I know driving distance isnt everything, but it helps hitting a shorter club into a green than trying to hit a long iron or hybrid on a longer par 4, especially for a higher handicapper like me. Im not likely to hit the green or even get close with a longer club but put me 50 yards closer and give me an 8 iron and ive got a chance to hit that green and walk away with a par instead of struggling just to make a bogey.

Distance is huge for me. I don't have much accuracy off the tea, but my misses are either pulls or pushes, so i don't loose much distance. but it helps when you can have wedge, half wedge shots, 9,8 irons into greens, rather than 4,5,6 irons.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

My driving has improved a lot lately. I can now consistently count on around or slightly father than 220 yards with my driver, and once or twice a round getting out to 250. The other nice thing is my recently-added 3W has been gold. It's always 210 or so, and usually very straight. Got a nice bounce on a dry left rough today and had about 75 yards in to a 300 yard hole with the 3W. It's been really nice to have a fall-back club without giving up the distance I lost going down to my 5W.

Ditto Zeg......I was driving 195-210 with a Cobra L5V.......but now I use the Powerbilt Air Force One Nitrogen charged driver. I am getting 205 - 251yds, averaging around 215-220. Makes a big difference for your second shot.

  • 4 weeks later...
Had another cracker, in unusual circumstances. 18th hole on the West course at La Manga. Tee is about a mile or so above the fairway (OK - maybe 150 yards - it is a long way up, whatever the accurate measurement). I checked the GPS in the buggy, which said that a bunker on the left of the fairway was 275 metres away (say - 305). So no bother - that was the line I wanted. Swing smooth, land, run into the middle of the fairway.

The ball LANDED alongside the bunker....

Lovely!

Do I suggest this is normal? - heck, no; the elevation was the determining factor. Fun, though!

I was using a Cobra S2 that my wife bought me for Christmas, 10.5 loft and R shaft, if anyon'e particularly interested...

why did you revive this thread?

Why would people need to argue about driving distance? We all play with guys who we can outdrive every single time and with other guys who are always a touch longer (or even waaaaay longer) and yet we seem to get along on the course anyway. Why does the interweb change things?

There are people playing in dry air with wet fairways, himid air with hard fairways, at altitude with downhill rock hard fairways and at sea level with shaggy fairways and everything in between. Driving distance is perhaps a macho thing, but if you want to feel like a hero, go play a round at Banff on a hot humid day - if feels like that mutha is gonna carry a mountain!!

My average distance is about 315 , max 380 and min you don`t want to know, i began to play golf 7 months ago , 22 hc, im improving a little still make some bad mistakes but learning , i used to play baseball and softball so my hips are fast trained jejej i hit the 60" wedge 130 yds. Trust me distance is not that important , it`s better to hit the ball straight.

Testing showed the Ping G-15 had the best forgiveness I believe. It's a great driver I'm told, even if you don't need it.

Yes you might be right , went to play yesterday and average was around 280 :S, hit a few 260 and a few 320 and one 340 wth some wind for help and a also hit one like 240 jejeje. I think tour players can hit it further they just don´t try to swing to hard , the Long distance guys like Jason Zuback can hit 450 yds.
Professional long drivers can average over 350 yards (320 m) in competition, compared with 300 yard (274 m) averages from the top PGA Tour drivers WIKIPEDIA.

I will trade any day distance for accuracy i hate Ob´s. So the Ping G15 will be Shanks a Million, thanks , but what shaft type should i buy ?
