Yep.  I've had those rear their ugly head too.  It's when I lean into the ball on the back swing...  Have you caught any of these on video?  Like this? The very first swing my head leans into the ball and hit a dead shank with an 8i.

Yo dawg, I heard you like golf swings. So I put my golf swing in your golf swing thread so you can think about my golf swing while you swing your golf swing!

:-$

Looks like your posture has got more upright? I'm moving that way too -- perhaps a clue ...

Lol, that's an old swing. But yes. My posture was too upright in that swing.

Why is the club head so far inside? Because the rates are off. There is too much tilt (mainly) relative to rotation, as shown by the excessive pitch of the shoulders. Note left shoulder position relative to point of chin. Why are the rates so far off? Because the right knee is losing flex too quickly (from the caddy view you can see it "popping" straighter between P1 and P2) and the right hip, as a result, is moving back (away from the ball) too soon .

Conclusion: This mullet is one of the few players who can legitimately be advised to "keep the flex" or "turn against a more braced right side", as much as it may pain him to admit it.

Corollary, with the benefit of hindsight: "Shoulder down, hands in" was not a great initial (self) instruction set for said chucklehead.

Stretch, A2 and A6 are odd positions because their timing is too dependent on how quickly you cock or uncock the wrists. You could be at A2.5 here if you'd done nothing but cocked the wrists more quickly.

I feel like you know this, but you're forgetting it and making things far more complicated than they need to be right now. You should cock your wrists more, and resist the twisting of the left arm a little too. That's it.

Erik, I rarely disagree with you, for the simple reason that you're generally right. :-)

But here I do. Yes, #2 is clearly a big part of the problem, but the sequence of errors starts from the ground up. And I've wasted a lot of time worrying about early forearm roll when a hard look really suggests to me that it's really not the key issue I thought it was. I've marked the right thumb Vs and insides of the left elbows here a frame or two before P2. The big difference, to me, is the hand path not the wrist/arm orientation. Maybe I'm missing something due to parallax effect, given the hands are obviously in different positions relative to the camera? Either way, I've obviously got a lot of shit to fix and I've been very lazy about getting to grips with it for the last six months or so. Will be more active in here going forward.

I am here too ;-) , but I'm not going to make a big case for it.

Well, A) You don't know what the relative grip strength is, and B) You don't know where those are pointing with any real accuracy (arrows on an image are hardly very representative of 3D space). What do I see? Your club is toe up, Grant's is not. And forearm rotation is the second thing I listed, anyway: cock the club up faster or be content to have a semi-Ray-Floyd-like takeaway. You probably won't be given that you've struggled with the ascent of the clubhead and hands, though, and I wouldn't recommend it for you.

I disagree that your knees have lost flex too fast. Are your hips unusually far turned by this point in the backswing? No. Not for A2.5.

BTW, hitting A2 sooner will change the perceived rates of rotation of the clubface as well.

Will be more active in here going forward.

Good. Cock the club faster. :-) Get more ascent with the hands and clubhead sooner. You'll hit A2 sooner (instead of hitting it at what should be A2.5 due to the slow loading of #2), and things will look much cleaner.

The other things you mention are likely issues, but IMO this is first.

Stuff like this is why this site is the best site EVAR.

I'll second that. Best site EVAR! Or at least the best non-porn site. :-)

Yeah, agree with Erik here regarding PA#2, gotta put wrinkles in that left wrist.  I think you'll like the way the pic looks if you cock it more.  Couple feels, from A1-2, feel like you "push" the butt of the club down using PP#1.  Feel like the butt of the club stays the same height from 1-2.  It doesn't have to stay at the same height, but could be a good visual to help.

And do the Kuchar drill ;-)

Oh, you guys are totally in it together! :-D

Some more pictures from today. Practice swing left, real swing right. Sadly.

In other words… we was right! :-D

(Seriously now… Practice swings look good. Keep it up. You know as well as anyone that if the practice swing was that easy to turn into a real swing we'd all be +2s by now, but that ain't how it works.)

Depends if you prefer cause or effect, I suppose. ;-)

Happy to target either in the quest for a half-decent result!

I've found myself saying this to a lot of people lately, especially those with some S&T; background: the primary function of the right elbow and the wrists is ascent - your body's pivot (turning) will get all the depth you need .

You can do a two-stage swing (as a demonstration to yourself):

  1. Literally do nothing with your arms and make your backswing pivot. Notice how deep your hands get.
  2. Fold your right elbow, cock your wrists. Bam, nice A4.

Too many people try to "gain depth" what I'd call "manually" or "force depth" by doing all sorts of things, and then they're so deep they either have crappy contact or they have to come out over it a little bit to clean up contact, then they hit pull-draws, pulls, and weak cuts.

Generally speaking, Stretch - not at you in particular.

That was the first thing Erik showed me at my lesson. ;) Still something I am fighting, 15 years of artificial depth, and a good backswing feels so strange, just keep plugging along,

  • 3 months later...

Haven't posted for a while as not a whole lot has changed for a while. Grip has got a bit stronger, I'm hitting the ball a bit higher and -- on occasion -- really solid.

Anyway, I broke 70 for the first time today, after shooting the number three times before. Four birdies and no bogies, dancing bananas for everyone!

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Was coming down the last at three under par absolutely nipping myself for the final wedge shot over water to a front pin, and I hit it to six inches for a bonus kick-in birdie. More bananas!
