I'm not saying that Dan needs to bulk up really, but his swing makes it look like it wouldn't take much of a breeze to knock him over, and he doesn't have enough accuracy to compensate for his lack of driving distance. Dufner still can hit it 300, Dan isn't anywhere close.

I'm going to agree with this, but not going to emphasize the "breeze knock him over" part. :-D

Lest we forget Mike Weir has a green jacket and players like Charles Howell. McIlroy is what, 5'9", 165?

McIlroy could pick Dan up and toss him like a cheap sack of potatoes. He's strong. Very strong.

I'm 5'9", 170...and my 7 iron swing speed is faster than Dan's 4 iron.

If he doesn't snap Dan in half attempting to do it. :bugout:

OK, he'd kick his butt. Hey Dan Plan - you're not working at the gym hard enough. I question your motivation.

What about Ricky Fowler? He can't be more than 160.

I think he weighs less than Dan. He has lots of fast twitch muscles, and he's super thin to boot. Looks like it's in his genes: http://www.fullertontitans.com/sports/w-golf/2011-12/bios/fowler_taylor00.html She started 4 years ago.

Ricky? Combination of fast twitch muscle fibers and phenomenal flexibility. He's not a lifter so much, but he's still somewhat of a gym rat.

I'm actually looking at building my home gym over the winter so I can get back in shape for next season. Beginning of last season, I was 154 lbs, but stronger and in much much better shape than I am now at 173. Size isn't everything...I was 154 and benching 225, squatting 250, and deadlifting 315. Now...cut those numbers in half lol.

It sucks watching your driving distance decrease due to laziness lol

Right, but I haven't lifted since May of last year. I just need to get back at it and I'll be back to normal by spring.

And I'm still wondering what really creates distance. I'm not as strong as I used to be but hit the ball the same distances.

I would like to be able to attribute it to a better swing or knowing how to hit the ball better (or something) but I'm not sure any of those are true or hold any water.

I do think I'm still as fast with my hands as I was when I was stronger so I'm leaning toward speed being the main factor.

Of course speed is the main factor, but where do you think speed comes from?

Just think of a 12 year old...there's a reason that even with impeccable swing technique, they won't hit it as hard as an adult. They lack leverage and strength.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying. Fast twitch type II or even IIa muscles are what give you that speed. If you are born with it, you can pick up sports that require speed a lot faster. If not, you need to build it up through serious training.

Very much agree. Likely a book combined with speaking engagements.

It's obvious he's going to try and troubling that he gets the kind of attention he receives when there are thousands of other much more gifted people giving this game a go that are putting in more time and going about it in a more systematic way.

Actually I think we are born with it.

The 12 year old analogy doesn't apply at all to why I can hit the ball as far as I could when I was stronger.

Yeah, I agree. It's too bad those people don't get this press to find their maximum potential. I remember back and forth chats with @GHIN0011458 , and feel like people like him and others on this site deserve all the attention that Dan is promoting.

If Dan really cares about golf, he would use his marketing skills to sell the public on those people, and grow the game instead.

What's his message though? He really isn't that good given the time he devoted, he doesn't have a better way to get better than your typical pro, look how he's struggling now.

Man, if people start learning golf by putting only for the first three months, I'm gonna puke. That is a setback for the game, imho.

    • I'm behind and I just saw Xander and Finau miss par putts to hand the Ints a hole.
    • The International Team is tanking on putts.
    • Decibels is sound 'pressure' not wave frequency. From that perspective a SGI Iron will have very different pressure wave than a blade even with the same speed and other variables considered equal. Additionally, since your phone will not be in direct path the turbulence difference (which generates the sound 'pressure) will have much lesser variance. In other words you will have convergence at one particular speed. Maybe it's this 90MPH speed with your 6i. But I doubt you will have proportional deviation above or below the speed to give you anything will reliability.  And other speeds? 80, 90?
    • You could have saved us all some time by realizing I tend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to science and tech. 😛  What? The only way they would imply that it would be "possible" is if you were able to spend six figures (minimum) AND that doesn't include the swing robot that could reach peak speed at the same exact location every time. No, they didn't say it was possible for someone like you to do anything remotely good. Session to session. The PRGR doesn't work the same way - it samples the speed, from behind (inline with the direction of travel) with radar, and takes the highest number it registers. The distance from the PRGR isn't super relevant. You're not reading. Or understanding. No to both. The former is because of the microphones, and the latter is because a clubhead swing more closed versus more open will have a different air flow and thus a different pitch and volume. Clubheads are not symmetrical. You're missing the point. How reflective some of that stuff is could matter. The sounds it generates to background noise could matter. 85 dBs is generally considered ear-injuring volume. You don't "need to find an app" because this will not work at all.
    • But it will change from session to session, from one person’s location to the next, etc. If your goal is to figure out X db = Y mph in swing speed to share with others, that matters.
