back to let the two young kids through, leaving their cart facing the tee on the left. The first kid winds up and overswings a bit, and absolutely smacked the windshield of the cart with his tee shot.

Thank goodness the windshield was up, or else the woman would have taken a drive to the face.

I took one off the calf one time when I was 15 - playing in practice in high school and the kid behind me shanked an iron shot, got me on the fly. It left a pretty bad welt, but it hit a spot where there was a lot of muscle, so no real damage other than a bad bruise.

When I was a senior playing in a tournament, I hit a blind tee shot over a hill - two coaches from another team were standing in the blind spot, and I got one of them on the fly, broke two bones in his hand. I apologized for what happened out of self-preservation, but it was his own damn fault for standing in a blind spot.

I did not start playing golf until I was in college back in 1991 and a buddy of mine and I hit the course in Athens, TX. I think this was actually his first round and we were riding. He sets up to hit a long iron and I tell him to wait just a second so I can move the cart, I am about 15 yards away and at a 45 degree angle from him. He says its ok and starts his swing as I am desperately trying to get the cart into reverse. Well he blades the crap out of the ball and it glances of the side of my foot just below my ancle. It did not hurt the rest of the day as it was numb, but the next day I could not walk, x-rays were negative though. Well needless to say my coach was none too happy, I had to sit out of basketball practice for two days.

    • I haven’t really filmed in a while. Starting to feel like my body is close to being at full strength again, but I am also 65! I played a few round and my distance is down as expected. Here are a 6 iron and driver swing. My grip is a bit weak in these so I’ve focused on that the last few days. I went over my Erie notes. I’m trying to swing down from the top and not out. I want my weight to start shifting forward at about P3. And I want to push my left hip back in the downswing, which I was not successful in these swings. Ball flight has been pushes or pull draws with the irons and fades with the driver. Looking at these swings I can see why. I just need to change the picture.
    • I flipped the video above but here it is again so you see the flipped version, too.
    • Things can go awry quickly on that hole.
    • I have played that course a lot. Mostly scrambles/outings. I enjoyed the read and could picture each hole and got nervous thinking about number 5. That hole is scary. 200 yard layup off the tee?
    • Even though you didn't score well, take solice in the fact you hit the longest drive of the year! 😏 I enjoy following your rounds and can imagine the scenario.   Thanks for sharing
