Wanted to wrap up the trip I had with a the things that worked.

1. Just open up the hips on the backswing, and be mindful about how long the swing gets. This produced the best success for me. When I did this I would hit very good shots. My driver was back in play the entire week.

2. I still need to occasionally tell myself to get the right side turning through better. I can push an iron about 10 yards right from time to time if I don't.

My best results came from just a simple swing thought of open the hips (right hip back) to start the swing and let it rip.

I shot pretty mediocre averaging near the 50% GIR, and I had maybe 2 tee shot penalties all week. The tee ball was pretty much between the ropes or better. I feel confident that this will improve the more I play.

No I just need to get over my achilles heel that is my short game.

Good thing that's easy to fix compared to the long game. Glad to see you're getting your game back.

Shot an 8 over 44.

4 GIR, 7 out of 8 good drives, 1 out of 6 scrambling, 20 putts

I only had one extra short game shot. Putting is killing me. I didn't feel comfortable at all over a putt. I constantly felt misaligned.

I wanted to add this.

My pitching was substantially better. I kept the ball on the green 6 out of 8 pitching type shots, not necessarily short game shots.

My main focus was just finish with my chest turning towards the target. I stopped caring about contact and just focused on pivoting and it helped with contact a ton.

My swing thought for my backswing, just focusing on turning my hips only, worked out great for me still.

I'm struggling practicing my putting. I will hit a few putts solid in the center of the putter then I'll just keep heeling putts. It's strange how my putting degrades after a few putts. I just can't seem to stop the putter from flying inward on the putting stroke. If I try to not do that then the putter face feels way too closed going back.

Played much better tonight. Shot a 4 over 39.

Mum uber confident with my driver and irons right now. Though I had only 4 GIR, I had 4 nGIR.

I had 17 putts with one three putt.

i had two three putts holes if you include a putt from the fringe.

Should have been better. The long game feels solid.

I've been working on my putting. I am doing better now. I started to stand farther away from the ball and that seems to have helped out. I was working through the recent drill by Erik and Dave (see below)

That's a good drill.

You can go a step farther, Matt, too and figure out what you're lacking and work on that. Is it Bead? Speed? Probably Bead. So focus JUST on that. Make it as SMALL a problem so you can solve it as possible.

Also…

Spoiler

I was putting really well that day. Even my "miss" from eight feet was intentional, hence the exaggerated "awwww, man" gesture." And yeah, I poured those two 20-footers in to start. After I made the first 12-footer, I remember trying to miss just left and just right, too, to show a "balance." :-) It was a good day to film that video.

Around that time Dave and I had an 18 hole match where I made 8 of my 15-30 foot putts and beat him by three. We played nine more holes and were tied, so we played sudden death after that. Also 20-35 footers. I made five more, including the first hole. So over 28 holes, I made 13 of my putts from an average distance of about 25-30 feet. That's 46%, or roughly the make percentage of a PGA Tour player from nine feet… :-)

It was a good putting stretch. And by that I mean a somewhat freakishly lucky one combined with some good putting.

Shot a 2 over 37

6 GIR, 2 nGIR, 18 Putts (I count 2 putts from the fringe)

I was tipping my head back on a few shot and hitting some slightly thin irons and a couple heel drives. It was kinda a shitty hitting 2 over.

When I decided to swing easier on my last drive I stripped it. My last few irons were much more solid focusing on impact and staying over the ball better.

Played 9 holes this evening.

Driver: Hitting pull cuts. Kept the ball in play, but maybe 2 drives felt solid. Most of them started 20 yards left and curved 10-15 yards right.
Irons: Where mostly were about 2 grooves to thing. Most turned out OK. A few iron shots were really pure. Kinda a mixed bag. One really bad shot was this low push cut PW. Just a strange shot really.
Short Game: Not sharp, but not horrible. I gave myself a lot of looks inside of 10 ft
Putting: Left everything short of the hole. I had a lot of putts online.

A few shots felt flippy with the club. I think i was goat humping a bit on a few shots. I struggled not letting the handle of the club get pulled inside too much.

When my driver miss is either a slight cut shot that stays in play I'll take it. Shots are not flying off the map on me.

I need to get back to not overswinging and to doing that downswing piece better. I like the feel of starting my swing with my right hip and keeping the arms passive.

Some thoughts on my putting.

1. I struggle to line up me feet and body square to the target line. Square looks really closed.

2. When I do line up square I want to put the ball near my front toe. Probably linked to putting with an open stance.

3. 75% of my putts outside 10 ft come up short. I hit short putts too hard.

4. I struggle with putts where the ball is below my feet. I feel my balance is way out on my toes.

5. I'll have a tendency to hit a lot of putts low on the putter face.

5 is because the ball's too far forward.

4. Lean back into your heels.

3 is fine so long as they're not WAY short. Speed up the backswing.

2 and 1 you've got a handle on.

Generally, should the ball position be just slightly forward of center?

Speeding up the backstroke has helped out a ton on my distance control. I think the longest 2nd putt I had all day was 2 ft. I put some really long (40+ ft) putts inside a foot from the hole.

Swing is getting too long with the fairway woods, hybrid and driver. I started hitting some pretty big cut shots. I find it hard to reconcile turning and lifting the handle to keep the path more outward. Of course if the swing is too long that makes it near impossible because the swing gets too steep for me in the downswing.

I might have to work on this more in shorter slower swings to get the feel for it.

I need to get back to the basics. Shorter swing and better downswing turn. It's easier for me to do with the irons than it is for the longer clubs.

What has helped a lot in curbing the amount of cut is making sure that i am lining up correctly. I have a nasty habit of aiming the clubface right of target and aiming by body way left of target. Right now, aiming parallel feels like I am closed. Also I am trying not to let the ball sneak too forward in my stance. When I did this for my irons I hit good straight shot or slight push draw though it kinda felt that I should hook the ball.

I like that I hit 50% GIR and 50% FIR with not my A-game swing. I feel like i'm about to drain a lot of putts here soon.

Hit a medium bucket at the range. Just focusing on contact and keeping the swing length good.

Hit a lot of good shots.

My distance wedges are suspect still. Even when I don't feel like I'm dipping down about 1 out of 4 is this one where the club just glides under the ball and it goes half the distance I want it to.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
