I have a persistent superstition that does not make any sense but it bothers me to no end. Like most of you I have a closet full of very nice golf shirts and related apparel but I almost always wear older, almost threadbare shirts and shorts because I score better! huh? If I wear my classy stuff I play poorly but if I dress like a ragamuffin I, for some reason, feel like I can shoot lights out.

It may not be that nuts. If I play well with a certain hat, shirt, shorts combo I will wear it again. Wednesday I played well wearing an orange Adidas ClimaCool shirt and my new Scotty Cameron Camo Trucker Cap. I threw the shirt and shorts in the wash that night and come Sunday wore the same shirt and hat. I had another decent round. The best part is the people I played with on Wednesday were not going to be there on Sunday so I didn't have to worry about looking like a bum. Now I can safely wear it again Wednesday and keep the streak alive.

My glove has to be off and in my back pocket before I step onto the green to putt.

Lastly;

The headcover of my driver never enters the tee box, it is off before I bring the driver through the "threshold of the teebox", I don't know, just someting soft and squishy doesn't belong in a place where I'm trying to think of crushing the ball I guess.

If I'm scoring, I don't wash my ball. When I bogey, it gets cleaned to wash the bogey off. I'm always happy if my ball is filthy.........

I don't think I have any, just some things I need to do before playing. I won't wear a watch while playing. I also empty my pockets (I always have to much change in my pockets and I keep my wallet in my front pocket) because it would drive me nuts. I only keep one tee in my left pocket.

Don't think I do it because of superstition but because it is rather convenient. I always slide my tee between my head and my hat in front of my right ear after I’m done with it. A good place to hold it and I always know where its at.

I sprayed the grips of my clubs with body spray - the same kind that girls use. It started as a crappy joke a buddy pulled on me earlier this year, covering my putter grip in the stuff - but I proceeded to get up and down about ten times that day, so I figured something must have clicked.

Imagine myself (6'5', about 300 lbs and a beard that threatens to turn me into a yeti if I don't hit it with a blow torch every morning) in a Bath and Body works buying a bottle of the stuff.

That's not really a superstition...

Mine are... I don't have many. I mark my coin with a foreign two-tone coin because it's practical. My pre-shot routine is my pre-shot routine, so that's not superstition. Hmmm... I'm trying to think of any. I had a ton in baseball, but none in golf? I guess so.

I have to have my pockets completely empty, aside from my ball marker, divot tool, extra ball, and 2 to 3 tees (no more). All of these items have to be in my right hand front pocket also.

I forget to remove my wallet from my back pocket occasionally and even if it doesn't screw me up I swear it can/will so I promptly remove it upon discovery.

Another is if I have a certain tune stuck in my head I always find myself reciting it while in my pre-shot routine. Not sure that's a real superstition though. It can be rather annoying actually, imagine Bananrama, or the Go-go's every shot....no wonder I'm a hack sometimes!

Not weird ones, I don't think...

If I'm hitting it well, I try not to change anything. I keep hitting the driver, for instance, even if it's a hole where I usually hit a 3 wood. I will use the same tee, the same ball. I consider these supersitions because they are in some cases irrational choices based on the assumption that there may be some super-natural force guiding my success at the moment, and I don't want to disturb the good "karma."

Now, a more specific way to put it are whether you have any golf _quirks_, things that you just like to do all the time, but not which you necessarily believe are helping you.

My golf quirks:

1. I love clean clubs. I rub the faces and scrape out the grooves, clean the sole and the number stampings on the sole, etc. I wipe all the ball marks off, and the paint that the tee leaves on the faces. Ditto with golf balls--love clean golf balls, and won't generally use a scuffed ball (except in the case of the superstition above).

2. I am a clothing and shoe freak. I'm not overly trendy and stylish, don't wear J Lindberg or anything like that, but I like to have nice-fitting, color coordinated clothes on, and love the new 'tech' fabrics that don't get all wet and sweaty. I have 4 pairs of golf shoes, and am always looking for more.

3. I love playing run up shots. If I have an 60-80 yard shot to a green which is open in front, I love trying to play it with a 7 iron or 8 iron. I'm not sure how this preference developed, and I'm not sure I save any strokes doing this, but I just love doing it.

4. I have a habit of always checking where the ball mark is on the face of the club after hitting. Usually you can tell from the feel of impact, but the first thing I do after watching the ball land is to bring the club face up to my face and check where the ball mark is. I hate impacts way out on the toe, especially scratchy/sandy ones that mar up your short irons.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
