My Swing (Ernest Jones)

Yea the troughs of that roller-coaster are no fun, but they're an unfortunate staple of this game, it seems. I'm right there with you. Ahhh, okay re: your on the course swing thought. Yea, like I said, you'd know way better than me obviously. Appreciate the reply, as always.  How's the short game and putting these days?

Putting is vastly improved thanks to Aimpoint, a little putter modification and Erik's decel thread. Pitching was awesome until this morning when I started toe-blade-shanking them but that's just a symptom of my full swing woes leaking into my overall confidence. Not really worried about it, just gotta work through this valley. It's funny (or sad), when you're hitting the ball well you think you're golden but when you start to falter you feel like there's no hope. This game demands a ton of humility, perseverance and emotional balance. Good times!

True.  All it takes is a few decent shots/holes to be fired up again.

I have gotten to the point to where it seems like I should be able to play to a certain level.  If I can't, my mindset is to quit.  I do not think I would be happy shooting mid 90's and carrying drivers 210 for the rest of my life.  I am sure some people would be, but if I am at my ceiling, I would think to quit.  I really do not think I am at my ceiling though.

Honestly, in the private forum "The Locker Room" we've all talked about how great your swing is for an 18.

@Ernest Jones Yea, Aimpoint is really cool. I love how it's readjusted the way I understand green reading. My first lesson on it was two years ago, so I kind of do my own bastardized version of it now.

And those toe-shanked pitch shots will disappear with time, I promise you. In the end, playing this game A LOT goes a helluva long way (Captain Obvious statement).

Every once and a while ill hit a toe shank when pitching also and what I've found is I do that when I start to try to hit the ball. As long as I remember to turn through and let the club do the work I seem to have good results. The hit instinct is just hard to let go of.

@JetFan1983 , while comments like this definitely make me feel better about my swing, can you see why it could also frustrate me?  Ever since I started viewing my swing on video I have felt the same way.  I can see a lot of swings that (IMO) appear worse, yet the poster is stating distances that are FAR longer and handicaps are FAR lower than mine.  I keep thinking there is something more I am missing.  I wish I lived closer to Erie.

I definitely do not mean to sound bitter.  I really do appreciate all of the guys who have helped me so far.  Even my untrained eye can see the improvement in my swing so far.  Again thanks.

I haven't read the whole post but I a pretty solid with a wedge on chips/pitches but I sometimes miss with a toe shank (goes almost straight right). I do it 100% because of decelerating the club at impact. Make sure you swing through even the chips. I am guessing there may be more reasons for it but just a check point for you because I struggled with it creeping in for 2 years before I realized why it was happening.

Both of you have decent swings @14ledo81 and @Ernest Jones , I think the one thing we should remember is that it is frustrating seeing someone who has a natural talent for putting the ball into the hole in the least number of strokes and have the most horrendous looking swing to boot. There are so many examples of this that I could write for another 20 pages and not be done.

What we should keep in mind is that we are developing a swing that we can keep for a lifetime. It is also a nicer looking and feeling swing. Part of the fun is understanding our swings, and hitting balls in a satisfactory manner. We should just grace ourselves with the enjoyment we get from learning to swing the most efficient way we can, and enjoy the fluidity of the motion it creates.

Scores will eventually come our way, and distance will come as well. Just take heart and keep up the good work and training. It's is starting to work for me, and I am sure if it works for me, it will work for both of you two.

That's cool. I hear ya on the not understanding how worse looking swings can often produce better results. All I can say is that the scorecard is the last place where improvement appears. For myself, I can attest that I tend to "get in my own way" mentally sometimes but the key is to just enjoy yourself out there and take the good with the bad. Golf is one of the few, if not only, games you can play for a lifetime. Just enjoy the journey and the friends you make along the way. :beer:

One of the main benefits golf does for me is a break/stress reliever.  Many times I play twilight by myself (that sounds bad).  Not many people on the course, so I can just play and keep moving.  Most times, hours go by, and I realize I have not thought about anything.  I usually start at 4:00, and in the summer, leave at 9:30 feeling extremely refreshed.

I also like hunting.  While it provides me with a break from work, there is a lot of time to just sit and think, so it does not provide the "therapy" that golf does.

for the guys who want to hit it farther, keep in mind that any mistakes you make will be even farther off line.  i can easily push slice a ball into the far right rough of the next hole over, almost 2 holes over.  the farther you hit it, the less margin for error you have.

On my way to the range. I'll post video later on. After about a week of the best golf of my life I'm back to being a total mess. Slices and low burners. Yuck. Putting is awesome but who cares if you're 2 over by the time you finally hit the god damn green! :bugout:

I can't think of a long hitter who, given the option, would willingly accept hitting the ball shorter.
