I'm a little peeved at Fred right now..

I have always been a fan of Boom Boom, but if he picks Tiger as a captain's pick.. GRRRRRR..  Tiger has no right to jeopardize the team by accepting a Capt's pick.. Freddie shouldn't even be giving Tiger the option..  I will LOSE all respect to this match if Freddie only picks Tiger because of possible TV ratings..  There are a handful of golfers right now that are easily out performing Tiger, and should be given first consideration..  If fact if I was a guarantee spot, I would demand that those more deserving get their opportunity to shine..  Tiger is currently 24th in points.. There are a handful of players as well that are nipping at his heels, and are OUT performing Tiger coming in the homestretch.. Players like JB Holmes, Dufner, DA Points, Kim, Woodland, Verplank..

Reality is that Tiger will be picked for TV ratings. After watching him at the PGA it's hard to come any other conclusion that having him on the team helps the international side's chances.

You hate Tiger Woods. We know.

Truth is even last year he performed well at the Ryder Cup.

I guess you don't watch All-Star games from other sports, there are many athletes that get selected for such teams that aren't deserving, but end up on the team because they are fan favorites (good for ratings) or personal friends of the captain.  I'm guessing Couples is in a tough spot in that the PGA and PGA Tour have probably put a little pressure on him to have Tiger on the team for ratings and news coverage.  Tiger also put Freddie in a bad position by agreeing to play on the team before being asked.  If Freddie doesn't invite him on the team it looks like he's snubbing Tiger and creates a ton of news stories about why he doesn't like Tiger.

Just realized you were from New York. :-P Fine then. Read, Kevin Youkilis, circa 2011. (As much as I love the guy, he didn't deserve it this year.) :-)

Because I want to give the US the best chance to win, that makes me a Tiger Hater?   Tiger has dropped from 24 to 28th in cup points.. He'll probably end up over 30th by the dead line date.. There are many more players deserving to be on the "all star" team then Tiger at this point..  It would be one thing if he was on the bubble in the top 15 and has had moments of glory.. However, gone all summer, no play time, failed at Bridgestone and PGA..  When was the last time a Captain spent one of his picks OUTSIDE the top 20?  let alone someone sitting at 28th.. ??   Just curious

HARRISON, N.Y. (AP) -- U.S. captain Fred Couples wants Tiger Woods on the Presidents Cup team, provided Woods plays tournaments before he shows up at the Australian Open a week before the matches. Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship -- only his second tournament in four months -- and failed to qualify for the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. That makes him ineligible for any PGA TOUR event until the first week of October. Couples is to make his two captain's picks on Sept. 26, the day after the TOUR Championship. "He can't just show up the week before in Australia," Couples said Wednesday at the Senior Players Championship. "I have made it clear that whoever I picked will be playing the Australian tournament the week before. But I need him to play more than just there. There's quite a few tournaments after the TOUR Championship." Woods already has a contract to play in the Australian Open in Sydney. The Presidents Cup is the week after, on Nov. 17-20, at Royal Melbourne. Woods has played every Presidents Cup since he first became eligible for them in 1998. Couples and Woods are longtime friends, and when Couples agreed to return as captain, he jokingly sent Woods a text message telling him to play well so the captain wouldn't have to waste a pick on him. Turns out it was no joke. Because of injuries to his left leg, Woods went from the Masters on April 10 to the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational on Aug. 7 without completing a tournament. Then came the final major, where he missed the cut by six shots and finished out of the top 100 for the first time in a major. "I really want him on the team based on my opinion that he's been the best player for 10 straight years," Couples said. "I don't think you can push him down because he's not playing maybe as well as 20 other guys that could be picked. A couple of times I've been picked for a Presidents Cup or a Ryder Cup, and sometimes that's just the way it falls." Couples said he has talked to Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, about playing more events and "we're going to figure out a way that we can get this done." After his press conference, Couples told Golf Digest for a story on its website, "From what I see, he's looking to turn it around quicker, but not playing much golf. He may read that and say, 'Screw him.' I mean he's my favorite player. But to get better, you gotta play." Woods said upon leaving the PGA Championship that he has plenty of time to work on his game, but he did not rule out playing more. Couples pointed to Luke Donald and Dustin Johnson, who play about two dozen times a year, and are getting better. "I just don't know how he can sit there and think his game is going to improve," Couples said of Woods. Woods and Steve Stricker went 5-0 two years ago in the Presidents Cup at Harding Park. The only team -- Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup -- that Woods missed was in 2008 because of knee surgery. "I'm the captain, and he wants to be on the team," Couples said. "This is my chance to hold my rank above him one time. And I'm going to do it. Look, he has carried this TOUR for a long time. If somebody looks at it wrong, if I end up picking him -- which I probably will -- they would be crazy. He doesn't want to go there and lose. He hates to lose. So he's going to do his best. "But I've got to push him to play a little bit so he'll do a little bit better." Meanwhile, Couples said PGA champion Keegan Bradley was not guaranteed a captain's pick if he needed one. Bradley is a 25-year-old rookie who has won twice this year, including the final major of the year. "I firmly believe that the way he's playing, he's going to play his way on the team," Couples said. "And that would be, for him, the safest way of getting on this team. If he doesn't make it, he's got a great shot at being picked." Players have until the third playoff event -- the BMW Championship in Chicago that ends Sept. 18 -- to finish among the top 10 and qualifying. Bradley is at No. 18.

Hate him or love him (or love to hate him or for that matter hate to love him)..... Tiger Woods presence at any event is good for that event.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
