My Swing (mchepp)

Here is some video from my last range session. I start with 3/4 swings then swing about 60% then move to full speed. I am working on @mvmac suggestions of flattening the shaft between A4 and A5.

Some stills

This is a comparison of the 3/4 swing versus an older swing

The 60% swing (pretty close to the 3/4 swing)

The full swing versus the 3/4 swing (Not bad, getting very close)

Wow, this is pretty cool. I have a few questions that I hope you don't mind answering. 1) What software do you use to be able to watch the video in slow motion and be able to take still shots and draw lines? 2) Where can I get more information about the A1, A2, etc. positions? 3) What device do you use to record yourself? How many fps? Thanks!

1) I have a Casio that does 120 fps and 240 fps. For Windows 7 users and I thin Vista, any media player + Snipping Tool (Built in with windows). VLC media player has a capture screen shot. Quicktime might as well. Though I like quick time for clipping videos. Though you'll need to buy quick time to get the good features. I think 60 fps is the minimum required for adequate viewing of the golf swing. I think there are a few other free golf swing softwares out there as well.

Kinda written down the middle of the screenshots:

I really should consider not posting around my bedtime or in the morning when I wake up since by brain is functioning during those times.

This camera is the Casio FC-100. Mine has been beat to hell. Dropped a couple of times, blew over in the wind once on the tri-pod and therefore it malfunctions. So I am looking for an upgrade. I would like to get the FH-25 in the Casio line, but not sure if I want to spend that much on a camera that needs to be so rugged. I might slip back to the FH-20 in order to get a better price.

The FC-100 shoots at 210fps. The drawback is I cannot set manual exposure so in the full swings you can see that the head gets blurry. I would recommend not skimping as I did originally and getting one that has manual exposure.

As Erik mentioned analyzer is really good. You need a Mac but like a Mac it is easy to use and understand. I used to use V1 but it was confusing didn't work well on Mac at all. I am interested to see what 2.0 holds for us.

Wow, looks like the Casio FH-20 runs about $1,000. Def out of my price range.

The full swing versus the 3/4 swing (Not bad, getting very close)

It was the right thing at the time, but now please stop as you're "there" already and have possibly gone too far. Left arm shifting out slightly is fine, but the left picture is WAY better than the right picture above.

@david_wedzik and I filmed a video for you today and it should demonstrate a few things for you.

To others: note that this is particular to what @mchepp is doing right now, and what he needs to work on next. This is individualized information, not for mass consumption or "use" in your own swing, or your buddy's swing, etc.

Basically, the top left image is causing the other issues (the other three panels):

Why?

We know - from our own studies as well as what we've confirmed from various biomechanists, etc. - once a club is "going" in a certain direction at about A5, it's going to keep going in that direction. You're now laying the shaft down from 4 to 5, but at 5 it has to kick out or else you'd miss the golf ball.

Illustrated (somewhat):

You:

How others manage to "do it" - going from across the line and/or steep to laying the shaft down "through" A5.

You can't (or shouldn't want to) lay the shaft down more because you're already fine. You're on plane right now - to shallow it out further means to make yet another compensation (kicking the club HARD around the corner) in order to hit the golf ball.

Grant doesn't do it very much:

Consequently he looks normal in the finish:

Your hands pull in HARD because otherwise you're going to shank, miss the golf ball to the outside, etc. You can't "long arc" it from there. You'd have to somehow quickly send your hands out when you're already in the process of "burying the handle."

Here's the video:

You can like this just fine, and if you want to swing like this, that's okay too, but you're going to have to be content to hit your 7-iron 145 yards or so, and your finish will continue to look bad unless you add in some other compensation (tipping your head back to help keep the path OUTward as long as possible, etc.).

What I'd do from here? It's in the video, but basically, get to 4, and then rip down as you go forward and long arc it and hit your finish. Stop worrying about 3 to 4 to 5. Your left arm is fine, the shaft is fine, just start ripping the ball, feeling good extension on the finish. It'll get rid of the pulls, cuts, and the "cramped" look you've got at A7 through 9. JUMP like a motherbleeper. EXTEND. SPEED.

TL;DR version: You're now too shallow at A5, so the clubhead (sweetspot) has to kick out HARD, which leads to the cramped look at A7-A9. Move on to focusing on speed and extension.

Still working on the extension pieces. Developed a wicked pull hook so it makes golf a little tough but it helps me to stay on the range a bit more to work on the extension piece. Occasionally I will hit a beautiful high shot that makes all the work worth it.

Those swings look much improved Mike.

So most shots are pull hooking, irons and driver?

On the swings that you feel like you did a good job of thrusting/extending, do they still pull hook?

Very often!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Almost 2-3 a practice session. Sometimes right in the head. Once I get one I will post it of me trying to get out of the way. Watching myself in slow motion trying to get the hell out of the way give me a new respect for hockey goalies.

    • Here's the bet. Assuming the pursuit of a Tour card holds, who wins their first Tour event? Charlie, or this Russell kid? Bet is off if Miles Russell signs with LIV.
    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
