I pretty much always play with guys who are a higher handicaps than me and I also never consider myself playing against them either. High handicappers go out to enjoy the game and the time away from their real lives...thats what golf was created for....

Same here - I don't really care about your handicap. Just respect the general etiquette rules, etc. and make it a fun day.

The only time I mind playing with high handicaps is when they believe that they're much better than they are. These guys are usually the shouters, club throwers, etc. because they can't believe they duffed 'that shot'. Their actions are embarrassing for them and it ruins the atmosphere for the entire group. Why keep playing golf if it makes you so angry?

I gotta be honest, it can bother me some. The biggest issue is with how many times they hit it into the woods, high grass, or any other place that is going to require looking for the ball. It just wears on me after a while. We may still achieve the "normal" pace of play of 4:15-4:30, but I don't consider that normal. It should be under 4 hours, IMO. I don't blame them; they are trying their best, but it can affect me. It's my problem, I know. I don't care that much about etiquette as long as they are not tearing up the course. I don't really care if you walk in my line, putt out of turn, or talk to your buddy while I'm hitting -- although I don't do any of those things.

I don't like playing with hackers.

If they can get around the course in under 100 shots, i'm ok with that. I find it hard to concentrate when I'm helping people look for their golf balls in the long grass half the time

I don't understand with peoples obsession with playing fast. Its golf, people will have a few bad holes, they wont play them in 15 minutes. Just chill, enjoy the day, relax, talk with someone else, reflect on life. Geeze, i am tired of people bitchnig about playing slowly.

I enjoyed a round of golf played in sub 4 hours, and a round of golf played in 6 hours.

as long as the etiquette is in order...I don't particularly mind. One thing that bothers me and does effect my game is someone who outwardly and continually (and usually increasingly) displays frustration. Throws clubs...overhand axe chops their club into the ground etc...don't care if it's a higher or lower hcap than me. That sucks and effects me mentally. But I'm working on blocking that out.

Its not so much a rush to finish, but a moderate pace is good for rhythm and then i play better. Starting and stopping, or having to wait too long for other players eventually wears me down and i loose interest in the round.

I used to have to play with 5 hc because of my job and if he didn't play well would make comments about having to play with someone not as good as he was.

That is an EPIC douche bag move right there, blaming a higher capper for his shitty round based on his playing partners HC alone, and actually saying it out loud. Talk about passing the buck.

6 hours???

How can you play a round in 6 hours? My longest was 4 and half, that was in a fourball matchplay competition. 6 hours? What happened?

I totally agree with the losing your tempo and concentration on long rounds. If you plan ahead while not walking at a brisk pace, you can still finish a round pretty quickly.

An extra two hours, esp. during the weekend, is a serious time killer in terms of other things you could have been doing.

6 hours???

Here in the US, 5-6 hours on weekends on public courses, especially good ones at reasonable rates, is a regularity, not an anomaly. I've experienced a 7 hour round (I'll just walk off if that happens again.)

Having played in your area, I love your pace of play.

I've never enjoyed a round over 5 hours provided that most of the time is wasted while waiting for the next shot. If the course is especially difficult and just takes everyone a while to play, that's fine because at least you're constantly doing something.

However, all of the long rounds I've played have been because of the former. If we're nowhere near 18 in 4:45 during a casual round, I'll just call it a day (especially if conditions are a bit sub-par). I can't say I'd ever make myself suffer through a 6 hour round. In my area, you'll actually find a better pace of play at the upscale clubs because they try diligently to keep all of their customers happy and the volume is usually much lower than the local munis (but the munis tend to be set up to play a bit faster to compensate (e.g., shorter rough, etc.)). 4:20 or 4:30 seems to be the standard for the courses that I frequent. I've never played Bethpage (although I should since I'm only 2 hours away and my cousins play there as their home course), but I imagine that it's probably the worst combination in terms of speed - it's a famous public course that's set up to play tough.

I hate to say this, but I cant stand playng with SOME high HI like 25's. If they played like me when I was a 25, I can deal. I would struggle up to the hole, but I would play quickly.

LOL. This post has it all. So you're a 19 but you don't like playing with a 25? Really not a huge difference between a 19 and a 25 skill wise. So as a 19 you never hit into hard to find areas? Hard to believe. Nobody has ever had to wait for you?

Heck my handicap floats between 9 and 11 and I hit balls into bad spots all the time.

I am a 19.2 and I play with a 3.4. Last tournament we played as a team and he shot 1 under.

I am sure part of his skill comes from being able tune out everything, including his partner's play.

