Ben Crenshaw: "On occasion you may swing the club very slow and smooth and to your surprise the ball will go a mile. So, you just think to yourself I'll just do that again but put a little more on it... It doesn't work that way."

Absolutely true. And the thought of "put a little more on it" can often mean tightening chest and arm muscles and casting at the ball, so you actually hit with less speed.

Ben Crenshaw is one of my favorite Youtube guys.  So much great stuff!!!

I just don't get that little leg thing he does before he swings, but he has never taught that move that I've seen.  Maybe it's just one of those personal weird little things everyone has....

My favorite golf quote ever came from Mike Weir. He was preparing for an approach shot at I think it was the PGA Championship several years ago. Anyway some nosy reporter came up to him and asked him "What are you gonna try to to do here with this next shot?". He was obviously not happy that in the middle preparing for a shot he had a camera and mic in his face and his response was "Well... Im going to try to hit the ball as close to the hole as I possibly can." he then walked away. The way he said it and dumbfounded look on the reporters face after were priceless.

Yes I'm Aware That's 16 Clubs!

I agree this is one if not the best tip ever.  My instructor would stress this over and over "swing easy" so this is one of my major swing thoughts.  Contrary to intuition you will most likely hit it farther this way.

"Drop the club on the ball" is one of the best swing thoughts I've ever been told.  I've used it for 10 years!

My old stuff I still use:

Putter - Odyssey 2-Ball DFX
Wedges - Cleveland Rg. 588 (47º, 52º, 54º, 57º)

Ball - Pro V1x

I read something similar in another thread on here recently.  I went out and was absolutely nailing my drives with what seamed like no effort on the swing.  I'd come back and see how far I could hit it, and it would shorten about 30 yards.  The more I used my body to pull the club through and let the head come down on an easy path through the ball the better my contact and ball flight was.  Not only better, but more consistent.  The nice and easy practice swing I take now is also the nice and easy swing I use when I address the ball.  Things are going better.

I feel out of place here, because when I swing harder I hit it farther.  Maybe it's the way I'm swinging harder:  get more extension, get farther back, reeeeeeach back and high until your arms force the air out of your lungs, then just shift and swing like normal.  I key it all on that line from the song:  "Da dunna WAR!  Huh!  Good god y'all what is it good for".  WAR starts my transition and I actually get my stomach muscles to do the "Huh" part on the second half of the downswing.  Sounds gay, but ball goes miles.  It feels like dropping a sledge hammer off a roof onto a can of Dr. Pepper.  Sounds pretty much like that too.

I'd say the best ever tip I ever heard about keeping a good round going was from Rick Astley  "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and hurt you..."  Sayonara everyone if that gets me banned from this forum .

Hey, whatever works, right? Haha!

Fact - More reach and swing speed will result in further distances off the tee.  Look at those ReMax world champion guys.  Huge back swings with 55" shafts.

But in general, when people swing harder, they become inefficient somewhere else in their swing that causes them to lose power.  In your instance, it sounds like you maintain your fundamentals and sound tempo (to music, which I personally think is awesome) causing you to gain some yards for rearing back.
