I've been working on my short game and it is paying off. On my latest 9 holes I had only 12 putts. I still had two blow up holes on which I carded two snowmen and shot a 50. One lost ball and one in a water hazard will do that, but I still feel like I'm on the verge of a break through. I hit the ball decent (for me). If I could somehow keep from blowing up on those very few holes I would be in the low 90's consistently. I'm definitely trying to get up and down WAY to much! More mid-iron practice is in my future, but I can feel a break though coming!

I had a day like that yesterday. I made some recent swing changes and it did a lot to help my ballstriking. Im now hitting the ball straighter and higher than I ever have.
I also have been working on my chipping and my chipping has been much improved recently.
The only thing holding me back now is my putting. Its not that my putting is bad, Im just missing a lot of putts in the 6'-20' range. They arent missing by much either, many of them are missing by 1/2" or less and the ones that are on the edge of the hole are lipping out instead of dropping.
Im continuing to see progress and at least now Im giving myself a chance for pars and birdies.

I drive my friends nuts because every other week I will tell them that I "figured out what I have been doing wrong" and then go out and score about the same as always. Lately I have been really struggling with my woods, slicing and pushing everything, but my iron play and short game have been taking up the slack so that I'm still getting my normal scores. But I think I figured out what I've been doing wrong on my woods...

Every year there's a point where I feel like I'm on the verge of a breakthru. In the spring I start over playing like I've never played before, and it takes a couple of months to get back to it. After a couple of months of nothing the leap to playing better is sudden. To put the breakthru in context though, I only go from barely being able to play (shooting over 120) to under 110 in a short time. Then winter comes and it goes out the window.

I've pretty much felt like that all year! I just realized today that our prime season is winding down and I'm still looking for the break through. I have improved my short game by leaps and bounds so I guess that's sort of a break through, but I'm still working on the whole "everything coming together" thing...

There was a cool quote that reminded me of this

I get excited then frustrated all the time. You fix one thing, you find another. But thats why i love golf so much!

I had a day like that today. Went out to play 9 holes after work, and started out with a par, then a birdie, then another par. I was on the way to my best round ever, then a couple bad shots led to other bad shots, then a couple horrible chips, and I finished up at a 50 also.......

I thought I was there, but today was not meant to be the day. I'll try again tomorrow, I guess.

Gee, felt that way yesterday. 16 handicapper, me, sitting on the 9th tee one over for the day. Had hit more than half the greens so far, too.

I had about a three or four week stretch last fall/winter when I couldn't miss. Drives long and down the middle, approach shots great, focused on the course, and then we got snow and then it got cold and the course got shut down for about 40 days straight, which is extreme for around here. When I got back out, the swing thoughts and feelings I were gone That's golf though.

Best golf quote ever in A Good Walk Spoiled, by John Feinstein:

"One week you've discovered the secret to the game; the next week you never want to play it again".

For example, the other week I found nearly every fairway and my irons we're on fire (too bad my putter wasn't), but I thought I had it all figured out. Yesterday, couldn't hit either (and my putter was still no where to be found). It was enough to make sick. I can't seem to figure out what I did different last week!

I have that feeling right now. I have been working on my impact position and I know once I get there it will take my game to the next level. I feel like I am almost there with my swing changes!!

Mr. 85.....ha!

I finally broke 100 today and in a big way!! 32 putts which isn't great, but I had several lip outs. I still carded two snowmen on 2 of the par 5's. grrrr 1 birdie, 6 pars, 5 bogeys, 3 double bogeys and 3 triples for a grand total of 91. It could've been much better which is what drives me absolutely insane!! Not bad for a hacker who doesn't carry a driver, or a 3 wood. My 3 triples can be attributed to trouble on the tee shots. I could feel a breakthough coming. I'll probably shoot 120 on Sunday when my son and I play!!

It doesn't matter if you shoot 91 or 71...you will always find reason that it could have been better

You are correct sir. It is quite maddening!

Of course I always think a great game is just around the corner. Otherwise I would probably give up.
