grasshopper is correct...the USA is 3.8 M sq miles, Japan is 150,000 sq mi (about 2X the size of Florida) with a very concentrated population center. Technology or some conspiracy isn't the problem, building the infrastucture to economically service such a huge geographic territory is expensive. Same as cars, ethanol, LPG, electric...the problem is not technology it's distribution. You can't make money selling electric cars if there is no re charging stations and no one has the money to put 100,000 distribution points.

Yes the cost is what is holding us back. And no, AT&T; does not have 4G up and running yet. Sprint wants to tell you they do, but it's not actually a 4G technology. Yet, they still advertise it as 4G. AT&T; is working on it, but don't expect full 4G from them or Verizon for a few years. Hell, they don't even have 3G everywhere yet.

Another thing, I read somewhere that when real 4G comes out, it will be universal among the different providers. Not sure where I read it but does anybody know of that? Currently AT&T; and T-Mobile use a GSM network while Verizon, Sprint, MetroPCS, and US Cellular use a CDMA network.

Nobody in the world has a 4G network as per definition of 1Gb/s for stationary reception and 100Mb/s for mobile reception -- if you're talking about an IMT Advanced cellular system -- and no one will have it for a while. Even then, in the real world, those speeds won't be achieved until even later. There are two interim systems being used/developed (which are being called 4G): WiMAX (Sprint) and LTE (Verizon and AT&T;). Each of these are going to serve as the foundation for eventually building to a full 4G network. Anyways, only Sprint has something available now to try out (the HTC Evo), while the others are still in testing stages in various cities.

It's looking like the potential for golf related apps is getting better with the new iPhone. With the higher resolution screen and camera, it's getting better as a swing recorder. Still 30 fps - will it reach the fps of the Casio in the future? If it did ~100fps, I'd have second thoughts on buying the high fps Casio and you can edit your movies right on the iPhone.

I can imagine someone figuring out some way to attach it to your body and using the accelerometer and gyroscope to track swing faults.

Yeah I wonder if it is a hardware of software limitation stopping it from having half the quality but twice the frame rate? That would get it to the ballpark for swing recording.

Since you're required to post 3 times before you can start your own thread I thought I would make my first one here. So hello everyone. I think that LTE will be the winner when this is all said and done. Verizon just makes up too much of the market and the Iphone drives ATT. I can't see anything else competing.

Just think of what would happen to AT&T; if iPhone left them. There is a decent chance they would just go down the tube totally.

And on that glorious day I will neck six beers and dance on their grave in my soft spikes yelling hallelujah. Pricks.

The iPhone 4 is being sold unlocked almost everywhere else now, including the UK. A friend is picking me one up in London next week and then I can use it with whatever (GSM) carrier I damn well please anywhere in the world.

As much as I like iPhone, I hate AT&T.; They have one of the worst dropped calls/coverages around. I still like Verizon coverage the best. And I tried T-Mobile, Sprint, (old) Nextel, AT&T; and Verizon.

If a laser pointer could be inserted into the dock connector I wonder if someone could make an interesting golf app?

I guess Apple is trying to take that into their own hands:

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-bud...d=bb-budgeting And to think AT&T; used to advertise that they had the fewest dropped calls....

Don't know if anyone here watches Cranky Geeks (John Dvorak), but one of his guests mentioned something about the health/safety of bare skin on the wrap around antenna. Sounded a little far fetched to me, but now I'm wondering.

No, I have AT&T; because I just got on my parent's plan for $10 a month. And now we have so many rollover minutes accumulated there is not point to change.

Cell phone antennas emit radiation. All do. This new iPhone one more than most, but on par with Blackberry and other smart phones and within legal limits. I highly doubt that if there was a common problem with the antenna injuring bare skin Apple would have let it go to market.

Everything emits radiation. You're getting a nice big dose of it right now unless you printed this page. Actually, if you're using a light to read this by on a printed page, then you're still getting it. Of course, even if you're not using an electric light, you're still getting it, because the biggest source of radiation we all get is from the sun. Cell phone antennas are just another device that emits it.

Like people have said above, we are surrounded by a sea of electromagnetic radiation. Look at all the radio stations and TV stations in your area. How do you think you can get the reception in your area? Some people like John Dvorak are alarmists or as a media personnel, they have to find something to attract attention to themselves.

Since the iPhone is within the legal safety limit is similar to many other phones, if I were to raise the radiation issue, I wouldn't single out the iPhone. I think Dvorak is trying to catch fame by riding on iPhone's media frenzy wave.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
