In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Don't swing harder.

Yeah. I've never played a course with trees.

My point is, you can make double from the middle of the fairway (I have), and birdie from the trees (I have). Driving is overrated.

Hey, it's my Golden Rule.

Saying certain aspects of the game are overrated is overrated.

Yeah I'm sure you approach every round with that thought. How's that work for you?

Look guys...that's my Golden Rule. It keeps my attitude up if I hit a bad drive, that I can still recover & make a par. Is this a difficult concept to grasp?

Every aspect of the game is important to me. That's how I approach my round. I play with a lot of short knockers who whine about long drivers who can't hit the fairway, then they proceed to hit their ball into trouble . . . 150 yards off the tee. For me to saying something, anything, that has an effect on my score is overrated is overrated. I can make a decent number in spite of bad shots off the tee, but having to aim away from the flag or even away from the green on most approaches makes for a pretty frustrating round, in general.

I really doubt you approach every tee shot with the attitude of, "it really doesn't matter where this goes because my next two shots will make up for it". If that's honestly your approach, then no, I do not grasp it.

No, I don't approach it that way. You're putting words in my mouth (or keyboard heh).

When I'm over my tee ball I am trying my very best to put the ball in play to set up my next shot, like I approach every shot. However, I don't put undue pressure on myself should things not work out as planned. If I knock one in the junk I will tell myself, don't sweat it. Driving's overrated.

It works the other way too. If I stripe one down the middle I remind myself that the hole is far from over & that I need to bring it home with a good approach & putt. Because you can still butcher a hole from the middle of the fairway. I've done it often.

Make sense? If yes, good. If not, fine. It works for me. Cuz I don't believe this thread was intended to convince anybody of anything, but to state what our golden rule is. You don't have to own it, don't have to agree with it. Don't even have to understand it. Tho I do hope I've helped you to understand how I think out there. If you're still unclear PM me.

As the saying goes, you drive for show, but you putt for dough.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
