Kinda looks like a 69?  That is a 69.  Erik is obviously right that it is made by a company who calls themselves 59belts, but sorry, that logo does not say 59 anymore than "77" says 11.

The commentators were giving their impersonation of the people booing the layup.  I doubt the booers knew much about Colsaerts, which is why they wanted him to just go for it.  If they knew he was a long hitter, then yes I'd agree they were booing for that reason.  Most likey, they were just booing for the sake of booing and not much thought went into it

Yeah, that's probably intentional.  That's only a "5" in the loosest of interpretations.

It looks even more like a 69 in the high res photos on their website.

Stuart Appleby even said it looks like 69 and he has a legitimate reason for wearing one.

Crap logo.

It looks like 59 in the same way that Bob Costas' hair looks like hair.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

If you ever get to Hawaii, on Oahu ... play Ko'olau Golf Course .. when it first opened, the slope rating was 162 ..

and no, that's not a joke ..

The local members complained, ended up playing other courses, tourists stopped going, etc .. so they took some of it's teeth out.

It now slopes out at 1 5 2 .. I LOVE super tight, fast, never a flat lie in the fairway, bent grass stimped @14's golf courses too!  ..

http://www.koolaugolfclub.com/golf.cfm without the ocean vista's (Ko'olau is a mountain/valley course)

and Kapalua is aLOT easier .. (slopes at 152 also) but it's a bit longer, not to mention, quite a-bit more wide open.

But yeah, I'd love to play Olympic also .. some of those uphill approaches would kill me though.

I don't play courses like that, so I don't get to practice those shots.

Of course the "5" is really  a 6. Unless an upside down 9 is a 5 now. It's even more juvenile than Ian J Poulter's logo, if that's possible.

Their slope rating was higher than the highest allowed value of 155? And this has what to do with the U.S. Open exactly?

Does anybody know what the course rating of a US Open course actually is?  I'm very curious because it seems to me the number would be astronomical.  Looks like the everyday rating for Olympic lake course is 76.5/145.

By comparison, the USGA rating for Torrey Pines is 78.1/143 under normal conditions.  The players can shoot in the 60's on that course in the Farmer's Insurance Open (which is already set up harder than it is for the public), but can't break par for the US Open on the same course.

Same thing for Pebble Beach ... the everyday rating there is 75.5/145.  It plays much easier in the AT&T; than in the US Open.

My random guess would be that a US Open course would always rate over 80.

Yes. It indeed did. There was major controversy over this, and the issue was resolved. OTH, I thought it was grrreat just the way it was.

And I was merly responding to a contributor's passion for playing a course as (or almost as) "difficult" as Olympic.. set up for a U.S. Open.

I didn't mean to be and I realize that I'm stil a noobie here. I'll keep it OT more in the future. Still gettin my Foot-Joy's wet around here.

Now then, back to our regular scheduled program.

My point was I think they made it up. No actual sanctioned course rating team would be able to give them a number that high. The numbers stop at 155.

Pine Valley's Slope is 155 from the tips, 153 from the Member tees. Most people agree it's the toughest course in the world.

Not sure if this is already common knowledge but a follow up story on the "bird man" who flew in during Simpsons interview:

http://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2012/06/crazy-jungle-bird-man-interrupts-us-open-trophy-presentation-web/

Apparently he was never jailed and his reason, or so he claims, was to raise awareness about deforestation.

Personally, I don't feel it warranted jail, it was funny, albeit not appropriate.

Well at least he accomplished his goal! I totally got that from his outfit, the British flag hat gave it away. Same with the, as Erik put it, "Ooooooo-wahhhhhhhhh, Oooooooh-waahhhhhhhhhhhh." I'm sure that all of the world's largest logging corporations are taking notice. They hate it when their golf trophy ceremonies are interrupted.

In 2006, I asked the USGA what the rating and slope for Winged Foot as a U.S. Open course would have been. Their answer was, the approximate ratings would be 78.6/150.

According to this article: http://www.popeofslope.com/courserating/toughest.html, it was an actual USGA handicap team that gave the 162 rating. Per the article, the course opened at 152 but was re-rated at 162 after Knuth (inventor of the handicap system) played it and said 152 was too low.

Maybe 155 wasn't always the max? Or maybe the article is urban legend.

Maybe. Who knows? I can't say I doubt it anymore, though. Good find.
