i cant help but wonder what was the message behind that, and he didnt really go to jail now did he?

He probably did. It isn't legal. I doubt there was much of a message, either.

I went to sleep and missed that!!!  I guess when you are in San Francisco, you should expect that!

Anyone else think that Bob Costas is an insufferable puke?  I can't stand the guy.  I want to watch golf, not have some 10 minute up close and personal story aired so we miss the tournament.  He is horrible in the Olympics as well.  He always brings up negatives during interviews.  He was talking to one player, maybe Simpson, and instead of saying, "You had a great round and have a chance to win", he said more to the effect, "yeah the other guy is blowing the lead to give you a chance just like so-and-so back in '97."  Awful.

I bet Costas was always picked last for kickball.

CBS and Golf Channel please, please outbid NBC for all the majors!!

Perfect, Sky can have Costas, whoever in the US can have Montgomorie - you can listen to his woe is me tales of US Opens and how he single handedly won the Ryder Cup in Wales and and  and

P.S. Can't wait to see Hossler at the 40 acres.

UT won the team NCAA this year. If Spieth maintains his amateur status and stays at Texas, we could be in for a nice run of team/individual championships similar to or surpassing the Kite/Crenshaw early 70s.

I think it's time they stop selling beer at golf tournaments.

Furyk must have drank his 5 hour energy before he went to the range and it wore off on the back 9 because he plays so damn slow.  4:20 for a twosome, they never got back into position after their warnings and should have been on the clock.  The last group argument doesn't fly with me, if you believe that then you must also feel that the team driving for a winning score at the end of a football game should get more time on the play clock then they had earlier in the game so they have time to call just the right play.

FWIW, NBC = Golf Channel. Both owned by Comcast. I don't like Costas, but no more than I dislike the monologues by Rick Reilly, Tom Rinaldi, or whomever.

We have had a whole thread about it. Most people said slow play is slow play and it sounded like most of them would have had no problem giving Jim a stroke penalty for his slow play on that whole.

I am sure it is just like Augusta (except people actually play Olympic as a home course). If you water the course and adjust the rough it turns into a tough course but one where you can get your ball to stick on the green. It also helps when you play at 6200 yards instead of 7000.

They set up the course specifically for the US Open. Grow the rough to ridiculous lengths, narrow the fairway, speed up the green's. Olympic when it's not hosting the US Open probably isn't nearly as difficult. I bet for the few weeks leading up to the open the members' indexes went up a bit though.

I read somewhere that the course was closed for about a month prior to the tournament as part of the preparation.

As a Texas Tech alumni, he can go jump off the golden gate bridge. Haha. Got high hopes for this kid, even if he did choose the wrong school.

After watching (almost) all of this tournament, I'd have to say it wasn't all that enjoyable to watch.  Perhaps that's because I was pulling for Tiger/G-Mac/Westwood.  Webb Simpson is a good player and perhaps a nice guy, but oh so dull.  Same with Furyk.

But on a more objective level I didn't find the course all that fun.  I understand it's supposed to be difficult.  I don't want to see 20-under.  Here were my issues as a casual golf fan:

-I want to see players hit their driver once in a while.  Course required way too many irons/hybrids off the tee.  Love the Tiger stinger but it gets a little old watching guys lay up to 220 on a Par-4, then hit their 2nd shot into a bunker.

-Way too many chips that were essentially hacking it out of weeds because the rough was so ridiculous.  That kind of rough puts way too much emphasis on luck when chipping.

-Related to the above, the rough on the fairways was so long that, again, too much luck was involved.  It all depended on how the ball happened to sit up (or not).  As Johnny Miller never got bored of pointing out.

Overall I think the course made luck too big a factor in general.  I saw players hit the same shot into a green on the same day - one would skip forward and roll off the back, another would stop well short of the hole.  It didn't seem to reward good shot-making because even the players didn't know where the ball would go once it hit.

Also it just seemed like TOO much bunker play.  Honestly I enjoy a well-done bunker shot but it seemed like every shot around the green was a blast from a bunker.  Probably because so many of the approach shots were from that ridiculous rough.

Finally, ESPN/NBC's coverage was awful.  Chris Berman doing golf is just a joke.  Johnny Miller knows his stuff but is not enjoyable to listen to at all.  Dour and grumpy.  I wonder if anyone has a count of how many times he used the phrase "breaks towards Lake Merced".  CBS does an immeasurably better job covering golf.

There would never have been an opportunity to assess a penalty as he was never on the clock.

Totally agree on Miller.  How many times does Johnny have to tell us the same thing?  We get it, Tiger doesn't adjust well to the course softening up.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
