I am thinking about doing some gym work to strengthen my lower back as I have had issues with it for the last year or so.

My question is, what other exercises can i do to help me with golf?

Do any of you guys visit a gym regularly and do any of you focus on exercises specific for golf?

Im in the gym 4 nights a week. Not sure how to work out the lower back tho. Im into lifting heavy. I do stretch for 10mins before working out and after. Stretching really helps with the soreness and flexibility when it comes to swinging a club.

i workout all body parts regularly i dont know of any specific golf exercises but i can give you plenty of advice on a routine to get stronger all the way around

you work out 4 nights a week and you're "into lifting heavy" and you don't know how to work out the lower back...? How bout you can start with dead lifts, squats, rows...

what exactly do you mean by you're into lifting heavy, if you don't work out your lower back? Anyway, I work out 3 times a week with a trainer. Focus on strength training overall and flexibility. Definitely helps with golf in my opinion.

For golf, explosion type exercises work best. It defiantly helps. You retain your energy levels much longer. So your swing at the beginning, is the same at the end.

I don't wanna get jacked, maybe a little bigger.

I'm athletic, but would like to be slightly bigger.

then start mainly with compound exercises for each muscle like bench press for chest, squats for quads, curls for biceps, deads and rows for back and mix in a few isolation exercises prolly 8-12 rep range

I use a trainer, and we are very specific to golf. Stretching (flexibility,) rotator cuff, and core body strength combined with a ton of back exercises is what we do. I am an older guy and I know the exercise program has helped me greatly. I don't want power lifting training, I want core strength, flexibility, and a back that does not get sore. Nothing beats the exercise program in my opinion, but I do think you need a good trainer at least to get started -- someone who really knows the specific work you need so you get the most benefit and not hurt yourself. Form is everything when working out.

What are those?

Its more specific rapid fire type of exercise. I do lift light weights, but for example, one of my main exercises is throwing a 20 pd medicine ball into a wall or a buddies hands. You work the movement that way.

I guess you can classify squats and rows with lower back. I dont do dead lifts. Bench, Squats, upright rows, power cleans....

Lat pull downs might also be a good workout if your focusing on your back.

Definitely do dead lifts. compound exercises are essential in my opinion. squats and rows might not directly be classified as lower back, but it forces you to have good form with your lower back, thus you actually get good lower back work out.

hyper extentions and straight leg dead lifts, light weight!! after a couple weeks, 4 sets of 15 reps should be what you are striving for.

Depends, if you just do rows were you don't lean forward and keep your upper body still, that will only work the shoulders and upper back.
Lower back can be worked out with Hyperextensions, straight leg deadlife (not recommended unless experienced)
The one i like is hyperextensions on the pysio ball, pysio balls are great for working out, and fun ;b


For golf, i would do,

Squats, Lat Pulldowns, Planks (or mountain climbers), Side Planks, Medecine ball twists, pysio ball hyperextensions, YTWL shoulder exercise

+1. Working your core will make a world of difference. Google core exercises or go to MensHealth.com I think they had a golf work out that was primarily core


Medicine ball tosses with a partner work wonders. You lay on the ground and partner tosses the ball, catch it behind your head, sit up and toss it back. Works the core like crazy. Also, using one of those big bouncy balls you can do side sit ups. I've been lagging at the gym lately, once the cool season comes I'll ease off playing golf and be in the gym a lot more. I've never been into heavy lifting, my body just doesn't feel good doing it. I prefer cardio and stretching exercises.
