I think Davis Love III is schedule to announce his 4 Captain`s picks this week.  Who would you pick and why?

Here are the 8 who earned enought points over the past 2 years to earn a spot on the team.

1 1 Tiger Woods 17 6,014.184
2 2 Bubba Watson 19 5,815.054
3 3 Jason Dufner 21 5,697.302
4 4 Keegan Bradley 22 5,551.206
5 5 Webb Simpson 20 4,635.500
6 6 Zach Johnson 24 4,491.544
7 7 Matt Kuchar 22 4,448.942
8 8 Phil Mickelson 22 4,233.108

I'll answer after they finish today......

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li
3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li
Hybrids: Titleist 910H 19* and 21* Diamana Kai'li
Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Fowler, DJ, Mahan, Watney. The only thing I'd consider changing would be Stricker instead of Watney.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

I`m looking at 5 guys and will vote after today`s round.

I`d much rather look at a 4-8 week period in determining a "hot" player with an emphasize on the most recent results.  I would tend to pick a player who is consistently very good rather than a guy who wins one week and misses the cut the next.  I think this is one reason why a guy like Luke Donald has a very good match play record.

With 1 top 10, 4 top 25s and 1 missed cut in his last 6 events, I would like to see Watney back up his win with at least a top 25 before I would move him from the very warm to hot category.  He had a good round yesterday and with a good round today would be on my team.  Stricker is on my team.  The other 3 I am considering are DJ, Bo Van Pelt and Brandt Snedeker.  Unless DJ melts down today he will make it.

Last 6 Events for each Player

Stricker- 3 top 10s, 5 top 25s and no missed cuts

Watney- 1 Win/Top 10, 4 Top 25s, 1 missed cut

Bo Van Pelt- 3 Top 10s, 5 Top 25s, 1 missed cut

Dustin Johnson- 2 Top 10s, 3 Top 25s, no missed cuts

Robert Garrigus- 2 Top 4/10s, 4 Top 25s, 1 missed cut

Snedeker- 2 Top 3/10/25s, 1 missed cut

Fowler- 1 Top 25, 1 missed cut

Furyk- 1 Top 2/10/25, 3 missed cuts

With a mediocre Ryder Cup record and 3 missed cuts after the US Open and failing to close the deal at Firestone, Furyk is out.

I would have liked to take Fowler because of his success at the last Ryder Cup and win earlier this season, but with the chance to shoot his 3rd 80 in recent weeks and no strong recent performances, he is out.

Bo Van Pelt played decently in the final group when Tiger won the AT&T; and going back to his t7 at the Players has been consistently in the top 25 (8 top 25s and 4 top 10s in 11 events)

Tough call, but I went with DJ, Stricker, Snedeker and Watney

DJ and Snedeker played their way onto this team with strong finishes in the last two weeks. Stricker is a solid choice. The last captain's pick could be anyone, but I'd lobby for Hunter Mahan out of a crowded field.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Driver: '07 Burner 9.5° (stiff graphite shaft)
Woods: SasQuatch 17° 4-Wood (stiff graphite shaft)
Hybrid: 4DX Ironwood 20° (stiff graphite shaft)Irons/Wedges: Apex Edge 3-PW, GW, SW (stiff shaft); Carnoustie 60° LWPutter: Rossa AGSI+ Corzina...

Johnson, Snedeker, Stricker, Mahan.

Johnson and Snedeker are playing great right now. Mahan has won the Match Play earlier this year and finished well yesterday. Stricker because of Woods, putting and experience.

My picks too. Love Furyk, but he's been unable to close the deal lately....

3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li

I can't believe the press this is getting...it's over the top but kinda fun.  I feel for Mahan but I think he lost his spot 2 years ago when he chunked a chip, and last year when he missed his par putt for the fedex cup.

In my bag

Driver:      SLDR 10.5*

Hybrids:   Taylormade RBZ Stage 2

Irons:       NikeVR PRO 4-PW

Wedges:   Nike VR Pro 50* 54* 58*

Putter:      2014 Newport 2

Ball:          E6

Can't really argue with any of those picks.  Furyk is the only one whose recent performances didn't really earn him a spot, but he's been such a staple on US teams for so long, and he's a fierce competitor.  DL3 has seen Furyk deliver in Ryder and President's cup teams many times, so he went with the experience there.

I hate to see Hunter Mahan left out, but bottom line is he hasn't played very well the second half of this season.

I know a lot of guys wanted to see Watney, and he made a strong statement the last two weeks, but he was just too far back in the points.  You have to jump over a lot of guys to get to 30th.

I like the picks. Dont think you can really go any other way except maybe Rickie for Furyk. Now it will be interesting to see the matchups. Medinah is a HUGE course so I think it will be crucial to pair the clear long hitters with the best putters. Maybe something like this:

Tiger-Stricker - history

Phil-Keegan - long hitter and great overall talent with what I believe will be the Poulter of the US team for the future in Keegan

Furyk-DJ - long hitter and accurate iron play/great putter

Bubba-Webb - long hitter and great overall talent

Snedeker-Kuchar - great level headed pairing with plenty of accuracy and a great putter

Zach Johnson-Dufner - best putter on the team with another very well rounded and level headed player

This team is damn good. You have 4 long ass hitters and 4 remarkable putters. Then you have 4 very well rounded players. I like these pairings and my God is this team better on paper, but hopefully it translates to Medinah.

:tmade: R1 Driver

:tmade: Rocketballz 19 Rescue

:mizuno: MP-59 4-PW Irons
:cleveland: CG16 52, 56

Good picks. If Furyk doesn't come through, that choice will haunt DL3 forever, but I still won't call it a bad choice. Gonna be a fun Ryder Cup!

Enough of the old farts. Get some of the younger guys involved NOW. The old guys have proven they're good at losing.

Not too many people I'd rather have standing over a putt than Stricker though..... I'd have been TERRIBLY surprised/disappointed if he hadn't grabbed DJ for his length at Medinah.....

I might have considered Bo VanPelt instead of Furyk, but I guess Love III got it right.

Watched a few minutes of D. Love 3rd on TV giving us low mortals the Captain's Selections.  Must wonder however, if he thought that the golden Crucifix he wore on his blue suit is some kind of talisman to ward off the equally imposing Crescent Moon that hangs over Medinah's Clubhouse. Oh, well,  can't go wrong when we shout-out : "****d".

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
