That is true.  If it was for next year, then Poppy Hills is out.  The renovation should last the whole year, although parts of the course will remain open (I just played it on Tuesday).

If we do a Kentuckty Regional, we should do Fox Hollow in Glasgow, KY.

That area still seems like a good one though for all of Cali.  Off the top of my head you got Blackhorse/Bayonet, Del Monte, Pacific Grove, Rancho Canada, Laguna Seca.

Oh, and that Pacific Ocean thingie.

I voted yes and have enough frequent flyer and hotel points from all my business travel to help with the cost.

I look forward to seeing what gets organized.

Cool.  Hmmm Quick question... I was just thinking what 'if' we did something like this next January during the PGA Merchandise show in Orlando?  Could users/attendees possibly get tickets to attend the merchandise show via The Sand Trap?  That may be a way to get more people to travel... So I was just throwing that out there as an idea.

No, they could not. Not legitimately.

I agree.  Mostly because there are some great courses that aren't completely out of the price range of the average golfer.

I think I'm playing Pacific Grove in a couple months.  My brother is getting married in August in Monterey, and my father, brother and I are going to play one of the courses in the area.  My father wants to play Pacific Grove.

I've only played Bayonet/Blackhorse in the Monterey area. Sadly, I haven't had the opportunity to play Poppy Hills even with NCGA membership. But I agree, there are still a fair amount of Monterey courses that are within a good price range.

Ah, but as a PGA Member it seems that a person associated with TST (let's hypothetically say his name is "Erik") could certainly get us in under the guest registration.   Per the PGA Merchandise Show website:

  • Can I bring my family to the PGA Merchandise Show?
  • Family members and guests can be registered by a badged attendee at the show for $50 a person. PGA Members may register up to four family members and guests in advance of the show at no charge. There is a $10 fee for each family member and guest over this allotment .

Note that there is no limit on how many people can be guests; just $10 per person - that would be totally worth it!

Good job on the research. James should be stationed in Orlando soon, so by next January, perhaps we can have an outing at Reunion or something.

We'll see. That's a ways off (but will come up sooner than you'd think).

Pacific Grove is a great value at about $70 for a weekend round. The front nine is nice but it goes away from the ocean, the back is where you get your Pacific Ocean views and your money's worth.

This is a cool idea; I'm always down for a golf trip if the cost isn't too outrageous.  As someone who has participated in a lot of these types of "forced group" events (meaning that the group isn't self-selected, but rather kind of thrown together), a few tips:

1. everyone's idea of "reasonable" cost isn't the same.

2. everyone's idea of fun itinerary isn't the same.

So, recommend that we put folks together in a location and have 1 big scheduled "outing" of golf.  In that outing, the cost should be mainstream:  not $150/round, but not a $20 muni either.  For the remainder of the event (whether it's 2 days, 4, or as long as two guys from the forum want to hang out together) the itinerary should be loose or unscheduled, so that the guys who want to play Harbour Town ($220/round) can get together, and the guys who want to find a $20 muni can get together.  Also, that includes the folks who want to come for a day trip AND the guys who would commit to a 3 or 4 day golf vacation.

I also like the idea of regional events.  Keeps the cost down and allows the day-trippers to participate.

This is very reasonable ... however, I wouldn't mind a trip where you don't have to travel to far if you know what I'm saying!

I`d be happy to participate in a Colorado regional event and maybe elsewhere if I could tie it in with some other planned travel.

With enough time to plan in advance, I'd go as far north as Myrtle Beach and as far south as Orlando/Tampa/Daytona.  As far as World Woods goes...great courses, would be perfect as far as the gold goes...but there facilities are not conducive to a large outing.  There are barely 20 seats in there Bar/Restaurant.  If that wasn't a problem for most though, staying at the Plantation Inn 20 miles up the road would be pretty cheap, and they have a nice pool area right on the water, good restaurant and tiki bar on the pool deck.  They do good deals through a certain web site when you book the golf together.  They even have an on site course, although not great, it's in decent shape just not overly challenging.  I played there with 3 friends over memorial day, played 5 rounds over 5 days/4 nights (4 at WW) and it was just over $300 a person with taxes and everything.

    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.

    • I have nothing to add other than I freaking love her swing and I think she's hot as hell and some of my golfing buddies disagree so I fought them
    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
