Just want to see who everyone says.

I've golfed with a minor league baseball player and one of the best college players today.

Patrick Rogers. I golfed with him for my sectionals in high school golf. He is amazing. It was a treat. Like a VIP pass for a pro event. But who have you golfed with?

In my bag:

Taylormade R11S Driver
Taylormade RBZ 3-wood
Nike VRS Irons 4-9

Nobody "famous" - aside from that, I'm not the type of person to be star struck or go out of my way to interfere with a "celebrity", or even ask for an autograph.

That aside, a buddy of mine used to be the Offensive Coordinator for the Cleveland Crush (LFL - Lingerie Football League) and we golfed with Kenny Roda from ESPN 850 Cleveland.

Tommy Bolt @ Tarpon Woods GC in FL- I caught up to his 3-some after being abandoned by some 'Pro from Dover' who had all the excuses but no game and walked off after 3 holes. Mr. Bolt was as nice as his reputation was bad. One of the most enjoyable rounds (14 holes, anyway) ever. Filled out a foursome with Gene Michael, Stump Merrill and Billy Connors at Lansbrook GC in FL. A real treat for a dyed in the wool Yankee fan. Another fun round with very little pomposity and a lot of Gin.

I haven't played with anybody "Super Famous" but the best I got is a current golf buddy and a member at my home course, Peter Barton. He was an actor back in the 80's doing mostly Soaps and TV like Young and the Restless, Love Boat,,,,,,,,. He's in his 50's now but back in the day made a couple teen slasher movies and was in Friday the 13th part 4.

But more important is that Peter is a class act and I really enjoy playing golf with him. He takes the game serious but is still a fun guy to hang out with.

A short and eclectic group:

  • Tiger when he was 16 years old
  • Alice Cooper for two holes in Scottsdale (he was playing through); very cool guy
  • Marcus Allen (football RB)
  • Actors Peter Bonerz (played the dentist on the original Newhart show) and Joe Regalbuto (best know for Murphy Brown)
  • Jimmy Fox (former LA Kings hockey player and currently their TV color commentator)

I've seen a few other celebs on courses while playing, including OJ Simpson shortly after his trial, apparently out searching for the real killer at Griffith Park in LA.

Brad Pitt's brother, Doug.

Well, he wasn't famous at the time so it doesn't really count.

Went to school with Brad and Doug.

Played with Doug when I was trying out for the high school golf team.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
