You know the fairway is soft when...

...the ball you drive hits the fairway and doesnt bounce; instead the ball burries itself into the fairway.

How would you play that? youre still about 200 yards away (Flag is obviously against the wall of fairway in front of the ball)


Playing Royal St Patricks in Wisconsin today, it had been raining all morning. I was walking down that same fairway towards the green and a part of the fairway litterally gave way like a sink hole... my foot sank ankle deep into the fairway.

I did played my best round of golf to date... using a little tip from a Heineken commercial ( I slowed down my swing big time and hit a lot of fairways heh).


I love that commercial.

I'd take the free drop to which I'm entitled for a ball embedded in grass cut to fairway height or lower.

I love hitting of spongy fairways, the club glides so nice through it. After taking my relief from the embedded ball of course, which I've experienced lots of times with the driver.

Yesterday, 40% of our shots were like that or worse. Lots of rain the day before. Lift, clean and place.

There were a couple examples of that ruling in the PGA Championship yesterday. Very convenient. ;)

Make sure you check out the local rules on the courses you play, it varies what part of the course you can get relief from. Fairway and green are regulated in the rules, but the course can include the rest of the course too.

I dont think ive ever had that happen, I once played in some wet conditions where a saw the hole where my ball landed on my drive and I got exactly 1 yard of roll, not sure how it did that, more like it hit the ground and skidded to a stop.

I had a bunch of those on my last round. It was a combination of wet fairways and 4,000+ RPMs of backspin with my driver.

It's all more proof that when you swing the driver, you're spinning the earth backward, rather than hitting the ball forward. :P

You sometimes feel like the rules of golf are out to get you. Though a lot of people don't know about little rules that come in handy from time to time. The one iacas pointed out, and relief from animal droppings. Comes in handy when there are rabbit droppings at the base of trees, where you might find yourself blocked out. And even worm poo can reward some relief!

My fairways are similar to that, really annoying when your ball flight is high.

Here too. The ball gets embedded on shots with 4 iron, landing on a downhill slope.
