I tee it low....1/4" low....just enough that it sits up, but low enough that I'm hitting down on it.

how high do you guys play long irons (1-iron thru 3-iron). started teeing them up a bit higher... definitely getting more distance but alot more inconsistant.

I tee it low just like any other iron. I can crank my 3 iron 220, maybe 240 on a good day and a nice roll.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but it was on topic with my question.

When I tee up the ball, I generally only tee the ball up just barely off the ground, because whenever I am holding an iron in my hand I have to hit down on the ball because that is the only iron swing I know at the time.

When teeing up, however, should I be swinging my iron more like a fairway wood and sweep it off the tee a little bit? Of course a slightly higher tee would be necessary to do this.

I tee it up pretty high and I hit it like my driver.

The ball goes really high and lands softly

A couple of friends who played low-profile fairway woods (pre-hybrid) used to put their ball on a fluffy tuft of grass on the tee box. They said it prevented pop-ups off the tee.

OK, so it seems that there is a myriad of options. This is what I do too. In fact, I don't even use a tee I just use the head of a tee that someone broke off prior to me. Sometimes it can be as short as 1 cm and I stick half of that in the ground.

So the idea is the same as with hitting an iron off the ground, ball first contact, lag club head and take a divot?

Hi,

I always tee up the ball where I can - sand wedge or 3 iron... using a broken wooden tee.
I really push the tee in low - but it gives me a consistent position - I'd prefer that to playing off the grass.
I also think it saves the tee areas slightly and my divots with a teed ball are very slightly smaller and less deep - so that has got to be good for the course.

All I would say is that when I play with some people I see them tee the ball quite high. They literally pick the ball off the tee - as a result the ball makes contact higher up the clubface and the ball doesn't go quite as far as normal.

Some Pros (Laura Davis and Paul Broadhurst) make a small mound by knocking up a bit of turf using their iron against the heel of their shoe. I've copied this when I can't find a suitably small broken wooden tee - it has the same effect as a low tee and I find it makes very little damage to the tee area.

I have played a few courses where they insist on using a tee peg from the tee area.

If I am able to use a tee with any club, I take full advantage of it.
I tee it up with every iron besides wedges. Tee it really low and swing away like normal.

The game is hard as is. Why would you not take advantage of teeing it up when allowed?

I see a few of my buddies not teeing it up on any of the par 3's. I am more than happy to take their money, when they throw away the advantage.

This macho mentality they have have cost them a good chunk of change... but I am not complaining.

I hit most of my iron shot off the grass. Seems like teeing them up makes me not want to hit down on the ball.

I never tee up an iron, beginning tomorrow I will.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.Β
