That's a major flaw that about 99% of beginners have. They point their feet at their target. I did it for a while. I actually stand open, and hit the ball with a slight inside-out push. I keep daily video records of my swing, and I often come way too much from the inside, resulting in a snap hook, which is my major miss. I also don't cast the club, when you look at slow motion video, my club is at a 90° angle at waist high. My point is that people often see my slower "sweep" release, and assume that I'm casting, or see that my ball goes right, and assume I came over the top. It annoys me, because these same people usually are have never once seen their swing on film, who proceed to "show me" the correct way, with their own terrible and flawed swing.

I haven't seen your swing so I cannot comment. It just seemed that you were explaining that a forward leaning shaft at impact is proof that you did not cast or come over the top. Simply not the case.

Are there similarities between sweep vs snap and hit vs swing? Thinking about the way TGM uses those terms.

Zuback vs Sadlowski. Zuback is accelerating the club through the entire downswing, Sadlowski retains the power through lag and unleash it before impact. Zuback use muscles, hitting the ball. Sadlowski use speed, swinging at the ball.

I could have sworn I posted that comparison somewhere on this forum, but yeah, Zuback uses the huge strength that he has, while Sandlowski uses his crazy long swing to load up on lag, sort of how Sergio does it.

Nice pics, btw.

Um. What am I? Snap or sweep? I don't know what stats you guys need, So i'll just post any stats I feel are relevant because I can't post videos.

X stiff shaft
Lot's of lag.
Close to a 110 degree angle
Fast tempo
Big divots
High ball flight(REALLY high. But flat)
Lots of spin
I hold my wrist angle for a good while. Longer than most of my friends do.

I think I'm a snap release? Not sure? Opinions?

You can't tell by just listing some stats and saying what you feel you do. It's about whether you use your big muscles to slowly accelerate the club (like I do) or use your wrists to snap the club at the bottom of the swing (like Sergio Garcia does). You can use an L flex or an X flex with either option, that's based more on swing speed.

Thanks for the reply. I think you've told me what I am. I use my muscles to accelerate the club.

Not really, you could still either be both. It's all about how and where you generate the speed. Sweep releasers start the release early and accelerate through the whole swing, while snap releasers release late, and whip the club through impact.

I'm a snap releaser then. I have a video of my swing on my phone(can't send it), and it fits what you said a snapper does

Thought I was a sweep lag guy - not sure. Either way, I don't use wrist cock to get the club parallel to the ground - the ball still gets out there onto the playing field though.

I never put all of this together until i read the first few posts from this thread. My instructor teaches that sort of sweeping motion through the ball like Zuback has. He thinks you use more big muscles that way and its an easy motion for rec players to learn. Im more of a snapper..but my instructor calls it "flash action"

It's not the lag angle that counts, it's how much shaft flex you have coming into impact that determines acceleration hence velocity. Sergio's wrist angle is not an end in itself, he does that to flex the shaft as long as possible into impact or even beyond. You can train yourself to maximize shaft flex by throwing a club at a target without a ball, by getting that SonicGolf widget used by VJ that generates a tone based on velocity, or by getting the Orange Whip trainer or just a club with a very soft shaft. While playing, sense the shaft flex by feeling the 'lag pressure' against the knuckle of your right index finger. Shaft flex = acceleration = compression = straighter shots.

What does shaft flex have to do with accuracy?

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
