As hard as I've been working on my swing, I never videotaped my swing until tonight. I played horribly, my wife was tired and the course was packed so we bailed after hole #6. On the way out I noticed the range was empty so I suggested we go and split a bucket.

On the range I started hitting them great (or so I thought). I was hitting my 5iron about 160 with a lot of consistency so I asked my wife to stand behind me and tape my swing with her iPhone.

Holy Cow! Unless she tricked me somehow, I am a complete hack! Very dissapointing to see how far underplane I take the club back because:
A. I know not to do this and thought I wasn't and
B. I have practically no chance to hit a good shot with that move.

The point of this thread? There isn't one except maybe you should videotape yourself if you havent because you might be doing things you TOTALLY THINK YOU AREN'T!!!

On the bright side, now that I realize I'm doing this it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I had the same revelation when I first recorded my swing. It was a real eye opener. Glad I did it though, I fixed a number of things with it.

Just had my first recorded swing in a golf galaxy lesson (really liked the lesson there), its amazing how much you learn from watching your swing back. Kind of want to buy a camera so I can tape my own swing but the high speed ones are probably pretty pricey.

I thought I had a lovely swing until I video taped it, 2 days later I went and booked some lessons to try and fix it. The swing was an abomination.

Yeah...that's what happened with me, too. I played a scramble and on one of the driving holes they do a video and send it to you via email (kinda cool). Well, I was sooo bent over and wide, horrible stance, flipped at it, it's amazing that I can shoot in the low 80s on a consistent basis. I figured there's too many things in my swing holding me back and the low 80s is about as low as I can get with this swing. So...I booked some lessons. Now...after reading other posts about S&T, I'm wondering if I should go that route.

Practise your takeaway with a mirror behind you, helps a lot.

Most golfers do this as well as letting the club head get inside. Should be an easy thing to fix, but if you have ingrained the move over time, then it is a tough thing to change. However, it is a highly recommended change for any swing. I think of it as the number one reason for OTT swings.

I just discovered this recently. Jim Suttie’s book helped me feel it. Here is how it goes. Take a 5 iron put the butt end in your belly button and take your normal grip on the shaft. Keeping the butt in your belly button until you get to 8 o”clock. Once at 8 o’clock push the club away from your belly button with your left arm, you will not be inside at all, and continue to rotate your shoulders then rotate through. It worked for me after years of taking it extremely outside. Let me know if this gives you the feel.

I think of it as the number one reason for OTT swings.

Why is that? How about too quick of a weightshift, a too flat shoulder turn from the top, an incorrect sequencing resulting in an armsy motion from the top. When i think of OTT i always think of an error during the transition phase, not really during the backswing (if i get into a correct position on top despite have an underplane takeaway).

Check out the previous threads about the Casios. High frame rate (200 fps) video models at very reasonable prices. I think the older models went for well under $200 and don't let the price fool you, they are pretty good.

The reason I think under and inside leads to OTT is I see a lot of guys start off this way, then raise up their arms in the transition, and having no place to go, they come over the top. A one plane or a two plane that stays on or above the plane provides the room to slot the turn back into the ball from the inside. I would not say that the under and inside is the only reason of OTT, but I see a lot of "under, up, and over" swings. I also see a few outside and up then drop and under swings... both of these are inconsistent for most people, but there are always exceptions.

Agree 100% with this. I used to do this and I had no idea I was doing it until I actually video'd my swing.

If I recorded my swing with a 30 FPS camera will I get anything out of it or do I need something higher speed? Is there anything above 100fps you can get for less then $200?

If she was either a little bit right of the line, or holding the camera a little too high, then you may not be coming back nearly as far inside as you think. Cameras don't lie, per se, but they also don't have depth perception, and can create some very deceptive images if the camera angle is not carefully controlled.

Because the golf swing is about counter balance, if you take the club head to under, i wont say hands to deep or i will get in trouble ;b. If the club head gets to behind you, then its hard to keep it there because of the forces of the golf swing. So it will try to redirect back to plane, but usually goes OTT. Look at Couples, he takes the club head out wide, his hands get deep, but at the top he's able to drop it on plane because gravity is easier to redirect from that spot. But its easier to keep it on plane if it starts on plane. Thinking about swinging a weight on a string, it keeps going well if its one a nice plane.

you want prolly at least 60 fps. it can be had for cheapy cheap. check out the kodaks, the casios are great too. you can get a casio that will do 240 fps for less than $125.

You can get some things out of 30 FPS, but not near as much as the higher frame rates.
