Because I make a part of my living producing TV commercials and representing pro athletes - and this leaves a bad taste. It's just not the right way to promote .... there is no positive message for the product ... I see it as Nike taking advantage of their "property" (Tiger) and if one of my clients were in that situation I would not allow it - no matter what the price tag. It's just in poor taste, in my opinion anyway .....

I think you got out of it what you wanted to get out of it, and your bias made you miss the point. Based on your comments, I've got a feeling that it didn't leave you with the same impression it left me. Specifically, Earl saying he wanted to find out what he was thinking, and if he learned anything immediately made me think about how both of my parents have said the same things to me in the past. To take it a step further, they'd be even more embarrassed if I didn't come back and try harder to do things well and do them the right way. I'm not saying that's the message they were trying to convey, that's purely speculative. I'm just trying to show you that I got something completely different out of it than what you did, and I think that what people will get out of it will be largely based on their past opinions of Tiger and Nike.

Leave it to Nike to try to capitalize on the situation. Kind of what I've come to expect from them.

Dude, their athlete's return is going to be one of the biggest sports events of the year. If you think ANY company, whether it be TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Reebok, Under Armour, etc., wouldn't run ads in conjunction with a return like this one, you're quite simply fooling yourself. Of course, like I said above, if you had a negative opinion of Nike or Tiger before, then you're mind was made up about the commercial before you even saw it.

actually, i found it quite touching. it's not meant to promote anything. it's meant to make you take a look in the mirror.

Have you seen this? I have worked in TV and marketing for 30+ years and I have never seen a TV commercial that was in as poor taste as this one!! I have contacted Nike and expressed my disgust. I was just compelled to do so.

What do you think you are going to get from calling Nike? It wasn't a great commercial, but Tiger was clearly taking part it in, and clearly on board with it. So what if it isn't riveting Television.

I like it.

It speaks to the depth of the relationship between Earl and Tiger. Both men were/are flawed, but you can stil ltake something away from your flaws if you really want to.

I just think it shows how much of an influence Earl had in Tiger's life and how he is saying everyone has their faults & now it is time to move on and fullfill the dream of being the greatest golfer that ever walked the planet......I found it rather moving, because like Tiger, my father played an integral role in my golfing success....I will never forget winning the Arkansas 3-AAA state tournament and my dad greeting me off the 18th green......

other than the fact that they are still dwelling on all the personal stuff that went on in recent months, I don't really see ANYTHING wrong with that commercial...I don't see why it's in "poor taste" ...it's just a commercial.... Let the dude play golf and let him & his family worry about the personal issues

I've avoided it to this point. Nothing against Tiger or swoosh fans in general, it's just that whenever I see a celebrity speaking directly to the camera - in B&W; no less - I switch stations.

Its ok, though in reality if Tigers father were still alive I doubt he would have such kind and understanding words for Tiger, at least not at first. Probably a lot of 4 letter ones berating Tiger and telling him how foolish and selfish his behavior was and how it hurt his family. Probably would have stressed honor and respect and honesty as well and what it takes to be a man. I hope Tiger gets it now but what his does outside of golf really doesnt matter to me so long as he doesnt actually break the law and I think thats how most people feel at this point. Play golf and move on.

Sure, but Tiger doesn't speak, let alone directly to anything, in that video.

"Tiger's return to golf..."

What a bunch of BS. He took a few months off from playing tournaments. A few months that several golfers take off anyway. Come on, it's not like he got hit by 10 ton bus or anything! He got caught in a bunch of lies. This is less of a "return to golf" than I make every April.

What does "Tiger's return" mean? NOTHING! He didn't go anywhere! He missed what, maybe 3 or 4 tournaments that he would have played to start off the year? Instead of playing in tournaments, he was practicing. Not much different than what Hogan did in 53'. Give me a break!

The golf break was not that long, but the way he's spent these months has not exactly been ordinary. Has the world of golf ever seen a similar event take place around a golfer than Tiger the last months?

From Joe Posnanski, Sports Illustrated:

"And, finally, that was my reaction to this sad commercial. Forget all the other stuff for a moment — the strangeness of it, the muddled message, the odd look on Tiger's face. Tiger Woods created a world-wide circus with his out-of-control life. No matter how you may feel about the right and wrong, he created enough of a scandal that he walked away from golf, went into rehab, lost sponsors, and came back talking about all the horrible things he did. Would Earl Woods's response to all that REALLY be to, in that detached voice, say that he just wants to be inquisitive to promote discussion? Would he really just want to know what Tiger was thinking?

Or is this just a slick Nike-sponsored rationalization using a dead voice and a swoosh?"

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
