Maybe we need a dictionary definition of what flipping is.

Flipping:  The flip comes from an overactive right wrist. It's a "hit" impulse to use the right hand too early in the swing. The role of the right wrist is to retain the angle as long as possible all the way through impact.

Now that we have that established what do you think all of the videos above?

Just use some common sense and look at the pictures.

Golf isn't common sense,truly.....but in this case I see exactly what Lee and Phil are claiming.

IACAS....a slightly cupped wrist may be due to a more open face being used for a shorter higher shot, but the wrist is not flipping at impact.....David in FL is flipping.

Unfortunately, I couldn't do a face-on video on the driveway. If I had been "flipping" prior to impact, i.e., allowing the club head to pass my hands well ahead of the ball, I would have either skipped the club into the ball or flat out bladed it. Certainly not the clean pitches you saw off that lie. I'm hinging and unhinging quickly....I like the paintbrush analogy that @iacas uses in his video....but not flipping prior to impact.

@freedrop .  Here's a FO video I just shot.

Shot with the iPhone so not high speed video, but I imagine that @iacas or @mvmac can pull a still of impact.  You should see pretty clearly that although I'm hinging and unhinging quickly, and have certainly broken my wrist post impact, I'm maintaining shaft lean and not flipping prior to impact.

Couldn't catch impact precisely because of the 30fps limitation but I think this is pretty clear indication of what is happening. EDIT* Iacas beat me to it.

Of course this may be a moo* point if @freedrop doesn't believe his eyes. Now when I execute this shot my wrists probably DO flip a bit before impact as I am nowhere near as accomplished a player as David but the beauty of this shot is that the bounce saves me when I do, I have intentionally hit the ground first and still got a nice high pitch that landed softly. That's not to say I'm doing it right, just to illustrate the degree of forgiveness inherent in this technique.

*similar to a moot point, it's a cow's opinion, it doesn't mean anything, it's just moo. :-P

Ok @David in FL you are doing great work here and if your pitching works that is all that matters flip or not. Maybe you and the board can make one more trip to the driveway and take a coat hanger with you.

Why?

You do realize that flipping is fine for a short-game shot right? That's all that this thread is discussing. It's not discussing a full swing, which - as I previously pointed out - we have dedicated an entire Key (#3) to not flipping prior to impact. This isn't a thread about chipping, either, but pitching.

Also, note the several pictures of me (and even David) showing that he's not flipping PRIOR to impact, but afterwards.

I personally feel it is easier to control club head speed (be more consistent) if you take the wrists out of the short game equation and use just the arms and body.Probably even more true when under pressure.

That's chipping not pitching.

The only difference is the chip is low and running while the pitch is airbourne. No flip needed to get the ball in the air.

This is entertaining. Anybody got the over/under on how many more posts before freedrop cracks?
