Forgive the separate thread, but after 45 years of playing, and probably somewhere north of 2,000 rounds.....most of the last 20 years off a mid single-digit handicap, I shot my first round of 72, even par, today. 6,580, 71.6/124. 4 bogies and 4 birdies, including 18. Kicked the CRAP out of my 4 hcp buddy and his 75. Fun stuff. :-)

That`s great...with the monkey off your back, hopefully you will make it a repeat performance.  Did you ever think about playing the up tees or easier courses to get more comfortable going low?

Not really. I've played up tees on occasion just to change things up, but as a rule I play a course at a length that I feel matches my ability and length. Usually somewhere in the 6300-6600 yd range. I'm not all that long, but I don't really enjoy playing driver/wedge all day, even if it results in some lower scores. I also tend to play with younger flat bellies who aren't all that willing to give this old guy any advantage. The rat bastards.....!

I understand what you are saying and that is about the length course I feel comfortable on.  However, I find some holes/courses do a good job of making you use all your clubs even from the shorter tees (while others don`t).  As an example, at Keystone Ranch, the 9th hole is 300 from the whites and 360 from the blues but plays shorter from both if you take it over the water.  So from the whites, it is normally a challenging 3 wood at the green while it is just a lay up/wedge for me from the blues.

The first time I played 18 at the 6,000 white tees at Keystone River, I think I used ever club in my bag between lay ups and going for the green on the par 5s.  I guess what I am saying is that the right course can be easier but still a lot of fun from shorter tees.

Heard of it, haven't played it. Have to now, to see how easy it is.

Just kidding, great round!

Lol. Good course. Always in great condition. Consistently among the best greens in central FL, bar none.

You just gave me something to shoot for!  I started playing 48 years ago at age 8 and had a ten year layoff so you have more cumulative years than I do.  I had a 72 once but it was on a par 68 with no par 5s.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