Who cares if you have to wait for your next shot, its not aggrevating at all. It happens. Those people who bitch and moan about slow play are rediculous, its golf.

Honestly, just tell the starter, there is a foursome infront of us, and we are staying up to them. To me staying up to a group isn't just hitting your shot as they just leave the green. To me is if you are on the tee box and they are on the green putting, thats keeping up. It was unreasonable for them to force you to let all those groups go through like that. But still, slow play is complained about to much these days.

There's a guy in a wednesday league that will pace off yardages from the pin to the fairway 80 yards out. Just his style, he takes forever over putts. I was in the group with him, it didn't bother me at all, he holds the whole league up, but he has the right to play like that, who cares.

If your tempo of your swing is messed up because its factored in by how fast you get to your ball and how long it takes for you to wait to hit your next shot, your tempo and control of your swing isn't that good. What about the time it takes to look for a ball, does that throw you off. Honestly its a shame that golf is being turned into a faced paced game like this. Given i was tought, ready golf. While others are hitting, get your yardage and general idea of the shot and golf club you want to play. Thats the way i play, but i don't push anybody infront of me hard, and if someone pushes me from behind i will take my time, screw them for playing fast.

If you like to have fun, keep a decent pace and practice some etiquette...I could care less what your handicap is. I agree...a lot of high handicappers are more fun to play with. Plus, when they hit that one awesome shot the look on their faces is priceless. A lot of low handicappers think they should be making millions staring down Tiger and Phil.

I don't mind playing with high handicappers, as long as they are willing to have a good time and not throwing clubs or getting angry.

Cheers!

    • I too, like @GolfLug, remember great wedge, iron shots, or my missed putts, more than my made putts. My most memorable recently, would be: #17 Old Course St. Andrews (last year) I had been putting awful all day (I started 3 putt, 4 putt, 3 putt, 3 putt), but found a putting stroke on the back 9 and was 1 under on the back going into 16 and of course I 3-putted it for a bogey. Got to 17 and my playing partner just hit it into the hotel, so I went a little more left and decided to not try and hit it over the hotel.  And as soon as my ball was in the air, I heard one of the other caddies do the chicken noise.  LOL My shot was a little more left than I wanted, about 185 yards, I hit a 6-iron and it was drawing right at the flag.  The pin was just to the right of he bunker and towards the front of the green. My ball hit short (and just missed going into said bunker) and stopped about 15 feet left of the hole. Had a little left to right break and as soon as I hit it, I knew it was in.  Birdie on the road hole, looked at the caddie and said not bad for a Chicken.  Parred 18 (missed 10 foot birdie putt) for a 35 on the back 9 at the Old Course. #18 Springfield G&CC Last year while playing in our season long match play event, my partner and I get the 18th hole needing to win the match to move on into the knockout round.  We are tied going into 18.  A tie and we lose on overall points by .5.  Our teaching pro is on the other team (very good golfer), so we were pretty sure we needed a birdie to have a chance to win the match, I hit on of the best drives I hit all day and had about 135 yards to the pin, but it was in a place where you didn't really want to be long.  So I hit a PW and it landed just short of the flag but released about 12 feet past the hole, so have a devilish putt coming back down the hill.  Our competitors were away and the pro missed his birdie putt by inches, I thought it was in when he hit it.  So after reading the putt, which probably had a 2 cup left to right break, I made the putt to win the match.   #15 Springfield G&CC A few years back, was playing in the first round of the Club Championship (against the previous years runner-up) and my putter was balky all day.  Got to the 15 hole, 2nd Par 5 on back, and was 3-down with 4 to play.  We both hit good drives, both hit good second shots and we both hit decent 3rd shots.  I was about 15 feet and he was just a hair longer.  He missed his putt, I had another slider putt down the hill, with about a foot of right to left break and made the putt.  I birded the next hole, to go 1 down, but not a memorable putt as I only needed a bogey to beat him on that hole, he had all kinds of issues going on.  Lost on 17, as he birdied it, right after I missed mine to lose 2&1.

    • Ok so as of this point the bug persists. We figured out that I can select the tees (gold or blue) manually and it resets the back 9 scorecard to the Lake course, but as soon as I add #10 manually, it automatically sets the back 9 as Ridge and no amount of playing around with the tees changes it. And it still doesn't save #10 when I sign off. Andy from support said he will speak to the tech team about it, but it seems there isn't anything either of us can do at this point. I've accepted that #10 is simply lost. I now have 17 correct holes and that's going to have to be good enough.
