So I was at the range yesterday practing my irons. I had the 6 iron out and was actually hitting some nice shots.

After striking the ball, which felt like it hit nice and clean, the head of my 6 iron went flying.

Has this ever happened to any of you?

Like I said, I felt like I hit it clean and yet it still happened. I am a newbie so I do occasionally hit the mat before hitting the tee.

Was this just a freak thing possibly? Or could it of been a technique issue?

I just ordered 2-9 Adams Tight Lies GT Irons off EBay. They'll be here tomorrow. Hopefully I wont run into this problem with these.

The 6 Iron I broke was a Spaulding Ascent 2 Graphite iron that I got for free from a friend who upgraded his irons. I'm not sure how old exactly they are, but I am assuming a few years?

I also broke the 3 Iron from that set just by slightly leaning on it in between shots at the range. Because of that I am kind of leaning towards that it happened just because they aren't the best and because they are old.

When I was younger the head of my 3W came off on the 17th hole. It was right by the club house balcony and a whole group of people saw it happen. The club head went further than the ball, which made it even worse.

I've only had one head fly, because a graphite shaft broke on a shot. The graphite shafts were about 6 years old at the time, so they had some abuse on them, and I guess just gave up. The clubhead flew further than the ball as well.

I actually had a 4 iron shaft break a couple of weeks ago during a round. I hit a stray drive on a par 5 that fed off the fairway into an area where the grass was not growing well aka dirtpan. I took my practice swings and everything felt fine. I addressed the ball, swung, and felt a bad sting in my hand. The shaft broke really close to the bottom of my grip and actually flew up and cut my arm. When I looked at what happened, my ball was sitting right behind a tree root that you couldn't see because it was slightly buried in the dirtpan. I guess once I hit the ball (it actually flew the direction I wanted it to minus some distance) the iron came down and buried into the root. It felt like it sprained my wrist. That was the first time I had ever broken an iron.

Lol, defiantly not a swing flaw. Just go to your local golf shop and get it repaired. PGA Superstore works.

minus the fact you hurt self that actually a funny story lol. That was the odd thing about my shot. I hit it perfectly. The only reason I even knew the club went flying was because all of a sudden the weight of club was cut in half lol. I still have no idea where the head went because I didn't have my glasses on. My friend said further than the ball but I dont trust him lol

I had the head come off my 7 iron last fall. It was on the first hole of a tournament. It was muddy and it was a 3/4 shot. The head just flew off. It was my one year old AP-2 with project X shaft. It looked like the shaft was thin or rusty. Titlest replaced it, no questions asked. Same head, new shaft and grip.

I also had the shaft break on a Cleveland driver. But that was my fault, I threw it toward the cart and it hit the ball washer. I told the Pro what had happened and Cleveland repaired it anyway. No charge, new shaft and grip.

and it was a few years old.

Twice. Once on the course once on the driving range. both times the club head went further then the ball. you get what you pay for when you go to a thrift store... it made a sound like two swords grinding together.

I had the shaft on my 8 iron just snap right in half... But... that wasn't an accident.. lol

A friend of mine broke his Taylormade driver at the range. I don't remember which model it was. He was throwing balls up in the air and hitting them with his driver like a baseball bat. He must have hit the shaft on one of them, because it made a noticeable *crack*. He held up his driver, and the club head and 1/4 of the shaft stayed there for a second before it fell over. It was still attached by a thread of graphite though, so it just kind of dangled off the end of the shaft like a wind chime.

$300 gone. Lesson learned.

My friend broke his 3 iron by hitting 2 balls at once in a line at the raneg. They had to make an announcement for everyone to stop so he could run (100 yards) and go get it. hahaha. It does happen though. I think it may mess the ball gathering machine up if you leave it there.
Upon landing at my new home in Honolulu I went to go play 9 holes and on the backswing my 4 iron shaft broke. (my old clubs - graphite shafts) I think it got damaged on the flight over and just snapped. That was some follow through. Good thing I didnt pull a frigging muscle. It coulda been bad. Almost landed on my friend 20 yards to my left too.
