2009 season winding down (for some of us) - was it a good one for you?

This "topic" is basically me sharing some personal golf highlights from the past few days - no tournament wins, no personal bests, just a collection of golf related experiences that have added to a genarally good golf year.

Thursday and Friday I spent some money (3-wood and 2 wedges- a vokey 52* and a wilson prostaff gap, a vintage set including Apex PC irons with Apex 4 shafts - woot!)

Friday afternoon, my daughter (4) and I went to the thrift store and picked out two mint condition junior irons (7 and 9) for a friend's 8 year old daughter. After an hour and a half at a pitch and putt, I can honestly say, this kid is a natural - she sent a sky high 9 iron onto the green and her face lit up.

Saturday - I took my new wedges and a vintage putter to pratice at the pitch and putt - tore the face off some Top Flite Gamerset with my new Vokey (my Mizunos are jealous). Finally birdied the tricky little second hole - twice.

Sunday - went to the lake to stay with friends at their grandparents cabin.

Monday - got up early (my daughter refuses to sleep in), went canoeing, had a nice breakfast, did some gardening when we got home, had something to eat then I went went to a nice local course to hit some balls at ~ 7:15.

The range was empty. I asked the pro if they were still "selling range balls". No - closed for the day ("saving the balls for an APGA tournament in the morning").

He then said, "Just go out a play a couple holes."

"Really?"

"Yeah, you should be able to play 1-4 before dark".

I grabbed my clubs (including the new Hogans, wedges, and 3-wood). Bogey, Par, Birdie, Birdie. On the 404 yard uphill 3rd, I hit 3-wood and had 105 yards in. Vokey to 8 feet. Dropped a couple more - same result.

Can't wait for 2010!!

YES my fellow Canadian, the season is coming to an end for us :(
it has been a pretty decent year for me too
I took all of last year off, due to the birth of my baby girl and picked things up again this year
It had it's up's and down, but I would say more up's

I dropped my index from a double digit 10 or 11 to where I am now (approx. 4-5)
I have had a few rough sessions latelty, but hey thats golf
I put in approx. 35+ rounds, with no membership, so not too bad I would say

I am working on buying a membership for next year, getting the ol index down to a 2 (or better) and maing a run at the SK Men's open (Canadian tour event)

I am making this winter a full boar "training winter" for next year
Joined an indoor league, going to hit the indoor range at least 1-2 times a week and going to putt my a$$ off in the basement - trying to keep the swing warm
As well as working on my absolutely terrible flexibility, to try and gain some distance off the tee

the weather really is holding up for us though, as it was +30º celcius this past weekend
I think we should have at least, another month or better left

to a GREAT 2009 and looking forward to an AWESOME 2010!

I would say it wasnt a sucessful season for me. I didnt really get any better this season, although my swing is mechanically better do to a flatter swing plane i instrumented close to a year ago. I was a better golfer two years ago when i didnt carry a handicap and had now idea what i was doing...

I know there's more to golf than a handicap, but I hope to consistently play as "badly" as you one day.

Been a good season overall. I was improving steadily till a month or so ago when some on going health issuse put a damper on things for a while. We still have a good 2 mos. of good playing time and now that I'm feeling better hope to get my HC down to 20 within that time.

Once I started playing by the rules, I realize that I suck.

Other than that.

A new set of forged clubs.
Changed my swing on my own and have gone from a fade/wicked slice to a draw with a sometime fade thrown in.
Usually able to hit at least one 300 yard drive per 18 with about 270 being the norm. And this is after 5 back surgeries.
Have played more golf this year that the previous 7 combined, am at about 35 rounds since March.

Over the winter will have to work on the short game more.

I think it was, first year golfing since elementary school, was shooting in the 110s at the beggining of the season, shot 4 rounds in a row in the 90s, with a 93 yesterday (42 on the back nine).

5 Wood: Firesole Bubble Shaft3-PW: Burner LCGWedges: Goliath 52* and 56*Putter: Callie Forged

Pretty successful season.

I didn't play well early in the Spring for my golf team, had a stroke average of 42 (we only play nine holes per match). But, during the summer I really worked HARD on my game, play virtually everyday, took some lessons, and got down to about an 8 handicap. I was about a 11 or 12 when June started, so in three months or so I got down 3-4 strokes off my handicap, which I am happy with. My main goal was to get down to a 5, but mostly because of financial reasons, I was unable to play very many ROUNDS of golf because I just couldn't afford it.

Overall, it was a pretty fun year, I look forward to working on my game at an indoor facility the rest of the Winter and really trying to get to the next level and play some good golf for my High School team Spring of 2010, my Senior year.

I started playing by the rules this year - counting penalty strokes, stopped taking mulligans, always putting out, etc. and realized I wasn't as good as I thought I was. I'm now scoring consistently where I thought I was last year (low - mid 90s) It's been a battle with my driver all year, but I'm hitting my irons much better than the beginning of the season, and my chipping and putting has improved dramatically. I also think by disciplining myself to play the bad shots, my course management and thought process has improved.

I'm still feel as though I'm waiting for it all to "come together" but overall I'd say this season (and hopefully a month or two more) has been a success.

I felt better about my game this time last year than I do this year even though I'm scoring 6 shots lower. Still go two more months.

It was a good year, I had one of my best ball striking years ever and shot my lowest score, a 77 and my lowest 9, a 37 and they weren't in the same round. I also drove the ball the best I have ever driven it, driving has always been the most frustrating aspect of my game.

My only regret was playing time, which we probably all wish we could do more, but I would play 7 or 8 times in a 3 week span and then not get to play for 3 weeks. It was hard to get a good routine going and keep my game sharp

Without a doubt this year has been excellent , I have beat my long time golf partner for the last month which has always been my secret goal, I made an eagle , a 35 / 1 under on the front nine of a tough coarse ( we wont talk about the back) I hope to play as much as I can weather permitting, sad to see the summer and golf wind down

Great year for me, I came back to the game after a 7 yr hiatus. I joined the local country club, and my 7 yr old daughter took lessons all summer. I've been averaging about 36 holes per week, with some range time thrown in also. My drives are finding the fairway, my chipping/putting is almost acceptable, I just need to find some accuracy with my mid/long irons. All in all, it's been a very good year, with the foundation being laid for an even better year next year.

I had a pretty good season. I should have a few weeks left. I became very comfortable off the tee compared to previous years. Also my overall ballstriking was at its highest this year. Practiced my short game alot and was very pelased with the results.

I just hit my goal of making a thirty-something on my little par 33 unrated nine hole course this past Saturday. A 39 to be exact, after starting out the season in the 50's. I have been getting around with a consistent 82-84 for eighteen holes in the past few weeks, so I am happy......for this year, ha ha.

Wow, third person from SK to post here.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
