I was approached today in a restaurant by a club member asking me to play in a scramble with him. I've never spoken to the guy, just seen him around the course and around town. I know from the posted handicaps that he's around a 4, as is the rest of the team. He introduced himself, and asked me if I was the guy playing on tuesday, wearing a black shirt. I verified that I was, and he then told me he'd like to have me on the team for my driver and putter. I made sure he knew that my iron play left alot to be desired, and was told not to worry about that, the rest of the team are excellent at the midgame.
I've played in several scrambles with friends, but never been asked to join a team for my golf abilities. It's a boost to my ego, and I always seem to play better when I'm around better golfers, so it should be a fun time.

So what happens if you absolutly suck at driving that day? Just think about, those other 3 guys are going to be counting on you to drive well so every single drive will be a high pressure shot. And the putter too? Ouch.

Good deal. That would be a compliment. I hope someday someone will do the same and ask me to come along for my beverage carrying skills. Hardly ever a drop spilled. :)

No shit, way to get into guys head. Even is being sarcastic

Gimmie a break and stop projecting your own fears on others. I'm not sure grown people need a silly "go get 'em, you're the best!!!" speech. A little taunting is good for a competitor. This isn't pre-school.

No fears, here. I just thought it was a dick thing to do. They guy obviously knows he's is playing with a higher caliber group of players and being counted on for 2 things. I am sure he's already stressing about the point, no need to reinforce it, that's all

It is great when you get noticed like that. Go out there and play like you always do...you will be fine!

No worries guys, I'm not the type to stress about anything, especially a little razzing on an internet board.
Given the level these guys play at, I'm pretty sure they're not counting on me to carry the team by any means. I'll be happy if we can use a few of my shots here and there.

Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say. Played a great game...all of you. Great game. I guess we just can't expect to win ‘em all. I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years. None of you ever knew George Gipp. It was long before your time, but you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame, and the last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said, "sometime, when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said, "but I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

Good, you have the right attitude to succeed at competition then. Unfortunately, some others here apparently don't and are easily set off by little things that any person not scared of their abilities would find more gamey than anything. It's sad so many still need encouragements from their fathers and hugs from their mothers to feel confident. Sad, sad people. Good luck!

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
