God I hate this invented term "players' irons". Whee does it come from? From what I can glean, it's about hackers impressing other hackers in the car park. Just like all these guys who desperately search for a 2 iron to match their set, or claim to be able to hit it perfectly, despite there only being a handful left on tour. RAnt over (or just beginning)

First off, I'm sorry I used the words 'players irons' in referring to an iron designed for the better player/tour professional. I didn't realize you had such a hate for the term. MY BAD. Second off, I was looking for a starting point, and we both know I wouldn't have chosen my irons solely off this thread. Also, I said that the blades and 'tour' irons, do not have the same correlation between price and release date, as do 'game improvement' irons do. And why is it that everyone else's opinions are wrong because they're not, well, you.

Sam Snead Blue Ridge blades.
You´d get a set of them off ebay pretty cheaply. They´re really old but they´re the nicest irons I´ve ever hit.

And why is it that everyone else's opinions are wrong because they're not, well, you.

Because you need clubs that are right for YOU. Not clubs that somebody else likes and may never have ever even seen, let alone hit.

I hate the term "players' clubs", because when people use it, they are really talking about themselves, (the "player") not the club. Obviously, there will be irons that suit you that others like too, but trying to ascertain which irons are the "best ever" is only going draw responses which are at best subjective, and at worst, meaningless. Sorry, I had difficulty comprehending this bit: "meaning the best your irons are probably not gonna be the most expensive". My basic beef is not with you - there is nothing wrong with seeking advice, looking at what people suggest and then making your own decisions, but you must have noticed that many of the people who offer advice are just fans of golf equipment - many of whom think, for example, that Titleist is for "classy" players, or the TM make "the best" drivers etc. etc. None of it is true. For what it's worth, Nick Faldo used Mizuno MP-60 irons when he wasn't sponsored and he said they were the best irons he ever used. You won't go wrong with a set like that and you won't have to pay the earth for a used set.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

i went down the blade route......back to a combo set
i liked the CG1 BP's i had, but only from the 7-PW
i DID NOT have the game for the rest of the set

went to an old school set - Titleist 735.CM's
3-5 full cavity, 6-7 muscle back, 8-PW full blade
i think this is the best overall combo out there
you see lots of tour guys now hitting a much more forgiving long iron
being able to pull out a 4 or 5i and KNOW you can smooth that club no matter what....is awesome

i have been through a few sets of players and blades this year and glad im back to this combo set
im sure at one point i wont like them, but for now i do
and they have been played - they dont look new and shiney, they look like they can stuff 8irons to 4 feet from 165 all day!!!!
......(and for the record...yes I can hit my 8i 165..........)

  • 1 year later...

anything classic wilson staff. fluid feels, progressives, fg 17s shoot darts that miss within an area of like 2 inches (not exactly but possibly the most accurate they made).

they arent hard to find used and in nice condition. as time goes on you can even get them fitted with shafts that work for your swing and they will get even smoother.

also another vote for macgregor VIPs....very nice set of sticks

Before the Nike's, he also made Titleist do the same. Here you go, sex on a freakin stick...

The only thing I dont like about what these guys do is the way they treat the face. Does not look sandblasted. I have thought about getting these refurbed irons many times, but a guy here does the same, without the so call blue printing. I can spine/flo and set the swing weights myself. Still, for $400, cant really go wrong if these tickle your fancy.

Could they be any shinier? Reminds me of those fragile rings you can buy at the counter at most Dollar Stores. Black onyx or something like that? Different strokes for different blokes I suppose.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I am planning to get my MP-14's refinished once I get the funds to do this.

But my personal preference is to 'restore' the original look.

That item on ebay, I agree a bit too shiny, a bit too loud for my taste.

You can get Wilson Staff Ci9s for $200 ish now

They probably aren't 'the best'

But the price/performance ratio is elite.

Nice deal for sure. But if he's looking for "tour" irons, then the FG Tour has got the name cred. Would be tempted myself but for 40% import duty + 14% VAT.

IMO, it doesnt get any better than Mizuno MP-62s.  Ive tried lots of different blades and unless you are going to spend a lot more money for a set of Miuras, theres nothing like Mizunos.

So which different blades have you tried? Any lately?

There seem to be a lot of Cleveland and Titleist staffers putting their sponsors' newest forged musclebacks in the bag. I don't see too many Mizuno staffers with blades in the bag any more. In the 90s yeah, but it's been mostly cavity backs with their top guys for a while now.

Mainly because you can't pry the MP-62s out of their bags.

Howell just went the other way from JPX-800 Pros to the MP-59s. But he changes clubs like Canadians change their underwear, every other month.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
