So I'm WAY behind the hybrid bandwagon and looking to catch up a little and maybe take a few strokes off. Here's what I have in my bag
Driver, 3w,5w, 4iron-Lw. Pretty traditional.
My 4 iron is basically a 3iron. The loft is at 23* I hit it over 200 pretty reliably. sometimes 215-225. Usually high and lands soft if not on target.
So I know these hybrids are so easy to hit and control etc etc.. I wanna try some. The thing is I dont want to get rid of my 4 or 5 iron. I really like them and hit them ok. I hit NOTHING well.
So what replaces say my 3 and 5 wood? I'd have to drop the 3 and or 5 wood to get one in the bag. From the fairway a lot of times I'll hit my 4 iron instead of my 5 wood. very similar distance and anything with a driver shaped head or graphite shaft is currently giving me serious trouble. So are there configurations with driver - hybrid - hybrid- 4iron?
This is a basic question but i'm extremely unknowledgeable about them
thanks.
I dont know the difference between ironwood, hybrid, rescue club etc. Im looking for more accuracy and a tiny bit more distance than my current 4 wood.
I would like to use them as a replacement for the fairway woods from the occasional tee box if I can hit em straight and from the rough, fairway. Nickents have a great price and easy availability so.... WHICH ONES?

why fix something thats not broken?

if you don't need a hybrid, don't get a hybrid imo. You could get rid of the 5w and replace it with a 18 or 19* hybrid...but I'd keep the 3 wood in the bag.

HAhaha. I like that one.. As to the other poster my FW and Driver game is very well broken. Id like to ditch the 3w too if theres a suitable substitute. If I could hit it 220 in the fairway 80% of the time from the tee I'd shave a ton of strokes. none of the woods I have now are going anywhere straight or even predictably left or right. The other day I lost four balls on a tee in a practice round. One right, one in the water 40 yards in front of me and 2 left. Ill take that damned driver out of there too. Im going to get a bigger driver than what I have now and maybe a regular shaft and higher loft and swing a lot slower and see if I cant get back in line. But the hybrids I really want to experiment with.

sounds like you need lessons more than a hybrid. hybrids arent just some magical club that goes straight. sure it might be easier to get it up int he air than a fairway wood, but again...point remains, lessons.

I'm on that too. Thanks. Just found my teacher 2 minutes ago :):):) Aloha Golf Center.

Any help with this? I dont know the difference between ironwood, hybrid, rescue club etc..

Is this just different companies using different names or is there a difference?

Ironwood sounds like a driving iron, a hybrid is an easier to hit FW or iron, and a rescue club is what a high handicapper uses when they should be using a mid-iron to get back to the fairway. It's often used to hook a ball from the right rough into the left trees or pop a ball straight up and to the right into the water or OB.

Well I can do that with any club so I guess I dont need a rescue club. Haha . Thanks for the ironwood, hybrid definition though. My irons are playing ok and getting better. My 4 iron doesnt scare me but my FW do sometimes so I'll be looking at playing around with those. Thanks again.

An ironwood might also be what a really old person calls a fairway wood that's not made of wood. I know - weirdness.

I would look into dropping the 3 wood for a 1 hybrid (15-16 degree). I recently made that change and I find the 1H to be easier to hit straight off both the fairway and tees.

Sounds like you had the wrong 3-wood.

I am in the about same legue as you, although I know hybrids quite well, tried a few, some provide the same solid feel as your irons, but most are like fw's.

No hybrid is like a magical tool !

If you are a great iron player (uhhhh like me), maybe it might be an option to buy an old cavity back 3 or 2 iron with in your case about 20* loft to replace the 5W.

As I read it well ..... Just skip your 3W and maybe trade in that driver, as your driver sure isn't the easiest one to hit.

Personally I went for a hybrid, that I about only use for serious distance from bad lies, like in the rough and for control I went for a steel shaft.

Try a 19* or 20* hybrid in place of your 5 wood, although the differences between a FW and hybrid depend a lot on the individual club. I enthusiastically recommend the Wilson Staff FYbrid 19.5* (which I use in place of a 5 wood). Thing is, kind of looks just like a 5 wood. I think the CoG is slightly lower, and the shaft is slightly shorter. Either way-easy to hit, long or short, and doesn't always want to go left.

OP: If all your long clubs are giving you trouble, consider taking a lesson to see if you have a swing flaw. Buying clubs won't help if your basic swing is messed up.

As for people who drop FWs and use just hybrids, this works well for stronger players. I like the 3W and 5w in part because of the extra distance they provide.

Test out any hybrids if at all possible. If you hook the regular hybrids, try to find a Tour model with a square face.

I only have one hybrid, a 15* that replaced an old three wood. It hit it higher, straighter etc than the three wood ever was. From there I go to 2-PW in the irons. It's a funny looking bag... Driver, one hybrid, lots of irons after that....

I may replace the two iron someday with about a 18* hybrid
