I have recently been looking at getting new irons. I hate the huge head, sole, topline and offset of my current Slingshots. The offset causes can sometimes cause some nasty hooks and I launch the Slingshots waay too high (I think). I am looking for a smaller club head and less offset. I have already hit the Ping i10s and really liked them, but I have recently heard some bad things about them. Any opinions on the i10s or what other irons should I try out?

P.S. I didn't really keep a handicap this past season, but I usually shot between mid high 80s and mid low 90s. I play about five times a week and am going to play even more this season.

Thanks

I would try some type of Mizuno GI or a Taylormade Iron. Specific models may vary based on how offset/large you want to iron so it will be hard for me to tell you exactly each one, TM will probably have the best selection on what you are looking for. That or Callaway.

9.5º TaylorMade R9 TP VooDoo XNV6 | TaylorMade R9 TP 13º 3W & 19º 5W Both with Fujikura Motore F1 85 | Mizuno MP-57 DG X-100 (3-PW) | Titleist Vokey 52º, 56º, 60º | 34'' Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 | The Cardinal Club [73.9/135]

What bad things have you heard about ping i10's? I think they are great irons, they hold their value better than most too. Others you could try are the Nike VR split cavity, they are sweet irons, I've been playing them for a year now. Also, the new TM R9 irons look pretty cool too.

Lots of good deals this time of year I think... not sure if they still have left, but I just bought a set of 4-PW Nike Slingshot 4D graphite (women's) for under $200 new at Sports Chalet. The steel ones were the same price.

I recently got a set of Callaway X20 Tours from Callaway Preowned in "like new" (brand new) condition. I was in a similar boat as you having hit GI irons (Big Berthas) for years. I wanted something I could take more control over, but was worried about getting a club that was too hard to hit. I find the X20 Tours offer me what I wanted. I can feel much more in the shot and can aim more precisely. At the same time, they are not hard to hit at all. In fact, I am making better contact to my surprise. I read here the other day that Carl's Golf Land (website) has the X22 (I think) on sale for $399. Maybe it was the X20's, not sure. At any rate, there are some deals out there for sure. Shop around.

Here is the link I saw the other day. It was in fact X20's on sale at Carl's. Great deal...

It's too bad so many new irons have stock grips that make them feel like garbage.

Give some of the recent TaylorMade cavity backs a try. Many of their game improvement irons are very easy to hit... Even a nicer club like the r7 TP could be a good fit for growth.

Go Go Nike VR split cavities!!!!

allow you to work the ball and gives you forgiveness. I would definitely go to a pro shop and see if you can hit some of those.

Sam,

X20 Tours have what you want, if you have time to work on your game a little. X22 Tours also good, but they won't get the ball up quite as well as the X20Ts (may be OK bec. you have too high ball now.) The launch monitor can help you decide. Titleist AP1 (earlier model) worth a try also.

Focus, connect and follow through!

What bad things about i10's have you heard? I have a set and like them. Although I am selling them for some new i15's at the momeny.

Besides if you like them what difference does it make?

Thanks for the responses everyone. I went to the range on Sunday and hit the 2008 AP1s and absolutely loved them. I ordered them yesterday morning so they should be here by Friday . I guess I was misleading on my original post. I read on multiple forums that the Ping i10s were not as forgiving as I believed. Its not "bad", they're just not for me(yet). Thanks again

that's awesome. i hit the ap1 and absolutely loved them but i was looking for some more workability and a shaft that would keep the ball lower. i found that in the 08 ap2 and than in the 710 ap2.

Good to hear. I actually had a set of the AP1's that I traded for the i10's. AP1's are without a doubt more forgiving then the i10's.

What the heck have you heard!!! The i10's are great irons. I've played a few tournaments with them in my bag and have walked away with wins. They are great clubs, last a long time, and have the greatest combination of workability and forgiveness. If you like them, go ahead and play a few holes with demo clubs and see what happens. You never know, your shit club may be my greatest club. It just all depends on the person, don't be influenced by others, especially if they don't have the on field experience with the afore mentioned equipment...or any equipment for that matter.
