The first 2 balls were hit out of bounds. The third off of the tee is in the fairway. His approach shot (on a par 4) is short. His chip is on the green. He one putts and claims a 7 for the hole. Is that correct?....(There was only so much I could say on the title, both questions are relevant.)

I agree. He and another golf buddy swears it's a 7. Luckily the round was won by more than 1 stroke and not won by him. But I can't seem to explain the descrepancy in their math to them....

First hit went OB; must take penalty and distance so hits another from tee (This would be hit Number 3)

Next hit #3, went OB again; penalty and distance and must hit from tee again (this would be hit number 5)

Approach shot would be hit # 6

Chip shot would be # 7

Putt would be # 8

Thank goodness for printers. This situation will happen again with these guys. (I am sure they will get a kick out of that prediction.) I will pull this out of the bag and see if they will try to dispute this. Thanks Again!

8 is correct.  The way I like to count stroke+distance in my head is to forget about whether a stroke is a penalty or not and instead just count a stroke for the return trip from the OB to the re-tee.  So it's 1 stroke to OB, 1 stroke back to the tee, 1 stroke OB, 1 stroke back to the tee, 1 stroke to the fairway, etc.  If I try to count strokes and penalties independently, I get confused.

It's basically whatever he shot plus 2 strokes per ball. Par 4,  plus 4, equals 8.

That's how I remember it too, for OB and hazards. :-) "One in, one back out, hitting another one," for hazards, and "One out, one back in, hitting another one" for OB.

Did you ask how he got to seven?  Is he missing a stroke or not counting one of the penalty ones?

That's against the rules. You are required to use a minimum of 3 mulligans a hole.

What...are they three years old?
